So I was having trouble getting permission to dock at a place which should have been allowing me to land. Turns out when you get request denied, it is often because there are no open bays to dock at. Interesting that you are given 10 minutes to dock - so that means a dock is held up for 10 minutes each time someone requests it. On further research I find that if you don’t go in the hangar, but just hang out at the dock, you keep that slot occupied and no one can use it.
But also read (and tested) that if you leave the game, and go into solo mode, you can dock no problems.

After you scan a ringed planet (i.e. it no longer is listed as unexplored), go to the system map and click on the planet. In the info blurb on the left, at the bottom, should be information regarding its rings.

Are you heavily using your lateral and vertical thrusters in combat? When I started out I wasn’t using them at all and just turning and burning. I could barely line up a shot. Now I make very heavy use of the thrusters which has helped my targeting immensely.
Using vertical thrust also helps to avoid hitting the SA ships. When I find myself on a similar plane to the SA when chasing a target I usually thrust upwards in order to make sure they aren’t anywhere near my line of fire. This is especially important when chasing a fleeing enemy that is also being pursued by the SA.
No, pair rail gun with Fixed Beam laser. Assign to the same fire button. When you fire, the beam laser(s) will shoot while the rail gun(s) will charge. You’re essentially using the beam laser to make sure you’re aiming at the right spot so that when the rail gun fires, you don’t miss.
I’ve been using thrusters more and more in combat, especially with head tracking now, so I’ll give it a whirl.
Same fire button? Won’t that drain the rail gun’s limited ammo pretty damned quick?

If you don’t think you can land the shot, or if you don’t want to waste rail gun ammo, you just stop firing the beam laser before the rail gun goes off. The next time you fire, the rail gun has to build up the entire charge again.
I think I’ve settled on a pair of gimballed D-class beam lasers on my asp’s medium hardpoints. Anything smaller than a cobra I can cook effortlessly with the lasers, and anything larger I’ll use them to strip the shields and then finish off with cannon. So far it seems to work well, or at the very least, combats with nimble opponents don’t last so long that the authorities show up to “help out”.
I bought the Adder. It’s very different.
I don’t know why, but it feels more like I’m driving a big tub now. The view is way more restrictive compared to the Sidewinder, sadly. The sound effects for engines are slightly different, which surprised me a bit. I’m not sure if I like it yet.
I did buy my first Fuel scoop because of the extra slot I got over the Sidewinder. This thing is great! Best part is I don’t need to deploy it. It’s completely automatic.

Killed my first CMDR this evening in one of the neighboring Lave systems in a resource extraction site. Was minding my own business then suddenly under attack comes out of nowhere and I notice it’s a player in a Cobra - holy shit my first PvP experience in ED. He was listed as dangerous but I melted his face off with my beam lasers and then tore him a new one with multi cannons. Damn that felt good. Unfortunately he only had an 8K bounty and on top of that I resumed my hunt for NPC pirates where I eventually collided with an asteroid and died.
Protip: Use extreme caution while fighting in extraction sites that happen to be in the shadow of the planet. It’s easy to lose site of all those nasty rocks while you’re focused on a wanted Bob Ross who’s harassing miners in his Cobra.
Welp, my baby now has fixed beams and rail guns. Can’t wait to try 'em out tomorrow. Had to turn off some stuff to make sure shit was powered. How does one set.power groups/priorities properly?

Set things you don’t need on in combat to higher numbers. Systems turn off automatically according to their priority, higher first. So, for example, if you have an FSD interdiction device you’ve not going to be using it in combat so set that to two and it will be powered down before anything that’s a 1.
Sha-weeeeeeewt. Thanks man!

Naw fixed. Like the rock said, they are hitscan so you can use the beams for ranging and then BAM the rails hit. Rails fire a little after you pull the trigger so if you put them in a group with the beams that gives a little time to aim. Heck if you want to conserve ammo you can just keep the bursts on the beam short ;-) anyway. I now have like five firing groups just to find what configuration works best. I will find it hard to ditch the two medium-size gimballed autocannons though. they are too much fun.
Last night I cruised to a “Seeking Treasures” nav point and found a bunch of trade ships there. Are we supposed to be able to interact with them?
One of the ships was Wanted so I started attacking. Then his two friends joined in and quickly depleted my shields. I got the heck out of there!
I’ve only encountered system after system lately that has “Seeking Luxuries” nav points near every planet in a system, which all have those big ships you’re talking about. No idea what that’s about.

With ships that want stuff, (not unlike pirates) I think you just need to jettison what they want near to them. Presumably they’ll transfer some credits to you in recompense when they pick it up.
EDIT: Reading up a bit on it, it looks like if you’re carrying something they want, there’s some kind of auto transaction that takes place when you get close to their ship–the cargo will be missing from your hold and you get wired the credits.
If you cargo scan them, they’ll tell you exactly what they’re after.
Gah, I still suck with fixed weapons, and man that rail gun has a low amount of ammo. Back to gimbaled I go. ;)

Oh good, it’s not just me! ;)
Ah, that makes sense. I don’t have a cargo scanner yet, guess that’s next on my purchase list.
