Yeah, that video looks much better than the current tactical battles. That’s the kind of stuff I expected to have originally. It’s good to see them working on that.

Elemental will be continued working on, as Fallen is another team that does it. This is to ensure that the core product will be what it was meant to be.

No, just saw this thread resurrected a bit and saw the news about the former expansion being turned into its own product. And, in case you missed it, I did hedge my comments a bit with the “if this is the case” language. Hardly outrage considering the heaps of rhetorical bullshit Wardell spewed last year before and after Elemental’s release, but if you want to be all huggy-bear toward an established liar go right ahead. We are, after all, talking about a person who knowingly sold an unfinished, broken product to thousands of people and took in probably millions by doing so. We have harsh language for that sort of conduct from where I grew up. Not to mention subsequently refusing to honor his own publicly stated policy of refunding unhappy customers for many of those who bought the game, a policy that was crafted and released to garner positive mindshare for his company as gamer friendly. This turned out to be yet another Wardell lie.

That said, yeah, Fallen Princess looks interesting and I do hope Stardock turns Elemental into a passably working product. But until I hear that this event has occurred from a reliable source. . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6csp2fZt2E

I am much happier that they’re not trying to just band-aid the original into a passable game. I don’t think there’s much there to salvage, so the news that there’s a standalone expansion / sequel being designed by the team that’s now in place is very promising. Even that short video was more exciting than anything I experienced in the original.

It has been confirmed multiple times that if you’ve bought Elemental before 2011, you get FE for free.

Actually, for those who bought it by Oct 31, 2010, you get the first 2 expansions free.

I knew that, but afterwards they announced FE as an expandalone, almost as a new game, so i wasn’t sure it entered inside the 2 entitled expansions to recieve.

I would assume FE will be the first expansion seeing as there has been no other talk of expansion to the game. I believe FE will be a stand alone from a marketing position though, so they can readily get Elemental as a game re-reviewed and try and scrape back some dignity (and goodwill by not making gamers pay for the half arsed base game War of Magic).

It’s still ridiculously easy to kill enemy sovereigns. They wander out of their territory just as much as before.

Magic is much better, though.

I’m not sure this is a joke but Brad Wardell has clearly stated in his PDF report that they decided to give up on Elemental and make Fallen Enchantress a new stand-alone game. This has already been mentioned several times upthread.

They’re calling FE (and what ever follows) stand-alone expansions; they’re still free for those who are eligible.

They are indeed calling FE a “stand-alone expansion” but see this passage in the Stardock Customer Report:

Brad Wardell:

While War of Magic has subsequently been greatly improved, Stardock is not convinced that this title, with a 55 metacritic average, can redeem itself. Therefore, rather than tie new Designer/Project Manager Derek Paxton to the previously planned expansions of War of Magic, it was decided to have Derek and his team focus on the creation of Elemental: Fallen Enchantress, a stand alone expansion which will not require users to purchase War of Magic.

(Users who purchased War of Magic this past year will receive Fallen Enchantress for free; Stardock will also provide steep discounts to anyone who purchases War of Magic prior to the release of Fallen Enchantress. We are also committed to enhancing War of Magic on its own path for those users who prefer its game mechanics.)

As a practical matter, Fallen Enchantress is a new game, one that shares some art assets with War of Magic but little else. The scope of the differences between the two will become very apparent in the early months of 2011. Extensive brainstorming sessions between Derek Paxton (Fall from Heaven), Brad Wardell (Galactic Civilizations), and Jon Shafer (Civilization V) resulted in a complete redesign; combat systems, tactical combat systems, character creation, economic system, game mechanics, etc. are all new.

So it’s definitely going to be a relaunch, and there won’t be any other (or any real) expansions to Elemental.

I understand their thinking and I can’t complain given that I get it for free, but their intentions pretty much mean I have no incentive to bother with War of Magic anymore. If they are only marginally going to improve it, then I might as well uninstall the thing and see what Fallen Enchantress turns out to be.
