You seem very good at figuring out my motives for being here. If I divine correctly, I’m here somehow in relation to Elemental only. And I only write spam so that I can get up to 50 posts.

Not really – though I divine well enough that you don’t really care, you’re just getting your jollies, I’ll go on full disclosure. Here it is, the big reveal:

I’m a strategy game nerd. I love them. I learned about Elemental from a blogger, which pointed to a Quarter to Three thread – this one! I also talk a lot, or rather, type a lot, on the internets so it wasn’t out of character for me to post here.

I like Elemental. That doesn’t mean I don’t see that it has plenty of flaws: It’s goofy in its artwork, except for the cloth map. I wish it had elves, dwarves, and other staples of fantasy and don’t really know why they chose not to include them. The AI is wonky and really not very good even at top difficulty because the Sovs continue to wander around underprotected. The game seems to borrow a lot of concepts from FfH (and that probably borrows from some other game I don’t know about) but doesn’t do any of it half as good as FfH does.

But I think plenty of other folk have already covered these aspects pretty well, and the designer has heard them. My contribution to this thread is mainly in pointing out what seems pretty obvious but which has gotten nearly drowned out by the squawk of bulletin-board high dudgeon: there’s still a game here, such as it is, and they are still working on it. Many people agreed that GalCiv2 was pretty good, especially in terms of AI after it was finally completed. I think it’s worth my own time to wait for the final result before I throw in the towel. I expressed that opinion in this thread, which calls itself the “Elemental all purpose thread.” Yet, in doing so, somehow I have become, by virtue of my positive attitude, and recent sign-up date, someone whom long standing members feel should be slagged in drive by crap bombs and asked to leave. Nice!

It’s not post-count snobbery, it’s recognition of post-count padding to get to 50 so that they can start new threads and post links etc.

“I am right because I have 2000 posts to your 1855 posts” sucks, I agree. That wasn’t the point of UncleSmoothie’s post. The recent influx of people brought by this disaster of a thread are in many cases making short posts in order to reach the magic 50-post mark so they can start threads. dbd1963 his/herself noted that he/she was trying to reach the 20-post mark because they wanted to start creating threads. Now, in dbd1963’s case it might not be such a bad thing; there are others on whose account I weep for the passing of unmoderated registration.

Eh, Elemental is a disappointment but given Brad’s response to things, I am willing to wait before passing judgment on the game and certainly before passing judgment on his character. Elemental does need a lot of work before it would be what I would call good, but at a base, it has potential and Brad has recognized that it does need work and has promised that the work will be done. This so far is Stardock’s first bomb and it is far from their first game. I have thoroughly enjoyed Galciv 1 and 2, Sins, and Demigod so I know they know how to make a good game. Now I am just going to sit back and let them.

I am disappointed that they released it in the condition it was in, though I understand the motive in wanting to beat Civ 5 to market by a month. I think ultimately that will cost them more than it gained them, but I can understand the pressure there.

I hope that I don’t end up mentioning this game in the same breath as the likes of MOO 3 or Tribes 2, but the big difference so far is that it is a developer that has done good work before and has promised to make it right. Now I wait.

Mine too! Except I was reading on my phone. The girlfriend kept asking what I was doing, and after she stopped buying the “texting” excuse, I just had to tell her it was something she wouldn’t understand.

Tribes 2 turned out to be a pretty good game after all the patches. There was a recent (free) fan re-release called Tribes Next (I’d link it if I could) that’s worth checking out if you liked the promise of Tribes 2 but didn’t stick around long enough to see it realized.

Eh, I couldn’t really put my finger on what I didn’t like about Tribes 2. It didn’t feel right. Tribes Vengeance, while still not quite the same flow as the original Tribes, was much closer so I just played the hell out of that for a while.

He fucked up. He lied. He rageposted. He apologized, but on the platform of a press release. People lost their jobs at Stardock because of the massive failures he, as CEO, allowed to occur in Elemental’s launch. He has stated that more jobs will be lost because of what he’s done. I sincerely hope he at least has the ounce of integrity to give himself a pay cut over this instead of shoveling people out of the studio.

And they lost their jobs in Michigan. Good luck finding another game dev job in that fucking state.
