This is correct. I was using one on my Bitin’ Sidey before I retired it in favour of the Viper. They greatly improve combat uptime in tense fights against much stronger foes. They’re also one of the most overpowered and broken aspects of the game, as you can install multiple SCBs on your ship. It makes you able to win almost any fight by attrition alone. I expect a nerf which limits each ship to one SCB.

i like that beam laser/rail gun trick. gonna have a go asap.

Thanks Papageno … that tip you gave a few pages ago on that system is great. What a great little mining area.

Good to know! I’m off to give it a try…

Heh, I hope it’s not completely depleted by the time I get out there. :D Also, I think I overstated the distance from Sol.

EDIT: BTW, how are the prices for gold and such at the industrial station(s?) in that system?

I know exactly what you mean. I had a moment like that in the game and it made me really get an idea for how damn big the galaxy is, even with the ability to bounce from star to star in a blink, in-game. Staggeringly huge. It made me feel very small in a cool way.

Yeah this game really does help get some of the scale across. Even WITH the ability to tear up the speed of light the galaxy is just huge!

Oh god, why did I deny myself headtracking for so long? It’s so amazing.

I received a 77K bounty by hitting an Anaconda once in the middle of a fight in an Unidentified Signal Source. I didn’t even get the last hit. I thought you had to steal the kills for those.

Oh well, I’ll pretend I preordered and sold my free Eagle. Time to go shopping with virtual scharmers as my personal assistant.

I did it! I sneaked into a space station with a cargo full of stolen booty without being scanned. Basically I sat about 10km away from the opening, shut off all non-essential modules (as Papageno suggested), activated silent running, and gently coasted in. Checked Contacts, no fine. It was quite thrilling, actually. My Viper did overheat slightly so I’ll start a little closer next time.

From what I’ve read, that’s been changed so that you have to get one of the last hits within the last ten seconds of the lifespan of the target. I think.

I am trying to learn to mine but am having a huge problem with scooping up the materials.

I target a piece I just mined and then having my scoop activated - a blue box appears in the target box. Do I keep the piece in the center of that blue box? I am trying to do that but a lot of times I just crash into the piece instead of scooping it up. :)

A couple of things I wish for:

[li]That only my landing bay would show up in orange. Why do they all have to light up? [/li][li]I would like to pick a system on the galaxy map and plot a course to another system and the in between systems I have to jump through are automatically plotted with my engine’s ability and mass. I have tried to look at 2d representations on the web to plot a course but all of them do not take my ever growing older eyesight into account. :)[/li][li]How about the ability to print out the prices at a system (at the very least).[/li][/ol]

Yes, try to keep the piece in the center as you approach. You’re probably going too fast. Until you get the hang of it, it’s best to come to a full stop about 100m from the piece , then slowly inch forward at <10K speed.

Thx, khgoh

The metal prices are great, above the average. The mineral prices are weak and below average but who really collects that stuff.

I only have mined the pristine metallic ring and the station is right beside the ring.

There’s some subtlety to cargo scooping that I’m trying to figure out. The basics are simple: approach and center the cargo / materials on the target reticle, and make sure your speed is below a certain threshold. When you’re approaching too fast, you’ll hear a harsh warning siren and there will be a red border around the cargo scoop target box. When it’s a safer speed the tone becomes more bell-like, and the target box has a blue border. I have destroyed cargo at this “safe speed” however, which I’ve interpreted to mean that the faster you’re going (even within the safe speed zone), the more damage you’ll do to the crate / material. When I’m going really slowly and scoop cargo, there’s a nice, smooth mechanical sound. If I’m going a little faster but still in the “safe” zone, it sounds like I crashed into it. When you target crates (presumably minerals too?) it shows the hull integrity of the container, so I’m guessing that higher speeds a more likely to cause some damage to its integrity and possibly destroy it, even within the “safe” window. It’s also possible that you cause more damage the further from the center reticle you are when it’s collected. Short story, slow and steady. ;)

If you bring up the target system and select the “Plot route” option on the hovering menu, it will plot shortest route from your current position to the target system. Is that what you mean? I have noticed, though, that it doesn’t always choose longer jumps that are still within your jump range (even with no cargo). I can actually plot a route with less jumps manually.

yo krokster did you see the ‘most economic/fastest’ route toggle in the nav tab in your galaxy map? have a go m8!

Indeed, and when I tried selecting one or the other, it made zero difference to the route I selected. I actually assume it’s not working properly, or I’m not using it properly. If I click on a destination, select Plot Route, then toggle this and/or select Plot Route again, nothing changes at all. Does it only work the first time I open the galaxy map or something?

Works for me - the jump lines change when I toggle the setting, and hitting Plot Route again maps a new route. More, shorter jumps take less fuel than fewer, longer jumps because the relationship between distance and fuel consumption is non-linear. It defaults to picking the most economical.

What trick?

Also - I’m going to have to live vicariously through you all. No time for fun :( so keep the posts heavy with text and pics and adventures!
