That’s fucked. Thanks for the warning! Won’t be mistaking that mistake! At least you get to buy the clipper Brian!

Yeah, I thought they were like bounty vouchers, and you held onto 'em until you either turned 'em in or blew up. Wrooooooong.

Haven’t played for a while, and got back into it the last few days thanks to my new 3440x1440 monitor (OH MY GOD SO BEAUTIFUL). I’m impressed by the performance improvements. Things like the delays and stutters in open play when going into or out of supercruise seem to be gone. The station interiors no longer obviously load just prior to you entering the mail slot. Landing pad queues seem to be smoothed out a bit, even in the starting systems. It all feels pretty slick.

Starter missions are also more profitable, which is nice. I cleared my old save, and there wasn’t much grinding required to get me into an adder. But really, this game is rarely a grind for me. The moment-to-moment stuff, probably boring for lots of folks, captivates me. I like that supercruise requires you to pay a bit of attention. I like studying the orbit lines and getting a sense of the scale of a system. Watching sunrise over a gas giant never, ever gets old. I just love the slightly-fiddly-but-not-really-challenging mechanics of docking and undocking. I get a little thrill as a find a decent paying mission. I like flicking through the upgrades and making decisions about where to spend my cash.

So, I recognize and appreciate the deficiencies of gameplay, and the issues with the meta-universe narrative and economy stuff – but just have a hard time caring because it’s a game that feels like it was made for me. I’ll probably never get into powerplay (and by the sound of things it’s not really for me). I’ll probably never max out any rankings. Heck, after a few months I’ll probably clear my save again just because I feel like starting fresh. I mostly treat it as a relaxing, semi-casual, immersive ‘space trucker’ sim. At some point I’ll give combat and bounty hunting a dedicated spin and see how awful I am at it.

On a related note, can an adder be equipped as a decent explorer? Haven’t really done too much of that and I was thinking of picking a direction and just heading off. I’ve never really been out of the core systems. I may need to wait a bit longer and get a ship with a better jump range.

The adder’s not bad. For a great jump range, check out the hauler, actually. The only downside to using those two ships for exploration is the cockpit view, which is focused forward, and when exploring, there always seems to be a reason to try to crane your view out of a side window. I found the cobra to be a great all-rounder, and did a lot of early exploring in it. That said, we now have the diamondback scout for about the same price as the cobra which has an excellent cockpit view, so long as you don’t mind flying in a fishbowl.

The Adder can pretty easily be fit out as an explorer, for not all that much money, e.g. http://coriolis.io/outfit/adder/03D3E3A1E2C3A3C27171702-0m442o2i2f.Iw1+kA==.IwBj4jRI

I’m planning on doing that myself, although my Adder is presently in service as a light trader.

Thanks! That Coriolis thing is cool as heck. Looks like I have a bit more saving to do to properly trick out my Adder for exploration.

You can omit the Advanced Discovery Scanner in place of an Intermediate Discovery Scanner (savings of about a million), and a few other things can be downrated. All I’d really say to worry about is a class-A fuel scoop, and a better drive if you’re planning on going somewhere specific.

Just a note on the above adder fittings, for a few pennies more ™, you can fit a 2A power plant instead of the 3D, which will get you a smidge more jump range because of the smaller mass, a touch more juice so you won’t risk power issues, and much better thermal efficiency, so that when you’re fuel scooping, your heat levels won’t climb quite as fast.

Good to know—I 1) never remember to try lower-class powerplants, and 2) just downgraded that one from a fancier spec, so thanks for the tip.

The new CQC maps are being shown in 3 minutes.

Here’s the preview of the new Condor from the CQC twitch stream. It’s been in-game as AI for a while, though this version looks to be nicely refined.

Looks like a really cool little fighter. Hopefully someday it’ll be flyable in the main game, perhaps carried around by a larger ship?

Looks super squishy, much like the existing version.

Yeah, no doubt, but with a good pilot – who knows. It’s apparently the most maneuverable ship in the game.

For role-playing purposes, it’d be cool to have one that you can dock to a larger ship (i.e. the Panther Clipper). Maybe serve as a quick way to buzz around stations in a single system picking up missions, or just test your luck in a conflict zone.

A nicely armed captain’s yacht, basically.

Picked up the courier. Even though I was originally just going to buy it stock and then mothball it I got carried away and fitted it like so: http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_courier/04A3A3A1C3A2C3C1b1b2a0404040m40592o6b0124.Iw18UA==.MwBhwJjEEY+qIAsTlA==

Definitely far worse than my vulture for combat. Tried it out a bit. Much less agile, and even though it puts out more damage on paper in reality it takes a lot longer to kill things. The shields were impressively thick as I took on a clipper with a sidewinder escort and my shields never went down, but A: I used my shield cell bank entirely during the fight, B: Due to lack of agility and because AI clippers seem to do the best job of keeping fire focused on you I was being hit almost the entire time, and C: The fight took a hell of a lot longer than it would have in the vulture, which also wouldn’t have lost shields due to the fact that it would kill everything before it became an issue.

May end up gutting it and keeping it sitting in a hangar until I ever feel the urge to mess with it again, but I don’t think I’ll play with it much at the moment. When I pick up the clipper I’m most likely going to fit it in to a trading vessel since it can hold a bit more cargo than a type-7 and give that a try for a while, which absolutely would be a different use than my vulture. When I’ve got more spacebux then I’ll probably try combat fitting it.

Question: Does the config from the launcher version (video settings, control setup) carry over to a fresh install of the Steam version?

So I think I’m done with PowerPlay for a while due the the disappearing voucher thing, but I wanna try ranking well for the Empire. Where can I go from Lavigny-Duval territory to get Empire missions? Will Kamadhenu – her headquarters – be sufficient?

I’m kind of at a loss otherwise. RESes seem really nerfed of late, as they’re not anywhere near as fun or profitable as they used to be, so I figure I’ll go back to missions for a while.

It’s a die roll. I can go into a medium RES and end up with 6 “fingerling” kills for like a grand total of $19K, or roll in to one and end up with 3 “lunker” kills and $292K. Forget it, Jake, it’s ED RNG.

But it seems to be the case with EVERY RES I go into, and I’ve been trying to find only high intensity ones. Very frustrating.

Get in and out of RES until you come into one with clippers and pythons

Yeah, I guess I could try that. Oddly I had better hunting at a nav beacon yesterday, though it was a system in turmoil so that might’ve helped.
