I think we made it pretty clear that the beta was rough as fuck. :)
Oh I know, I was in it. But all we ever heard was that this should all be ironed out at launch. And then I got all confused when they had us testing the alphas and not any actual beta. I was expecting an actual beta to help smooth over the final product as well.
as previously pointed out the 88% is obtained by doing
(1+50%*(1+25%)-1=87.5%
The bug seems to be in applying the bonuses twice (i.e square) to arrive at the final number
As to the question of “who multiplies instead of adding up”, Eve does that as well
Other possibility would be to do 5*(1+0.5+0.25). Depends on which method you are used to I guess. Albeit when multiplying, some stacking penalties tend to be introduced.
Not that I terribly care, Impulse does not play nice with Wine sadly (would have bought it otherwise)
Oh wow, that’s a rough review up on Fidgit. Can we please have another one in 9 months when the bugs are sorted so I remember to buy it then?
Also, I think Stardock should start setting up their multiplayer servers more than ZERO DAYS in advance.
That too, forgot to comment on it
Sounds pretty silly to leave setting up the servers to the last minute ? … especially when you have already been stung by this problem once already

Multiplying bonuses is actually pretty common. The Galcivs work that way as do many other games (Even games like WoW and LoL in many cases). That’s why lots of small bonuses are surprisingly strong.
I think that article is pretty abysmal. He says how great the map looks and that there seemingly is something wrong with the math (except that he is the one getting it wrong).
How does the damn thing play though?
Seriously? I did not know that, I did heavy endgame raiding into BWL etc before the first expansion came out and I never knew bonus’s were multiplicative. My gear choices make a little more sense now…
Also makes Stardocks choice alot more reasonable, I thought they were the odd duck out.
Have you actually read the article?
And regarding education bonuses, he says there’s an unexplained 50% bonus instead of the expected 10% that’s not accounted for by multiplying instead of adding.

I may have exxagerated a bit my my main point still stands. He writes about (granted, more that two) things that annoy him, but doesnt actually mention even a tiny impression of the actual gameplay.
Patience. It’s just the first in a series of game diaries. This one was about bad math and the unready state of the game. Perhaps the next one is about how much he loves one of the factions, who knows?
No, your main point falls as well.
If you can’t discern “frustration” (at inconsistencies in the math and just the whys and wherefores of the game’s feedback) as being Tom’s impression of the game, then you’re reading through Stardock-colored glasses, Therlun. I mean, what other “tiny impressions” are you looking for? “Clicking on a unit is how you access it”?

Heh, I guess its not worth the bother but if you read my posts in this very thread you would notice that I am critical of the game myself. I am highly frustrated by several design decisions (in beta 3 and 4) as I was with many aspects of Galciv 2. My overall impression of the beta I played was “has some promise, needs much more work” if I recall.
So it would be nice to not accuse me of wearing coloured glasses of any kind.
My problem with that article is not that it voices a negative opinion about the game, but that it focuses on highly inane topics. A soon to be released somewhat anticipated game and the only things mentioned is how it reacts to alt tab and how the math supposedly doesn’t add up?
Is it any fun? Is it engaging? What puts you off gameplaywise and what’s interesting gameplaywise. Thats the stuff I would want to know about when reading a first impression/diary of a game coming out next week.
Fun and engaging, huh? That’s what you want to know? I’m sure you can find that out from any number of writers, but meaningless metrics like those aren’t my bag.
What puts me off gameplaywise is that the numbers don’t add up, and that it needs a lot of work, and that I’m frustrated by several things, and that important information is presented poorly. I have a pervasive sense that I can’t trust the game yet. All stuff I’ve said in the “abysmal” article instead of jumping to meaningless conclusions about whether it’s “fun”.
I got news for you: it’s out today.

“It was my understanding there would be no math.”
Well, I suffered through bugs and shite with plenty of My Most Highly Anticipated PC games–that popped out of the oven before being fully cooked (Soldiers at War comes to mind)–and yet had quite a bit of fun, nonetheless. Sadly, SaW was never properly patched but I’m certain Elemental will be improved for years to come.

If all true by the time the day0 patch rolls out and the game is officially released, I think it may show a weakness in the way that Stardock does betas. I do think there is a lot of good things to be said by how they ran it. Have very early mechanics-focused betas was good early on, but I think having a window of 2-4 weeks for the “finished” product just to fine-tune gameplay of the whole package would be beneficial.
But again, I’ll resolve judgement until Tuesday.
Man, I’m on the fence for cancelling my pre-order of the Limited edition after reading the last few pages of this thread.
I made up implied nouns?
I think when the idea clicks for you, you should buy me a five-dollar footlong for educating you.
Also, re: the game-- LOL. Congrats to the beta testers-- Stardock’s refund policy only applies to card transactions less than 90 days old.

So the state of Elemental at release isn’t too good, huh? I’m so surprised I think I might die.
Well, cancelled the pre-order. Not paying $70 for what sounds like an unpolished product that was rushed out.
