Any sign of the XboxOne version at E3?

I have this on PC, but haven’t tried it yet. Have such a huge backlog of great games that letting this one cook a little longer didn’t seem like a bad idea.

Yeah, the preview has already launched I believe.

Yep, I’ve been playing it. Went ahead and bought it, since it seems it’s at a discount to buy in “pre-release” status. I’m still going through the training, pretty slow but I fit in missions between other stuff I’m doing. The combat reminds me a lot of X-Wing but seems a little slower paced than that game, at least from what I remember. I’ve hit a bit of a block playing the Invasion tutorial, where they throw waves of enemies at you. I got up to the last enemy, a large ship, but it hyperspaced in right in front of me and I slammed into it, lost the mission. Unfortunately that reminds me a lot of X-Wing too.

Since 5 million is still a good while away I’m kinda considering picking up an adder at the moment, since it sounds like it does everything a little better than the sidewinder and is another waffling middle of the road ship. I’m just not sure which would be the better use of my money until I get into vulture-range, picking up a mostly stock adder or trying to bling out and upgrade my sidewinder. A bit over 300k credits now though.

The Adder is a decent first combat ship. It’s what I got my first kill in. The Viper, your next.step should you want combat, is freaking fun to fly, but always needs more power. Or you could what I did and skip the Viper at first and go right for the Cobra, which is likely my favorite ship in the game (despite the lethal killing machine the Vulture ends up being, its a biiiiit less fun to fly than the Cobra for me).

Also, don’t underestimate the eagle: it’s a fun little boat that’s miles above the sidewinder in capability. My route was eagle->viper->vulture, trying out the adder and the cobra for brief intervals. The cobra vs viper is an interesting comparison, and though I loved the viper, i think the cobra is a better bet for you - it just has more directions it can go in, and also a nice amount of storage for pilfered loot :)

It’s hard to estimate a fighter made of balsa wood. ;)

I did end up grabbing a cobra. Have a couple gimballed pulse lasers and a couple gimballed chainguns. Killed 3 random crappy bounties with 0 hull damage or issue, but then I tried a harmless difficulty kill mission and it was 3 ships at once. And despite me getting the drop on them and firing first, by the time my initial salvo was exhausted I hadn’t knocked my target’s shields down and my hull was down to 60%. Ran away and the repair bill was greater than the 3 bounties I picked up earlier.

Go with an Eagle. Though it can’t take sustained fire, if flies so nimbly that you should never be taking sustained fire. If you can get good with a beam laser you can strip shields away relatively quickly and then use gimbaled multi-cannons to finish things off. Plus it’s cheap to insure, maintain and to repurchase should the worst happen.

People seem to overlook the eagle, but if you are going for combat it’s the best early game option. I stayed with my eagle until I had the cash to get a A/B class Viper. Once I had the viper I still missed the maneuverability and the overhead visibility of the Eagle.

After some more banging around things were getting desperate. Was under the rebuy price of my ship briefly. Finally met up with my pals and they told me about going to resource nodes and hunting for bounties in there. Managed to rack up 150k from doing that, which mostly ended up being by myself once my friends were overcome with bloodlust at the sight of players talking about how new they were in the area chat.

I may have made 150k off bounties, but one of my friends ended the evening with a 270k bounty on his head after gunning down 5-8ish players and a cop or two.

I can see the complaints about the lack of content, and despite having some amazing sound otherwise I’m surprised the only voices you hear are inside space stations, but the basic pieces are handled so well in Elite I’m really enjoying it. Reminds me of playing Privateer more than a bigger sandbox like an X game or fully patched up Hardwar. The end goal isn’t starting a shop or chain of space stations, the end goal is just getting a badass ship and doing largely the same things you were doing before only a hell of a lot faster and easier. Also doesn’t help that Elite doesn’t explain anything at all beyond the most basic “LMB fires your guns. You did it! You’re ready to play the game, go get 'em tiger!” information in the tutorials. I do start to see more depth the more I play and see how things work in practice, but it’s the same one-ship scope.

Man, I really need to get back to this game again. I don’t think I have fired it up since the vulture came out and some of the best fun I had the past year was buzzing around a combat zone with krazykrok while in voice chat. Do they have in game voice chat working yet for groups or the wings? I still haven’t been on since the wings were implemented. I need to do some catching up :).

I also tried out the Eagle for a bit and really enjoyed it on the way to a Viper. It is true it is made of paper, but it did seem to help me learn to be a bit of a better pilot and learn how to avoid taking damage instead of just bulling through encounters.

Yeah, wings have voice chat.

I managed to get back to the big enemy at the end of the Invasion training and didn’t slam into it at least, though I still didn’t last much longer than if I had. That thing is much tougher and has much more punch than I do - I saved some missiles going into it but barely dented its shields before it took me out. Am I right in assuming that lasers are good for taking down shields, then save missiles for damaging the actual ship beneath? Also, how do you take on the larger ships that can apparently attack you from any angle, doesn’t seem like you can get behind it and plink it to death as best I can tell. Jeez, if this is just the tutorial I may be in for a rough time.

Mumble still available, I need to get back in here as well

Good deal! Thanks for the update.

Yessir.

You can target individual systems, and if I remember correctly you can target their power generator (or whatever it is called) and destroying that will cripple/destroy the ship. But even going up a larger ship, taking out the shields with your lasers and then hitting it with missiles should do the trick. I remember failing that mission the first couple times I tried it, but then everything just clicked.

If I’m remembering correctly it has escorts, and you have wingmen? Take the escorts out first, and then you’ll have a much easier time with the large ship. If my memory is muddled, then blame the six months it has been since I last played that mission.

does anyone know how to resolve the black screen on startup (after choosing play in the launcher) problem? it sits for like 5 minutes before the developer logo and music load.

Takes 1.5-2 minutes before the Frontier logo appears.

Can you get into the game after that?

yeah. seems to be a longtime problem based on the 100+ page thread on the dev forums. :/
