I could have sworn that it’s been spelled out in the past that you just needed to associate your copy of Elemental with your Impulse account. Whether that was by registration or downloading something, that’s all they needed. The “update” bit is in reference to retail copies that people may have simply installed and never looked into patching them.

For those worried about not getting their free xps, as long as you got some proof, anywhere-you’re good. A store receipt will work also (will require Support)

There were a lot of people who said they hadn’t even installed it based on the early bad buzz and that they were going to wait. Considering that so far we’ve only seen one major patch (IIRC), I can see those people having no idea that Stardock is creating qualifiers for the free stuff.

Back when I lived in Michigan I looked into these guys (Stardock) since they were the only half-real game developer around the state. What’s amazing is that I’ve NEVER been impressed with Stardock games, and I’ve always thought that the CEOs marketing tactics of slandering big developers like Microsoft and EA (that their games and NDA are evil and need to change) were ridiculous claims that were obvious fake-faces to a similar marketing plan as the rest of the rival companies.
Then after all the fuss of pushing the “gamer’s bill of rights”, he lets a product like this and Demi-God come out. He forgot to add “The gamer has the right to not have shitty and broken games delivered to them”… oh wait, it WAS in there on #2! He didn’t even follow his OWN philosophy of making sure that “games just work”.
Stardock has not only been wasting money developing MULTIPLE broken products, but even throws it away on bad ideas like Demi-God and Elemental. They got a few lucky pitches with some space strategy games, thought they were geniuses for making money from it, and now are laying people off because they REALLY don’t have what it takes to be in the industry.
Galactic civilizations didn’t even deserve the high scores it got. It was littered with bugs that made it close to unplayable without a patch. I’m just glad to see that Brad Wardell and his company are finally being seen for the lying money-grubbers they are, absolutely no different from the larger publishers they try to slander to make sales.
Oh wait, there is a difference, those other companies make more fun and reliable games.
In case anyone wants to read back on Wardell’s gloating and laugh at what his company has become after trying to be the “Saviour of the PC Gamer”, here is an interview:

Well, I guess the post did have the word “Elemental” in it at least once…

We had this discussion for, like, 150 pages. We’ve moved on. You should too.
Worst first post ever. REPORTED
And he’ll be leaving soon…
Brad got Elemental to kill my dog!
Now with that out of the way… I hope Stardock fix the game. I was hoping for a worthy “sequel” to MoM, maybe by this time next year we’ll have it.

It’s nothing concrete, but I like some of the things Kael has to say:
Emphasis mine.
Why? I’m one of those people. I read all about the game here, and it was clear it would be much better in the future. So I set it on the shelf to wait. And yeah, I’ll get screwed for it, apparently.

So you never installed the game, or kept the receipt?

And how has that changed? They’re still working on the game, you’ll be getting a 1.1 update and an allegedly full-sized expansion pack for free. You can determine at that point whether or not expansion #2 is worth the cost or not.
Really, I’m not going to argue that Elemental wasn’t shit, but it’s not like a shit game is somehow unique to this industry. Mostly you just write it off, because if a game is shit you’re just out of luck and you move on.
I don’t see how you’re “screwed” by Stardock giving you a free expansion to try to make amends for their clusterfuck.

To me, the fact that Stardock/Brad were behind the ‘Gamer’s Bill of Rights’ makes everything bad about Elemental feel a lot worse than if it were just a regular ‘bad’ game. And honestly, these days, I dont buy a lot of bad games. I have a lot less time to game than when I was younger and I take less chances. I bought this game because it was billed as the spiritual successor to MOM. And it let me down.
I do think that it will eventually be a great game but I dont think it will be anytime soon and when it does I dont know that I will care. So, personally, I am not too happy about having dropped $50 a couple months ago for a game that I might never play again.

Yeah, that’s kind of where I’m at, olaf. I might go back to it in six months to see what’s changed, but right now it’s a soulless game. It’s less broken, it’s just not much fun…
Actually, I probably do have the receipt, but no, I never installed it. I’m waiting until it’s been improved. Why would I waste time on a game that is known to be unfinished?
And Kevin, maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the second expansion was now being offered for free to those who bought the game at release?
Someone took the Gamer’s Bill of Rights seriously? As in, something more than a differentiator from big “Evil” companies?

Robert, your understanding is correct, a second expansion is offered for free to those who purchased prior to Oct 31. I guess its a glass half full kind of situation, I see it as a good thing everyone is getting a free expansion that (hopefully) fixes the original game. I understand the situation you’re in and I hope you can find a receipt, I just didnt agree with the “getting screwed” statement.
Hopefully you’re able to get the second one for free. Best of luck with that!

At the time? No. I mean shit I think I saw a link here about it, clicked it and read it and thought ‘yeah right, that’ll be the day’. Its not like I started buying all things Stardock because of it. I think Galciv 2 and Elemental are the only games I have ever bought from them. I think I re-bought something I lost the media to when Impulse was called something else. Disciples 2 maybe.
But looking at it now, the ‘bill of rights’, and then realizing the state of Elemental as a I purchased it? What an ass fuck. And not by a random company. Brad posts here.
