Hey, Joe M, please let us know what sort of detents, if any, are built into the Rhino’s throttle. I really didn’t like them on the X-52 Pro I tried.

They can be removed. I’m debating it, especially the one at idle. I’ve already removed the annoying pinky switch.

I won’t pretend to know what you just asked me. Fortunately Tim is on the case!

A little overwhelmed here. SO MANY BUTTONS. AND KNOBS. AND SWITCHES.

I’ve managed some training missions, however. So, um, progress?

I wasn’t clear. I was talking about the X52 Pro. Move the throttle through its full range of motion and see if you feel and change in force near the ends. It’s used for jet sims to act like an idle cutoff and afterburner switch. Somewhat annoying in a game like Elite but I found it kind of nice. Pushing through the detents got me “in the mood” for full throttle or landing. :)

I’m sure we could answer this in 5 seconds on Google but there you go.

Also, using freelook mode in the cockpit is nearly impossible with the mouse nub on the side of the throttle. I can’t get used to it.

So don’t use it. I have freelook on a toggle (clicking the throttle wheel) and then look around with the main joystick hat.

I’ve already removed the annoying pinky switch.

Wha?

It feels like equal resistance top to bottom. This article indicates there are detents on other bits but I have no idea what they’re talking about. This is going to be a bit of a process, I suspect.

The rotary dials that spin on the throttle: you can feel some resistance at a certain point, probably the center. Looks like none on the throttle.

None of this really matters, just personal preference. Enjoy the new joystick. You should try one of those free DCS jet sims for a few hours just for fun.

I’ve been very happy with the amount of content in the game so far. It’s not as flushed out as Privateer, but there turned out to be a lot more in the game than I was expecting, since after Zak’s fear-mongering, I was expecting there to be a very bare-bones game. But there’s meat on them bones! Yaaar!

Just like with Privateer’s expansion, I hope they add more to the universe and flesh it out. Ideally, I’d actually like to see a single player story in there too, like Privateer, but I doubt that’s in the cards. Still, I do like what I read sometimes on Qt3 about conflict zones and what capital ships, and fighting going on in certain systems. I haven’t seen that myself yet, but just the idea that I’ve heard that it’s there adds to the feeling of a more fleshed out universe. If that makes any sense?

I got my Viper upgraded to all A equipment for the important things (I still have a C life support and the basic kill warrant scanner), so I decided it was time to start taking on the high paying hunt a pirate missions. Yesterday I had my most changeling and satisfying fight so far. I had done two of these missions previously. This guy was far more difficult than my prior prey. He was elite and he lived up to the reputation. His anaconda was outfitted with a plasma accelerator, missiles, and lots of turreted pulse and beam lasers, and he knew how to fly it.

Even when keeping away from his front arc all those turrets wore down my shields within minutes. In my first skirmish with him I only managed to get his shields maybe halfway down before having to boost away and recharge mine. It took me three iterations of engaging and then running to away to recharge before I finally got his shields down the first time. I then used subsystem targeting to focus on his shield generator. Several engagements later I had finally destroyed it. After that it was only a matter of time. Quite a long time actually, as I still needed to periodically get out of gun range and power up my shields.

The whole battle took some 40 minutes. I had taken some hits but I came away not badly damaged, down to 81%. Between the bounty and the mission reward it came out to almost 200k, not a bad payoff at all.

I sometimes struggle with the idea of doing these elite bounty-hunting missions when the payoffs are so terrible and the risks are high (at least for us Viper drivers). I now drive a Type 6 and I make about 200,000 in 10 minutes. I can also make the same in about 30 minutes when I was hunting in the RESes (before they nerfed it).

I didn’t see an explanation for the RES nerf. What’s the deal?

I did some reading, apparently they won’t spawn endless bad guys anymore I think. I’ve not tried this yet, but I think the solution would be to frameshift to another RES, as there never seems to be just one.

I used to have one of those before I upgraded to the X-55. I had it set up to only use the buttons on the left side of the stick, so I could keep my left hand there with thumb on the throttle, and right hand on the stick. In the beginning I had trouble mapping everything, but then I realised that the buttons worked really well mapped as qualifiers for the buttons on the stick. So the hat switch on the stick normally worked as up/down left/right thrusters, and for navigating menus. But with a press of one of the left-side buttons it became power distribution. With another I used it to look at the different panels.

So that’s my suggestion, keep your hand on the buttons will let you identify them quickly with some practice. (Worst case, put small drops of glue on them, to make a sort of braille pattern so you can tell them apart). And use them mainly to vary how the more convenient stick-buttons work.

Glad to hear :) I’m finding myself actually playing more FFED3D currently, and games like Privateer and Independence War (thanks GoG) are just a more complete experience. Graphically and in terms of the feel of flight, ED wins hands down. I’m still on the tutorials, getting better at FAO flying, and watching the patch updates with interest.

That’s… awesome, thanks for the suggestion! I’ll try and set this up after work and give it a spin tonight. Thanks so much!

TRAVEL TRAINING COMPLETE

Good lord docking was nerve wracking. I feel like the first time will be the worst time, but damn. I suspect I’m not the only one who’s left a little paint on the side of that space station.

No matter, going into hyperspace was easily the coolest thing I’ve done this week. BY FAR.

Thats awesome. My son was beside me the first time I did hyperspace. We both did the “wow” thing at the same time.

I decided to check out the homeworld. I planned to do a tour of the planets but I ended up spending almost all my time last night just flying around, and through, the capital ship parked around Earth. If you haven’t checked it out already it’s worth stopping by. I’d recommend doing it in a small ship so you can fly inside.

I’m done with rare trading for now, and mining bored me to tears. So I’m finally going to try bounty hunting, even though I suck at combat. I have 250K cr in the bank and an upgraded Hauler. Should I do A or B?

A) Leave my Hauler at Lave, buy a cheapo Sidewinder again and then upgrade it pretty. That way if I need cash, I can go back to the Hauler and do a rare run.
B) Sell my Hauler (thinking I might get another $100K) and get a slightly better fightin’ ship and upgrades.

–If I leave my hauler at Lave, I assume it will always be there for me, garaged and safe?

B). Grind to an Adder. Ship is cheap and better than either hauler or sidewinder.
