My EDTracker is ready!! My EDTracker is ready!! I am so excited, I just hope it arrives quickly from jolly old’ England.

That’s the one. Thanks.

Killing pirates simply means finding someone who’s wanted, has a bounty and generally has a pirate-sounding name or has their ship emblazoned with skull and crossbone symbols (a bit of a giveaway that!). When you target them, you’ll be told whether they’re Harmless, Elite, or anything in between, and that determines how tough they are, so if you want to play it safe only target Harmless and Mostly Harmless, perhaps up to Competent. The other factor is the ship. Sidewinders and Eagles are fairly easy to take on, Cobras less so until you get a better ship, Adders can be pirates occasionally and aren’t too bad. It’s even easier if the ship is already involved in a scuffle with another, because they will split their retaliation amongst their aggressors generally.

I can’t seem to talk to anyone in the game unless they’re in the same system and the same “space”.

Oh yes, everyone in an Anarchy system is “Clean” regardless of how bad they are. It can be harder to tell who’s a pirate and who isn’t, but generally killing anything with a bounty is a good idea.

The “Clean” in anarchy systems conundrum is solved by using a Kill Warrant Scanner. You use it, then look over at your left “Contacts” panel to see any bounties the target may have on him/her in another system.

Is it safe to buy and sell stuff yet? I just got home, if it’s not safe yet, I’ll just do some bounty hunting. And maybe look up where the hell Gilgamesh is so that I can make my way over to where Krok and Kadath are.

EDIT: Things seem to have fixed themselves. The parts I bought twice are now mine. No idea if the money I lost is back or not, I wasn’t paying enough attention.

No worries though, even if I did lose the money. Shrug. It’s fun earning it back. That’s the whole point of this game.

EDIT2: Oh yes, and for the first time, instead of open game, I’m playing in Veloxi group. No idea why. I’d have thought all of Veloxi would be playing in Open play, but I’m still not clear on why we’re doing what we’re doing.

Not sure, haven’t seen any kind of announcement. I’m gonna stick with bounty hunting for the time being.

I just got destroyed by a Mostly Harmless Wanted man called Drizzle. How embarrassing. Apparently a Federal Dropship just takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I pounded him for a good 4 or 5 minutes, but he just took it, with his shields down the whole time. And when he got shots on me, they were pretty devastating.

Mostly harmless or not, watch out for Federal Dropships. Ouch. $10k credits insurance hit.

I’m going back in for seconds. Where are you Drizzle?

He’s probably a friend of Julie Steiner.

Are you using the sub-system targeting?

Helps a lot with the bigger ships.

I have never used it. What sub-systems should I target on the bigger ships? The Federal dropship was the first big ship I fought, over an extended period too. I would have had plenty of time for subsystem targeting if I’d thought of it. Since I don’t have Gimballed weapons or turrets, does that mean I have to target the sub-systems myself? Or do they do a little bit of auto-aiming assist to help you out once you have the subsystem targeted?

I just fought a pair of Outlaws. A Competent pilot in an Aras (sp?) and an Expert pilot in an Eagle. I thought the first pilot would be harder to kill, but he was pretty simple to take out compared to the Eagle. The Eagle was running circles around me the whole time. If a Federation ship hadn’t been fighting him at the same time throughout the fight, I wouldn’t have won this one.

Now, I’m thinking maybe I should buy an eagle and give it a try. They’re so fast and agile!

From what I’ve seen watching streams, targeting the power plant is the way to go with the dropships and Anacondas and such.

Where do I start?

I took the leap and amassed a ton of links to user guides, tutorials, videos, guides to keybinding, etc. etc. It’s almost too much information, and I’m starting to suffer analysis paralysis.

Should I just forget about all that stuff right now and start with the basic tutorial?

Yes, do the basic tutorial, then docking tutorial, then revist your control mapping to make sure you are reasonably happy, then just jump into the world and do some delivery missions and trading. You’ll get your feet wet on the basics quickly then can look at the guides when something specific takes your fancy.

What sharaleo said.

Get the hang of docking and landing in the tutorials so you don’t incur penalties (like destruction of your ship for loitering). Get the hang of supercruise and hyperspace jumping while doing easy Fedex missions in-game. Try the combat tutorials. Then decide if you want to spend your early days mining, trading, or – if you’re good at combat – going for bounties.

If you do watch any of the videos, focus on ones that are fairly recent, say September or later, so they’re based on builds close to release state.

Damaging the drives can cause the ship to spin out of control. The power plant will detonate taking the ship out regardless of its remaining hull integrity. It should also reduce the opponents ability to do anything that requires power, but I don’t know that for certain.

I am not sure on the aiming assist with non-gimballed weapons.

I finally made the pilgrimage to Sol, and when I put in to dock at Mars High, I nearly got myself ignominiously killed because I couldn’t find my landing pad–the interior was different and the holographic numbers were pink (and a lot less visible)! I did approve of the palm trees, though.

I took a mission to go find some “well trained slaves”, which I assume are the legal Imperial Slaves. Are they only available in systems controlled by the Empire? How do I find out where they are available to purchase? The Galaxy Map is failing me.

I will say that traveling long distances is a joy in the Hauler compared to the Sidewinder. That fuel gauge is barely moving.

Info from the Pilot’s Guide:

When you target a subsystem, a reticle appears to help show you where the system is, but most subsystems can only be hit from a certain side of a ship. For example, you cannot shoot the cargo scoop when you are above a sidewinder, you must be below it.

[ol]
[li] Power Plant - destroys the ship. Usually behind the cockpit.[/li][li] Power Distribution - weapons, engines, & systems power allocations will act as if each assigned zero pips. Usually top or bottom, to one side.[/li][li] Cargo Scoop - scoop no longer functions, and cargo can leak out of the hold. Usually on the bottom.[/li][li] Life Support - cabin loses oxygen, 10 minutes to get it repaired before suffocation. Usually around the cockpit or sides.[/li][li] Shield Generator - shields will no longer recharge. Usually mirrors the Power Distribution placement.[/li][li] Drives - maximum speed reduces to 10%, severely impacting manoeuvrability. Usually two at the back, on either side - destroy one and they both go.[/li][li] Frameshift Drive - can no longer supercruise. Reports of the ship being destroyed as well, but may be a bug. Usually back centre.[/li][li] Weapon/Utility Mounts - disables equipment on those mounts. Placement varies.[/li][li] Windshield - HUD disappears, oxygen runs out as per Life Support.[/li][/ol]

When you have a subsystem targeted you should see a subtle hit marker on the target vessel. Lock on weapons (gimballed and turreted) will attempt to hit this marker, and you can manually aim at it.
Hits that are close enough have a chance to penetrate hull and attack the subsystem directly, once shields are down.
Note, damage that is transferred to a subsystem is not applied to the hull.

The galaxy map will tell you what kind of goods a system sells but it won’t tell you what if those goods are in stock. At least I think I have that right.

The alternative is to use this link to find trade goods which is updated by players.

Can anyone tell me how to get stolen combat stabilizers? Will a USS appear with dropped combat stabilizers for me to pick up thus making them stolen goods or will I have to get a cargo scanner and go pirating for them?
