Well, sure, but I think it’s a bit disingenuous to answer mok’s question as if that’s part of the game right now. Answering “a little bit from column a and a little bit from column b” when the game is currently just “column b” doesn’t paint an accurate picture.

There’s no reason why simminess could be maintained by offering services analogous to the real world: a ship hire service available at larger stations (hire a Sidewinder for a daily rate, you pay for dings, or insurance to cover total ship loss); a taxi service (in real time); asking other players / npcs for a lift, paid for of course, etc etc. It would create some interesting gameplay possibilities.

I sold it immediately, but no I don’t think you get a replacement. Sell it! You can always buy another one later on if you want to go the super fast but extremely fragile combat route (good luck!).

Yeah, that’s what I was hoping for. I’m not in any position now to maintain multiple ships, but I’m imagining down the line it might be worthwhile to have separate dedicated fighting and mining ships. Sounds like the game doesn’t really do anything to make this less of a hassle.

I haven’t calculated resale value, but the game seems pretty generous in the prices its gives you for used spaceship parts. Just sell it and buy a new one when you eventually need it. You won’t lose much.

Just be wary that your new ship will not be well fitted out, so you’ll need that money (and a bit more) to bring your new ship up to fighting strength. Also be aware that your new ship will have a higher rebuy cost in the event of its destruction in heroic combat (or ignominiously crashing into a Space Station wall).

I will really look forward to your review Tom. This incarnation of Elite is perhaps one of the most polarising games I have ever seen. I am myself a bit “bipolar” about it.

On the one hand, I think that is a pinnacle of game design, if game design is about creating the perfect machine that creates both a feeling of immersion and a compulsion to engage in very repetitive tasks for extended periods of time. On the other hand, I find it pretty much to lack essential features to provide players with emotion, attachment and a sense of interacting with a living world.

I am an ex-smoker. I feel Elite Dangerous is a bit like my former vice. I know it’s killing me and I don’t quite like it, yet at the same time, I can’t just help doing it.

There were several games released in 2014 that nailed the feel of their inspiration in a way that I haven’t seen in years, but they tend to be very unforgiving as a result. Elite jettisons a lot of modern game design tenets, which makes me wonder if they weren’t best jettisoned anyway. Few games grab me these days because they feel so generic, but Elite feels fresh. A lot of this is because it doesn’t front-load the payoff like a lot of modern games do, with their toyboxes of things to click on and investigate. Here you need to actually work, hard, in order to reach the payoffs. And like any satisfying work, the results are worth it. Having said that, it’s clearly not where it could be yet, not by any means. It’s not a perfect game, but it is closer to the perfect set-up for one.

If mok (or anyone coming to Elite: Dangerous) is in any way a ‘modern’ MMO fan, i would agree. The closest you have to guilds in elite are the factions, and as you can work for any and all that dilutes things to some extent (while giving you more stuff to grind at). The mp instances seem to be suffering some kind of technical issue that is probably user end related (can’t find the thread currently, but one user posted what he had to do at his end firewall side to start to see plenty off other Cmdrs in his online game), and the tools in general to aid mp and co-op play are sub 1990’s standard.

But to keep that in some kind of context, much of the game systems are lacking (as in not finished/polished) and i think we can say with reasonable certainty that the game was rushed for an xmas release. We don’t even have full/complete text for item/cargo types, no real info in game on so many things. But as a starting framework for expanding on, this is going to be a game that is hard to beat. I certainly wouldn’t envy anyone looking to do an ‘honest’ review of the current game.

Last night the wife was out, daughter in her room, so I hooked my laptop to the HDTV, turned off the lights, and ran ED on the big screen. Such immersion, it was great. The dogs were unimpressed.

I finally made about 60K doing trading and missions, so I ended the evening by trading in my Sidey for a Hauler. Onward to profit!

There are groups of people who have organised to help their chosen minor factions expand to and take over neighboring systems. Which at the same time brings conflict from other players looking to stop them by supporting another faction in the area, or simply taking the opportunity to pirate all the juicy targets.

Rock on Tyler!

here’s a usefull link: http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/ for making that hauler into a lakon in about one or two evenings of play.

Thanks. I’d love to haul me some rares. But I don’t understand how that page works. I guess if you find rares for sale somewhere, you can plug in the info to find potential buyers?

there are several YT’s I saw that had this topic. Essentially - rares appear in different colors, and you purchase them. The selling value of the rare commodity is based on distance from origin purchase point. I seem to recall the value peaks towards 140 light years away.

Here’s a good one on that topic, as he references a forum post on the subject with a chart:

Yay, they fixed same-faction hostility when bounty hunting in today’s 1.04 patch! No more shooting a wanted ship and having the whole sector go apeshit on you.

  • Updated exoplanets Kepler 438 b and 442 b

So cool.

What I meaaaaaaant by this is that even though there’s no formal grouping/wings as of yet, players are still banding together to effect change here and there, such as bringing about a civil war in one system or helping switch its faction in another. This, coupled with the ongoing story beats means people are indeed “grouping together in guild like fashion and trying to control areas” even though there aren’t effectively guilds/wings yet.

Now don’t you dare ever question me again, son. ;)

I am about to arrive at Alpha Centauri, Hutton Orbital, I dare anyone else to repeat this, cause this was a LENGHTY travel…I expect to overshoot quite a lot too as I don’t have time to monitor it constantly.

However, I hope and expect a large cargo of rares there for me to purchase.

I’m currently running a souped up MK III with probably up to 3 million worth of stuff in it…where 1,5 is the frameshift alone.

Morgan Industries is known to jack up the prices on rares.

I’ve been told many a time to never take a mission to go there.

conversely i will enjoy getting there. (Pours tea from flask, checks location of bath towel and opens a book, fishing by J.R.Hartley). Probably.
