Reading more into it I can confirm that the paid expansion STOPS content updates for current users.

Basically they consider the purchase of the base game as a “season 1” of content patches, that stop this December. So if you want more content patches you need to buy the “expansion season” that goes with it.

When this goes public/more obvious it is going to give them a HUGE negative backlash only comparable to when they announced offline mode was scrapped. They are really doing their best to piss off customers (at least those not super-dedicated).

so that means no more ‘Wings’, ‘Power Play’ or ‘CQC’(whatever it is called) for the base game? That is not that big a deal is it as those pretty much sucked, or did not add positives to the general game?

Or are you saying all patches and bug fix updates are also stopped? That would suck, and quite rightly annoy pretty much everyone.

Maybe they will then offer the base game with offline mode? Since future patches will be for Season 2? I’d still like to play this offline.

Yeah, they really had a problem surviving that online only thing, didn’t they.

Go away Hrose, we don’t need your manufactured outrage or whatever.

I wonder if us Lifers are going to get into that Horizons beta that’s on sale for an extra $15…

By the way- called it!

No, patches and bugfix continue. Content patches stop. The fact that they sucked or were too little doesn’t help the fact that now they are cut down completely.

That said, it’s baffling how Star Citzen and Elite are opposite. It’s like a curse that won’t let us have good spaceship simulators.

On one hand you have Star Citzen and its complete technical incompetence and lack of direction, turning it in the greatest example of vaporware. Yet it’s able to find a huge amount of funding. On the other hand you have Elite, that is technically excellent, a really solid foundation to start building on. And yet they are essentially dooming the project through terrible business choices.

As if the announce of that damned rollercoaster tycoon game wasn’t enough? Who do you think is going to pay when that game tanks? There’s a reason why Braben stopped being relevant for a decade, he made a great game, but he can’t run a business.

If only we could magically dump Star Citzen money on Elite everything would be perfect.

Not all content:

No - some development will apply to all versions of the game and so will be available to all owners. This will typically apply to features that apply to everyone in game. Other features and content will be for Elite Dangerous: Horizons owners only.

Michael

Though it’s not very clear right now what exactly those will be.

Were it not for the Mako’s over-sensitive steering, those bits of ME were actually quite fun. I was sad when they ditched it in ME2, instead of making it better.

No, thank you. Those who want to play Elite already get to enjoy it and are welcome to keep funding it. I’m funding SC as well and am looking forward to what that one will bring. They aren’t the same game and shouldn’t be.

Hey how cool would it be if you could land on a planet, explore and then drive your rover around a Roller Coaster Theme park… :-J

Is it weird that this announcement has made me less interested in the game? I’ve been following the thread for a while and it all looks great, but my limit was $30 (which I was hoping for in the Steam Holiday Sale) because I honestly don’t know that I’ll have the time to commit to overcoming the learning curve and then putting meaningful time in after that. It now sounds like we’re getting yearly expansions/season passes/whatever you want to call them, and while this was maybe always the plan and I overlooked it, it’s less likely I can get the full experience at a price I’m happy with now.

As someone who has no ties to the Elite franchise outside of Dangerous I have to say I’m a little disappointed with this announcement. I’ve been unable to really stay invested in Elite since it’s release mostly due to the lack of content complaints that have been listed in other places in this thread. I really, really want to love this game but my gaming time is limited and I don’t think Elite is really suited to small-chunk gaming in the same way Heroes of the Storm is (or even Witcher 3 where i can sit down for 30 minutes and still have a good time completing a quest or two). With that said this “big announcement” seems both confusing and somewhat disappointing. Now I’m no doomsaying HRose here and I think Frontier will be just fine but what are people really getting excited about here?

Planetary landings? Yeah on asteroids only (at least at first and who knows how long that will be). I’m sure this will be interesting the first few times but I think it won’t take long for every rocky, airless “world” (i.e. asteroids) to look pretty much the same and how much wonder and excitement am i going to get flying over a big rock? And then I can get out of my ship and drive around on said rock? Doing what? Fighting something, maybe? Or gathering minerals (because that’s been such a hit in space)? And I have to pay basically the price of the full game to get access to this and keep paying to get access to future updates?

Maybe this is a great addition for those of you with nostalgic feelings for this series but for me (and i suspect others like me who are evaluating this game on it’s merits alone) this feels like forking over a lot of money for not much return. Maybe someone here can change my mind because again I really want to love this game, space-sims were my favorite genre growing up and I really thought this would be my dream game but it just hasn’t won me over so far.

Hi Locker, likewise I’m a little concerned about the sudden mention of “Season Pass” out of nowhere. Even though I’m a kickstarter backer and should get these as part of the kickstarter deal, season passes leave me cold.
I personally would rather they finished the core game and added some meaningful content into the space simulator before faffing with planetary landings and moon buggies. Unfortunately though planetary landing seems to be a big driver for them.
I’ve spent well over 1000 hours in the game since beta1 so have got my money’s worth out of it. Although since upgrading to the steam version a few months back I’ve only logged 30 odd hours, the PowerPlay crap to me was a step in the wrong direction and even now I shudder with rage thinking about it.
I can honestly say that since launch the game to me has become less and less interesting as all the exploration and fun elements (including Thargoids) just never seem to materialise, and looking forward probably won’t for a long time to come if ever.
However for $30 the base Elite Dangerous game is quite good value for money if you’re new to it, and come in with fresh eyes.

Man, that lifetime pass is super tempting…

It was way more tempting when it was $50 last summer. :p

I’m glad I sprung for the lifetime pass. Watching the Twitch stream now. They said that you will engage an Orbital Cruise mode (to transition instances no doubt) and then be able to fly down to the surface from there.

Also, this page suggests there’ll be a 1.5 update later in the year (after the CQC 1.4 in September) which will focus on ships and dump a load of them into the game prior to the first Horizons release.

Any announcement of US pricing for the new expansion/season?

$59.99 in the store.

so some great info in this thread re what is and what is not planned re content update for the core game vs for the expansions etc:

From the (not well organised) remarks from Frontier bods (David, Sandro and Michael) it looks like core development will continue, improvements and patches/updates etc, but specific stuff for the expansions will (off course) be reliant on having those expansions. Sounds like a lot of work really!

Will we ever get passengers to make the Orca worth something? Will the respective law level of a system ever really make sense in relation to the threat level you face when entering it? Will interdictions ever reflect where in space you are (more in dangerous populous systems, less far out in deep uncolonised space)? etc etc. I’m not sure we have those exact answers yet, but for sure there will be no more power play/wings/frag fest stuff for the base Elite Dangerous game, and maybe that is a good thing that will (finally) allow Frontier to focus on all the core gameplay stuff that is still missing/broken/in need of improving? fingers crossed.

I’m just happy i may actually be able to start playing the game soon :) Sorry FFED3D+AndyJ mod, your time may be up?
