Which is what I’m still trying to do, believe it or not. I’ve restarted the game more times than I can count. Every time I screw up or just learn something new, I start a new game. Which is a goo sign, I guess, since it means it has it’s hooks in me.

And Pause is supposed to work (according to key bindings) in single play - which is the only way I’ve been playing.

Out of interest, why?

I’ve been pretty busy with work up through last weekend, so didin’t have a lot of time to invest anyway. I figured I would take 10-15 minute trial runs until I became comfortable with the different systems.

But, I mean, why bother restarting? Why not carry on with your free replacement Sidewinder?

All pause does (even in Solo) is bring up the menu, I’m pretty certain. It doesn’t stop the gameworld’s clock or freeze you in space or anything.

That’s been my experience. The mission clock continues when you log out of Solo too.

Because it’s not really “free”. There’s usually a loan attached that has to be repaid out of profits.

Why call it “Pause”? Makes no sense.

It’s most likely a vestigial option left over when Elite was going to have a separate offline mode.

Because it’s not really “free”. There’s usually a loan attached that has to be repaid out of profits.

Huh? The starting Sidey is always free. You lose your cargo, but then you don’t have any cargo if you restart either. You’re never going to be better off restarting than taking the free replacement.

Only if you wanna get a loan, otherwise the base/starting Sidewinder is indeed free.

Man, just when I think this game can’t get any better, I find a high intensity combat zone with capital ships! HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT.

If you are anywhere near Kappa Fornacis, get the hell over there now.

I was traveling with some rares, and arrived at KF to this sight…

Wow, I had to check this out! So I dropped off my rares, then came back to KF and pointed my FSD at the nearest Capital Ship.

Oh boy! This is what greeted me…

Actually, it wasn’t there when I arrived, it warped in and I got caught in whatever shockwave was produced, I thought I was dead as it flung me spinning through space and distorted my display, but fortunately no actual damage. The question I had was, should I join the side fighting against the Capital Ship, or the one fighting for it? I chose a side… and ended up on the same side as the Capital Ship. Ok, this should be fun, and holy shit was it fun. Flying in and around this ship while chasing quarry that was being pelted on all sides by both ship turrets and other vessels fighting alongside me was insane.

However, then it got real. I was playing in Open, and suddenly a player ship jumped in… and chose the other side. Fuck. Time to get the hell out of here, because by that time I’d accrued 66K worth of bonds, and I wasn’t about to lose that! I started to charge up the FSD but he was on me immediately. My only defense was the Capital Ship, so I blasted towards it, behind it and under it, hoping he’d not dare to get too close. By this stage my hull was down to… SHIT! 5%! Canopy integrity compromised. Fortunately he hasn’t hit anything vital yet (apart from my hull!), and I was able to blast out of range and jump to supercruise. There was a station nearby and I made it without being followed. My hands were shaking.

What a game this is, dayum!

Huh. The conflict zone tracking page on the official forum suggested the Kappa Fornacis conflict was over when I checked yesterday. So I’ve been hanging out around Sanna waiting for that one to kick off. I’ll wander over to KF tonight and have a look.

That looks AMAZING krok. I need to find one of thems. Nice job surviving as well!

Shots fired from Tom in his most overrated list!

Well he’s not wrong about those bullet points, from what I’ve seen!

The galaxy map seems okay though.

The bullet points:

A long shallow progression grind

I can’t really agree here, but I think the phrasing used is indicative that Tom and I are approaching the game in different ways (which you’d expect two unique humans to do).

zero social elements

Not quite, but close. I don’t mind too much because I approach this as a single player game with the ability to do some co-op, but no argument from me that it needs work here. I know it’s their first major update and all, but I still think it should have been there for release.

online-only DRM

Not really an issue for me, since I view the dynamic universe bit an integral part of why I’m interested in the game. If I had the offline option, I’d still play online. I can totally see how this is a deal breaker for some though.

wretched documentation

Agreed.

a half-baked attempt at the new-user experience

I’m not being snarky, but I honestly have no idea what this means.

a painfully clunky ingame map of the universe

I think it gets the job done. Like everything else it could use some improvements but I don’t find it too painful to use, given the amount of data it needs to convey.

sheepish and muted world-building

Agreed, definitely needs to be more player feedback.

a complete lack of space porn by keeping your view tethered to the interior of the cockpit.

This to me is the one “WTF?” entry on the list. “A complete lack of space porn”? Jesus christ, just look at this thread! Hell, krayzkrok’s post a few posts up is filled with space porn.

Anyway, the funny thing is that I agree with most of Tom’s points. They’re all things that are lacking and/or need some additional work. That being said, I’m really happy with my purchase. This game feels special to me and I think it has the potential to be amazing if updates continue to roll out.

Yeah, you have to get past the ships circling the station. You can either make it difficult to be seen (silent running), or difficult to be targetted (fly really fast) or make sure you hide when they start scanning (like boosting to get inside the station fast). The feds are subject to the same scanning time as other cargo scanners, it seems to take them about 5 seconds from the warning “Ship scan detected” until they see your goods.

Silent running isn’t perfect - they can still sometimes see and scan you, but those time it has happened, I solved it by accelerating to get inside and break line of sight before the scan completes. Still, I enjoy high-speed flying, so I usually just enter the station at around 400 units of speed and hope I can brake before I hit the far end of it.

Once inside the station, you’re in no danger of being scanned?
