Do the rings have actual Resource Extraction locations at that system?

Yes they do. I stopped going to those in the other system where I was mining. Is there an advantage to going to the Resource Extraction locations?

Maybe we could also add a link to Forger’s Pilot’s Guide thread or download?

It’s a good read that goes into more detail than the manual, and includes various collected development commentaries giving insight into design choices as well.

There is for me, as I’m a bounty hunter! :)

You really wanna be doin that?

i’m just sayin’ y’know…

Imperial slaves are supposed to be more like voluntarily indentured servants and bankrupts I think. Definitely the lowest class but not just cattle.

I spent the better part of the day on the basic combat tutorial, and haven’t beaten it yet. I’ve got controls adjusted and enough of the interface down that I can target the Sidewinder and pretty much keep it in my sights, but I can’t hit the side of a proverbial barn. Part of my problem is that I still move the mouse too much, even with sensitivity turned all the way down, and start swinging around wildly.

I think tomorrow I’ll focus on launching and docking so that I can actually start to do something in the game, and keep practicing combat in the hopes I eventually become competent.

try aiming where you know your target will be in two seconds and firing when he actually crosses your crosshair. that way you dont have to continuously chase it which leads to wild overcorrections (google ‘pilot induced oscillation’ for shits and giggles). or get a hotas.

They’re in there now, thanks Brian. Anyone can now point newcomers to Post #1 for a list of links.

Agreed. I should have included that. Brian do you mind adding it in?

Yup, that’s what I’ve been doing for the most part. I’ll revisit combat at some point, but there’s plenty else for us slow pokes to do.

Do I need insurance on the free eagle I was given from my preorder Mercenary pack etc? Not sure how to purchase insurance either. My daughter and I are sharing the character and progressing slowly. We already have a bounty on us because we had some type of door close on us in the docking area!

Insurance is automatic, as long as you have enough cash when you die, you can buy back your ship. The buy back insurance cost if you were to die can be seen in the first tab on the right menu. It pays to always make sure you have this much in your account as a buffer to cover any incidents that result in the destruction of your ship.

I’ve been itching to pick up Elite, but the learning curve is scaring me off a bit. Can I play at least a little effectively without devoting massive amounts of time? I don’t have my joystick anymore (CH Flightstick 4 lyfe, yo), so I was thinking about using a 360 controller.

I beat the original X-Wing (training and all), TIE fighter, I-War, Privateer, etc. - I love me some space games. But I can’t justify EVE-level dedication to a game, at least not with my current life.

Yes you can. Seriously, the only real barrier is coming to grips with controlling your ship with your desired control method. People here are using everything from M+K, 360 controller, stick and keyboard, to full HOTAS and TrackIR setups, so you’ll get plenty of advice on how to tweak controls if the defaults don’t work for you.

Other than that, it really is not all that complex, just a little obtuse - but before long you will still be flying around, doing delivery missions and trade runs and exploring around you, even if you stay clear of combat, mining, rare trading, piracy, bounty hunting, etc.

There’s not a lot more to it complexity-wise than something like X-Wing. Have a look through the quickstart guide, and the manual - see what you think.

There are many control options, and they all work well. Required level of dedication is like any other game, it’s closer to a single player game than an MMO.

From what I’ve read the only reason you would go to Resource Extraction Sites is to get bugged by pirates. As a miner, there’s no advantage to blasting rocks an Extraction site.

Elite is easier than X-Wing. Its just a bit of a shock going from modern Ubisoft style mission icons to suddenly being dumped into an open world using a control scheme with a hundred buttons and little direction. But after a few hours you’ll get up to speed.

Watch all the tutorial videos linked in the tutorial menu, play the tutorial missions until your comfortable (especially the docking and travel tutorial). Print out a physical copy of the 360 controller button mapping. Your first session with the game will be a slow learning session, but the second time you sit down with it, you’ll be having good fun. It really is an 80’s style game in that sense, but its not a rabbit hole of complexity like EVE.

Yeah, if you beat the original X-Wing. I’m ready to bow to you and chant “we’re not worthy”. That’s truly amazing. Elite is nothing compared to that game. It’s a walk in the park so far. And if you die, you just pay some insurance. In X-wing, if you died, you had to start the game over from the beginning.

You didn’t beat X-Wing?

I think there’s some serious bug with the pirate hunting missions you pick up from stations where you will run into an NPC that will make you a counter offer to not kill the pirates. The first time it happened I opened fire on the NPC making the offer thinking he was a pirate but he must have been “clean” as I then had a bounty on my head. Another time I took a pirate mission I accepted the counter proposal and went to the designated system to get my reward. Unfortunately going that route lowers your reputation with the original mission giver. The next time I just ignored the counter offer and went hunting pirates but I noticed the number of pirates I had to kill under the transaction screen was not going down as I took them out one by one. WTF? I eventually went back to the station to try and claim my reward but my only option was to abandon the mission.

So abandoning a mission one too many times has apparently made me hostile to the Federation and so now every where I go I got the Feds hunting me. Interestingly stations don’t open fire upon me but I wonder if it’s because they’re only aligned with the Federation and not a native Federation station. This really blows and at this point I’m not sure how to get back on the Fed’s good side. I tried doing some missions for allied clients of the Federation but it’s a royal pain to be dodging security patrols everywhere I go. I also attempted a black ops mission for the Fed navy but I couldn’t take the target out as I’m still in my POS Sidewinder which I really can’t wait to get the fuck out of.
