Ahh…Ahhhhhh!

i can only hope that you guys were keeping the tissues close by

/me packs extra pair of undies for gamescom trip tomorrow :)

And you know where Cologne is? On a planet!

And that planet is in space.

You know something else about Cologne? It has people walking around on bridges!

That Cobra would make a cool mancave.

Hopefully if they suddenly spring planetary landings on everyone it doesn’t require a new type of scanner if you do it while exploring. I’m about a week away from civilized space at the moment, making a circuitous trip to the galactic core and back. Probably another week or two of travel at least, at my current laid back “Play an hour every day or two while watching Netflix” pace.

The bright side, found a few undiscovered neutron stars and earthlikes and such this far away.
The downside, still haven’t found an undiscovered black hole. But I will. SO HELP ME I WILL.

Planetary landings confirmed. Moon buggy!

“Elite Dangerous: Horizons launches this Holiday. The first expansion, Planetary Landings introduces players to planet surfaces and the first all-new Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV) the ‘Scarab’. Scanning airless planets and moons brings new gameplay as players detect signals, crashed ships, mineral deposits, outposts and fortresses.”

Wow - so they are really going the Star Citizen way, and make a completely new game inside the game? Thats pretty cool, since I have a much higher opinion of Frontiers chance of success, than SC’s.

Yeah. Looks like we’ll be landing on moons by Christmas, and knocking about in a super cool rover. An all new “loot and crafting system” is coming in Q1 2016. It looks like the buy in is 40 euros (current players get a 10 discount plus a custom Cobra Mark IV) for what basically amounts to a season pass with regular updates.

I heart David Braben.

Off to bed. Got my geek on and stayed up late for the announcement.

Words from David Braben with more info here.

“Beginning”? So when it comes out you won’t even be able to land on all planets?

I’m looking across a number of forums and people do not seem happy with the pricing, at all. Looks like re-enacting Guild Wars 2 expansion thing.

game + expansion 50 euros, expansion only 40 euros.

Could as well buy the game new and have two pilots…

I understand they consider this as a yearly funding to fuel ongoing development, but $50 for an expansion that is going to be mostly procedural empty space isn’t going to be hugely appealing for a big public.

Elite Dangerous: Horizons is a full season of content extending into 2016, introducing new features and gameplay in each major expansion.
Support will continue for Elite Dangerous even outside of Elite Dangerous: Horizons

These two aren’t also very clear. They make it sound the paid expansion is required for “full season of content” divided into “major expansions”. That’s the same as the current patches.

So, in order to have the updates that currently require only the base game you’ll have to have access to the paid expansion too?

Or, one could say they are going the Frontier: Elite II way. From what I understand Star Citizen is not doing this; it will have smaller room-like maps (sometimes multiple connected maps per planet) as cities/landing hubs on planets, and it might have small procedurally generated maps for uninhabited planets later on. The major difference in design between the two games is pretty much handcrafted content vs. procedural content for now. You will not land anywhere on a planet in Star Citizen but start an autolanding sequence in orbit and the game will load the starport map while it shows a transition sequence.

Frontier has been looking to do planetary landings since the Kickstarter, and even had packages with lifetime expansion packs. I imagine the game’s commercial success meant they could get into it this year rather than the next or something.

Yeah, I have one of those lifetime expansion packs :-)

I do think Frontier are more about quality as well, but that could just be my bias showing. I have a very good feeling about this. I’m actually thinking an expanded Mako from Mass Effect, which I enjoyed immensely.

Finally, and if not landing on all planets, a start to adding stuff we already have in Frontier and FFE. I can start playing 'soon’™ :D

The pricing does seem weird and i see a lot of (understandable) confusion about that part on the Elite forums, we will probably get some more detailed info soon. like Razgon i’m a lifetime expansion pass holder (from the Kickstarter), and very specifically i’ve been holding off playing ED until it had planet landings (because the previous Elite games had that already and they are part of my required Elite experience now), and will wait some more to see how it goes and gets fleshed out. I’m a very patient kinda guy when needs be (and i’ve needed it for ED!).

Pretty excited for this, also its good to know I am not the only one who got a lifetime pass. :-)

They are still selling them, at 4x the price now.

It’s pretty cool that buying the expansion will get existing owners the Cobra Mark IV. I don’t have enough money in the game itself to buy the Cobra yet. The Cobra Mark IV sounds even better!

Yep I got one too, way back in beta. Looks like it’s starting to pay off!
