Hhahahahah, good, it’s not just me either! ;)

If anyone is worried about risking their ship in the process of getting better at combat don’t forget that you can always go back to the training missions. I spent a lot of time playing the later combat training missions repeatedly until I got the hang of things. I imagine most people will just play through the missions until they beat each one once, but it is useful to repeat the missions until you can be them quickly and easily.

It’s not just you. While I feel I have some combat competency now it certainly didn’t start that way. Despite some faint glimmers of muscle memory and a prior familiarity with the radar display from having played a huge amount of Elite in the mid 80s, when I first got ED I couldn’t hit anything with fixed weapons and my most frequent thought in combat was “where the hell did he go”.

Top tip of the day, always TEST your new weapons load out in a safe place after purchasing.

So I upgraded my Cobra to have 3 beam lasers and a multi cannon in addition to some other power consuming upgrades on top of the base power plant.

I had just spent a few minutes fuel scooping around a star with a full 20 tons of Progenitor Cells in the hold. Suddenly I get interdicted by a pirate. Full of panic I tag him and then start to smile as I see its just a lowly Eagle. This fool is going to be the first victim of my new weapons load outs. He starts pinging me and after he flys by I ACTIVATE THE WEAPON PODS!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmnnnnn. Power down, you have 3 mins 23 secs of life support remaining… heat level critical 107, 109 rising. wtf? WTF WTF??? Ping ping ping! In full on panic mode now I try and boost away ,smoke rising from the cockpit, damage sounds from rear. 2 mins life support left. Aeeeiiii!!! PANIIICCCC! Quit game, quit game. “You must wait 45 seconds to quit game” . I just waited it out as I had no idea what the hell was happening. And made it safe. When I logged back in I was alive but with 40% hull left. I limped home in solo mode. :)

So yes, you can overload your ships power capacity if you turn on too many power sucking weapons :)

That happened to me too. Pretty funny. :)

And i love that, that it has that level of ‘Mech Commander’ type loadout concerns in terms of power usage vs power supply. Shame it didn’t make it crystal clear in the purchase screen just how much you are going to be using with the chosen option BEFORE you bought it right?

When you buy a component it shows you what the power load will be with hardpoints deployed or retracted.

Edit: To Rod. Zak, it does show you before you purchase. Same as it shows you the change in ship weight, jump distance etc.

There is already a Dangerous player? I didn’t see the announcement, there was some money prizes for the first person to get that status.

But you have to do the math yourself for a combined loadout, it would be nice to have the data of ‘Power Plant Power’ vs ‘Maximum power drawn’ or some such, just some numbers in brackets after each individual weapon/system etc. It wouldn’t be hard, and it is really the advantage of the computer medium over pen and paper (and calculator). Edit: @Ginger, so maybe it does? I had heard it did not, which is why quite a few people seem to have the issue as Rod mentioned.

I went to an unidentified signal and found a canister full of “Prototype Tech”. Could not load it in cargo, didn’t have the ability to scan it (basic sidewinder), and could not destroy it.

Thanks, yeah I pay attention to the little power numbers when buying … now :) I also went out and tested my new load out to see how long a bust I would get before recharge etc. Well worth doing.

It says so on the fitting screen, bottom right corner. I can’t remember right now but it should say something like “Current power usage” “Deployed power usage” “Max power”

Deployed is with hardpoints out obviously.

You can also switch prioritys mid flight, like switching your cargo hatch or interdictor out when you have hardpoints deployed to use less energy.

Ok, thanks MrCoffee. Rod is just a dumbass then ;) And i don’t know what i’m talking about, move along, move along these are not the Elite Facts you are looking for!

I was probably conflating his rank with that of the many AI I’ve killed. I know he wasn’t listed as novice but I’m going to stick with dangerous to impressive the arcturian ladies.

I don’t think this has been metioned yet, but here’s a website where you can experiment with different load outs for all of the ships available in game.

Continuing my “I suck at combat” saga, I have avoided combat in-game and have had a blast trading, doing missions and other boring pacifistic stuff. I did, though, finally manage to beat the first combat tutorial after realizing I need to add pips to WEP. I can’t come close to surviving in the second combat tutorial, where the AI is not so brain-dead.

Wondering if I would be better at combat in-game simply by getting a properly outfitted ship (now that I’m getting to the point where I can afford that) compared to the basic pulse lasers-only in the tutorial ship.

Hah i was surprised, it’s a huge grind to get to that status. I killed so many NPCs and im barely above novice.

Probably, the tutorial ship has fixed weapons, in the normal game you can get the gimballed ones that make it easier for people like me that suck at aiming to be able to hit stuff.

So I tried a Type 6…for about 45 minutes. Got so bored I ran back to my Cobra. I’m never leaving you again baby. hugs Cobra

But the profitz man!
