What is this and where did you find it?!
I don’t even own the game and I want that ship! So sexy.

Does anyone know if now with the reputation system being fixed does your reputation rise with the faction you turn in bounties to? Or do only missions improve faction standing?

It’s the Fer de Lance, via today’s newsletter.
Bounties always have given you faction rep.

Good lord, I have ship envy.
So the Motrona Experience Jelly that I picked up from that Fed Dropship turned out to be worth 13,500 CR off the bat. I actually have no idea where they come from, nor whether it’s worth traveling 170 Ly to get a better price, but it sounds like fun. Even more fun is doing this in Open Play. I figured hey, if I get pirated then it’s not like I paid for them. So first I figured I’d fly to Eriani, where I know it’s possible to get other rares, although I’m not sure if I need to fly into a coriolis station to buy them. That would be bad with my stolen Jelly. So I set off on my rather long journey, and about halfway through (with about half a dozen systems left to go) I suddenly see three players in the system. Well, better get the hell out of here in case one of them in a pirate. The next system I arrive and jump straight out again, then decide to wait a bit. Sure enough, a hollow dot appears on the scanner. It turns into a hollow triangle. Oh shit! Of course this might all be in my mind, but it appears to be heading in my direction. FRIENDSHIP DRIVE CHARGING! For the first couple of jumps, a hollow dot appeared behind me just as I was about to jump out again, but eventually it disappeared. I arrived in Eriani and headed towards a platform, 26 Ls away… but behind a planet, so a very slow approach. There were several player ships in the system, to say I was worried was an understatement, but I finally arrived and docked safely. I’ll say this for Open Play, it’s a hell of a lot more tense! I love it. Well, at least until I get interdicted and my ship and beautiful cargo destroyed by someone packing ridiculous firepower.
Time to buy some more rares from here and head into the wild black yonder.
Krayzkrok are those goods marked as stolen? I don’t know if stolen goods sold on the black market are affected by the distance like normal rares, you should jump a few systems and see if the price changes.
Whats a good way to modify my hauler for loooonnnnggg distance rare trading?
Hmm, that’s weird, my interest in this has suddenly dropped off a cliff.
So long as I was struggling learning how to fly, dock, supercruise, fight, how to trade, etc., the game was interesting, and the simple act of flying around trading was realistic and deeply immersive. But the other day, I just couldn’t find any motivation to make money in the game. The hamster-wheelish nature of it has just suddenly leapt to the foreground, and the immersion factor doesn’t seem to be enough to compensate.
There just doesn’t seem to be enough there there. I feel I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth out of the game, and have enjoyed my time in it tremendously, and I think it’s a wonderfully made thing. But I’m just not inclined to play it any more.
Needs more sand.
Meanwhile, I think it will be one of those games like Warframe, that I have permanently on my hard drive and dip into now and then and get obsessed with for a few days or weeks, then lose interest in again.
(Note: on reflection, this may not be so much a problem with the game, but a problem with the Explorer mentality, which I’m mainly inclined towards. Games for me are generally interesting so long as I’m discovering and learning. Usually, when I’ve done everything there is to do in a game at least once, I lose interest. That’s good for MMOs because MMOs are usually so huge that they have enough content to sustain that discovery vector for quite some time, but this game is really in its barebones infancy at the moment. I fully expect it to develop into something rich, complex and wonderful, and I’ll be along for the ride with updates, etc.)
I was really excited when I got my Cobra, and I’m still enjoying the incremental gear upgrades and smearing enemy craft faster. The thing driving me now is trying to complete the next Naval Progression mission, which has proven a tough nut to crack. If I bounce off that too many times, my interest might start to peter out too. We’ll see. I’m really, really enjoying the dogfights, and a lot of the rest amounts to flying around trying to get to the next one.

I don’t think you’re alone. In my opinion Frontier did an excellent job laying a wide, functional, foundation that just oozes atmosphere. The game has smuggling, piracy, bounty hunting, trade, exploration, mission running, conflict zones, dynamic systems for system state change, etc. Now what they need to do is continue to refine those aspects of the game and pump more content into them, which I’m sure they’re working on.
For a team their size and their budget, I think they absolutely nailed it in taking this approach. I’d rather them get the core in a good place and then build from there, as opposed to the throw-everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach of some other games.
For real? Hmmm. I think you may be right, as the price is basically similar to the galactic average despite me being 45 Ly from source. This is a bit of a bummer because I’ve already set off from Eraini, having decided not to buy any rares there (hot station!) and instead make my way 170 Ly away to sell these, then buy some rares there and make my way back to Eraini. So I’m carrying these small number of Jellies to see if I can make it without being pirated, although perhaps they’ll scan me and decide it’s not worth it. Amazingly, since carrying these I have seen player ships in nearly every system, and my imagination is having a great time imagining them on my tail trying to get close enough to interdict. If they do, I’m not sure if I should fight, flee or capitulate. I guess I’ll find out.
The latest newsletter states that they are increasing the size of the team working on Elite, and along with the expansion(s) will be providing free content updates (as evidenced by upcoming Fer-de-Lance) as well as bug fixes.

Good. I wasn’t sure since my rep never seemed to increase before despite collecting many many bounties. I imagine that was due to the negative rep issue they just fixed.
Yeah, totally agree. These guys are obviously as smart as whips (Cambridge boffins lol), they’ve done a great job so far and I have every confidence the games’s going to incrementally get the sand it needs for the popularity, retention and long term stability it deserves. It’s a brillliant foundation of minigames within games within a game. Virtually everything in it is a game, with the possibility of progress (often through practice!) and loss. Genius.
Sorry to bug you guys about stuttering issues but I have to ask:
Does anyone get a few seconds of stuttering every 20 seconds or so within the game? My game is perfectly smooth other than that. The stutter doesn’t show up in the FPS counter or frame time log so I think it’s something later in the chain of events.
Some folks seem to have similar stutters in open and group play, but not in solo. Does this happen in all three modes?
Yes, try playing solo and see if the problem persists. Stuttering is a widely reported problem in open play.
