Had an infuriating session last night where i lost my vulture twice in the space of a half hour. The first to an anaconda that slammed into me twice in short order - the first shattered my shields, and damaged hull, the second crushed what was left…and he was at 0% powerdrive…grr. The second was worse in that i was chasing down another anaconda, and was greedy for his bounty. Knowing i was late on the scene, and he was almost dead, i fired at him before my scanner evaluated him as wanted (i could see the all the security craft firing at him, so i knew he was) - Bingo, 195cr fine and now I’m wanted, and as the anaconda disappeared in a sea of fine mist, the host of security craft turned on me, the scourge of the galaxy, and vaporized me before i could clear mass-lock of the asteroid field…

Something similar happened to me last night. The local pirate faction is Hostile to me after a lot of bounty hunting. I was looking around the RES for criminals when I started getting attacked by a wing of three pirate ships, and since they got the drop on me they were seriously laying down the hurt. I hurried and hit my Target Next Enemy key and went to town, bringing an enemy Cobra down. My shields were dropping fast, though, so I had to quickly try to eliminate another one of the two remaining targets. The problem was, this second ship apparently hadn’t opened fire yet or something (I guess only his two wingmates were?) because I hit him and… 400cr bounty. I’ve never had to scan a ship that’s actively attacking me, so it must have been his two buddies shooting, not him, despite him being red on my radar. So now do I not only have the remaining pirates in the wing hammering at my hull, but I have all 13 security vessels opening fire on me as well.

That is the single largest aggravation in the entire game for me right now. Okay, give me a fine to pay for incidental damages or whatever, but the fact that accruing such a minuscule bounty (why is it a bounty anyway, and not a fine?) causes every cop in the entire quadrant to drop whatever they were doing to go cash in on those 400 credits is just ridiculous. I usually get away, bit it absolutely drives me nuts to have to stop what I’m doing, supercruise to an outpost, pay my bounty, and then travel all the way back. Every time it happens, there goes 5 minutes. Aggravating! If they go ahead with the proposed change to make bounties last for days, I’m probably done with any sort of bounty hunting in the game.

How hard it would it be to program a “measured response” routine for cops and other AI bounty hunters; e.g. 400 creds might get you sniffed, 150K creds will get you sniffed. It’s like a cop shooting a kid smoking a joint on a street corner whilst a gang rape goes unnoticed on the opposite corner. Or maybe… wait. Are FD making a subversive statement on American law enforcement?

Logged in and ran a trade mission; Earned 600 credits; Logged out again.

I suppose what I would have liked the game to have is some sort of ‘optional’ career arch that say, puts you as a pilot for a faction and lets you fight. Considering how expensive it was just to park in the wrong spot in a station I have been afraid to even fire my lasers and am contemplating selling them to get more money for a bigger trading vessel.

Basically what I am wondering; When can I go pew-pew with my lazers without ending up broke and having to restart the game. And oh yea, since I already have a ‘pilot’; any way to “back him up” and create another to try out a different “start of game” style - or is there no point doing that?

(This would have all been solved if the game had a proper SINGLE PLAYER mode (offline) so I could hack the hell out of the game to give myself some credits…)

If you want a more focused, directed experience, you might wanna go play Starpoint Gemini 2, as you can choose specific “career paths” via RPG elements, and cheat as well!

Elite really isn’t about that.

Too funny! My friends and I make the same joke. It was especially amusing since I started out at Ferguson City in Chemaku…

OMG you guys lookit, soundtrack!

I’d recommend doing the combat training missions repeatedly to get some initial experience with the pew pew.

You can go straight to bounty hunting. It will be tough at first as you’ll have to stick close to the system authority and steal kills from them. Fortunately you have nothing to when you’re in the starting sidewinder. If you die you get a free one. Even as you make upgrades the insurance cost will be trivial for a while.

When you have no seed money, normal trade won’t get you far. If you want to start by trading do missions rather than try to trade commodities. There are courier missions and small trade runs you can do. If you are trading, it’s really cheap to upgrade your cargo bay and also ditch the discovery scanner for another cargo bay to maximize your hold size.

Also, check the OP in this thread. Brian did a great job collecting all kinds of info, especially for new players. It will help a lot.

Well, looks like my x52 just died last night…worked fine the night before, then…nothing, no lights, no recognition…just dead stick. Odd. Sent in support to madkatz, be interesting to see what they do…

I had to turn in the DK2 I had on loan to its rightful owner. He liked the googly eyes i glued onto it very much ;-) I’ll miss it, especially when I get back from my current exploration trip. because i’ll be getting back into combat. Hopefully the exploration data will pay for a vulture. I am currently a good 3000 light years out and intending to go quite a ways further before turning back. One of my goals is to find a not previously discovered earth like world. Haven’t so far, but i did put my name on a couple water worlds.

Anyway. With the dk2 out of the house, I rigged my old trackIR back up. had to repair the trackclip thingamibob with a healthy dose of duckttape but it works just fine. found a nice profile that puts big deadzones at the panels, making those pretty comfortable to use.

Have you tried rebooting/shutting off your PC a few times? I had the same problem once with my X52 Pro, and rebooting solved it. My motherboard (ASRock) has been wonky lately when it comes to powering on USB peripherals.

I skipped the kickstarter for this, looks kind of interesting now. Is there a good current new user guide? Can I get by with just the $60 digital download or is it really necessary to buy other stuff to have fun?

No extra ships to buy here, just the $60 buy in for the digital download.

As for guides, this is a simple start:

The first post has even more goodies:

Ya, i reboot my pc daily. I also tried it on another pc, and the same result…interesting though, i also have an asrock mb…hmm, but the secondary pc i tested on isnt asrock, so that can’t be it. Just a strange problem to suddenly happen, and it’s not like the wires are frayed or anything, maybe i need to try it on a third pc…

Wait, you can put deadzones on the x-axis ends? I would love a “snap” at the right and left edges for panels, instead of the weird head-dip I do right now to access them.

There are profiles already made with this. Fastest way is to search Google.

You still have to look down a little.

A while back they fixed it so you can just use the keyboard commands or assign joystick buttons to lock your view to the panels.

I should add, it works for me using a TrackIR, so I’m not sure if it also works for the Rift.
