found the source of my elite: dangerous slow startup/black screen problem. it takes way longer with my extra 10 external usb 3.0 drive enclosures plugged in. for some reason it has to enumerate them or something. nothing plugged in, the logo comes on right away.

Glad you found the problem!

So I spent like 9 hours with this yesterday. RES’, crime sweeps and conflict zones mosty to help fortify and expand some of our systems. So. Fun. I’m seeing Power Play is now another way to point you to adventures, and because of it, I’m gonna try interdicting ships for the first time, those of a rival power. Can’t wait!

Got up to 2 million. Prepped my cobra for some sailing the seven seas. Was originally going to start pirating tonight, but my pirate-pal was dicking with Windows 10 which apparently didn’t like Elite, so that’ll have to wait. Really looking forward to messing with it though. The plan is he’ll have the interdictor and a pure combat ship, while I’ll be light support and have a (relatively) large cargo hold of 40 and some cargo scooping limpets to pick up all the booty easily.

On the bright side, my upgraded cobra is handling well. Can take 3 ships at a time in a high RES with minimal hull damage now, and what hull damage I do take is lessened because I reinforced that too, and if things go south I move faster than ever. Not sure I’ll ever do space trucking though. The occasional smuggling mission is alright, but the bit of space trucking I tried just bored me to tears. Might’ve been roughly the some credits per hour as RES pirate killing but man oh man it was dull. Would have to be wildly more profitable to get me to want to spend more time on that. Although honestly I don’t suspect our piracy runs are gonna be all that profitable either, but it’ll be a change of pace and kinda fun. Especially if we grab a player or two.

So after being frustrated with KB and mouse on PC I gave it a shot on X1 this weekend. Completely baffled by the controls and the early stage seems to not be real good and easing new players in. I have zero clue how to yaw this thing and the bumpers to accelerate in z axis makes my head hurt.

You don’t particularly want to yaw anyway, other than for fine aim control, and occasionally for landing manoeuvres.

Still haven’t really been able to try piracy. Buddy is having constant issues with Elite in Windows 10, and then just as he was interdicting a player in a class 7 with a hold full of rares my internet crapped out and the guy escaped.

Hours spent and absolutely nothing accomplished other than rubbing a space-penis in my space-face. NSFBR

Some day we won’t have issues and it’ll be great. Some day.

I hate games where you can feel “nothing accomplished” by playing - thats the one thing MMO’s really destroyed. The game should be fun to play in itself, and not for some goal or reward you need before having had a good time.

To be fair the nothing accomplished was mainly because we were both having issues, then most of the functional time was spent meeting up at a system with a rare commodity, then buzzing around looking for targets. Technically I ranked up on the Empire as I was waiting for him to straighten some of his stuff out, upgraded my FSD, and made maybe 200k from a bounty and some light smuggling. That’s just piddly given the amount of time spent playing this evening.

Ugh, I guess I’m not upgrading to Windows 10 anytime soon if ED has a problem with it.

I’ve totally loved playing this game and getting “nothing accomplished.” What wins me over is the feel if being in my own spaceship for a while. I could be just flying around turning in bounty vouchers, for example, and just the flying is fun.

I finally caved & got this game. Spent 3 hours last night watching videos, playing the tutorials and massive key bindings.

Then today I found thisthread on their forums. I sense a repeat in the coming days as I rebind my keys & go through the tutorials again.

I’m leaning towards this mapping:

I’ve read with interest this thread & felt it was time to jump in, but after 150 pages, I’m afraid I don’t have the energy to peruse them all. If you could point to one or two replies here that really helped you as a beginner, that’d be really helpful.

Welcome Tman! There are a bunch of helpful links on the first page of the thread!

Some might be outdated, but I’m sure the manuals and stuff still apply. Read those and do the training until you feel comfortable with basic landing, taking off and combat. Then, basically, find out what you want to do.

Friend me and join my private group, both under Veloxi, so you’re only playing with good people. Unless you have an incredibly high asshole tolerance, then open is for you my friend. :)

Again, welcome, and don’t hesitate to ask questions! Good luck and safe flying!

I’m tempted to double dip and get it for Xbox One as well. I’d love to play it on the couch.

But I’m just so set in my ways on how to play Space Sims (HOKAS!) that I might not take to using a controller. It’s still tempting to try though. And the idea of throwing more money at this game appeals to me.

plus you get to test out CQC first (on Xbox), if that is your thing.

THAT IS NOT A THING!

;)

Well, I wasted 2 hours last night trying to get that keybinding to work and it just doesn’t work. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong or if the file has some problems in it. I posted on the frontier forums, but that thread doesn’t seem much action lately.

In case I’m not being stupid, let me review what I’m trying to do, and tell me if I’m doing anything wrong.

(from memory, so might have the path wrong)
\users man\appdata\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings\

I edit custom.binds, delete the entire contents and paste the information from the binds file I want
I save it
I load up elite and go into options -> controls and select custom and apply.

It’s like it’s not even recognizing it b/c even the most basic button is from the default for the thrustmaster hotas…

What a waste of an evening. Nothing worked.

Huh, I’ve never done a binding that way before. You might have better luck doing it from within the game itself. I’ve always done my custom binding from there and, while it takes a while to do, it’s never given me any problems since. I’m sorry you lost an evening though.

Have you tried renaming the custom binds file? Supposedly anything in that folder shows up in the list.

THAT is where 1 hour of that 2 wasted hours was spent. It wasn’t until finally figured out my problem - I was trying to use a button modifier where you need two buttons pressed and that same button was mapped later on in the file to the boost. Once I figured out that and removed boost, it was time to call it a night. I’ll be doing this again this evening because I really want to start the game with the mappings close to what I would like.

I can tell you that I am already sick of the “loading shaders” screen…man that takes a while.

Hopefully tonight I can make more progress and complete the bindings & redo the training tutorials with the new bindings and then jump in game this weekend.

BTW - I accidentally hit the flight assist off and I was surprised at how twitchy the controls were - to the point that I simply had no control. I can appreciate the younger, twitchier generation’s ability to fly unassisted (I always turned off auto-leveling in Descent), but Elite takes it to another level entirely and I’m wondering if it’s something you get used to - or for us 50 year old generation, is keeping it turned on the preferable way to go?

I can’t do flight assist off either. I basically use vertical and lateral thrusters ALL THE TIME to achieve basically the same effect without flying out of control. ;) Those that can wrap their brain around FA off, more power to 'em.
