Having nothing else to do (waiting for Fallout 4), I just sold my A-Vulture recently, and swapped to a surveyor DBS. Amazing going from ~13LY jump range (which admittedly is pretty good for a Vulture!) to ~30LY. Then I pointed the nose of my new DBS toward the Coal Sack and just went.
Beautiful. I love exploring. bene grinding some trades the past week. Decent money but bit bored of it by now.

I should re-read those. Was a huge niven fan in my teens. … on the gripping hand… :D
Niven is at his best when he’s writing with Pournelle, I think. Niven helps Pournelle write non-robot characters, Pournelle keeps Niven from going too far off the rails with weird sex-with-aliens stuff.
The less said about the sequel the better though, right?
I got it wrong and assumed he was referring to Peter F Hamiltons “motiles” (Pandoras Star etc). Also worth a read! :)
At least for his Novels. His short stories are fantastic.

Where is a good place to try out mining in the area? I tried mining in the first few weeks when Elite: Dangerous went live, but hear it is more advanced now with drones that pick up materials for you and perhaps other improvements and wanted to try it out now that I have the cash to kit out another ship and keep my combat builds intact.
Also, if anyone has a decent mining setup that they like and willing to link, that would be great. Perhaps a Cobra MKIII or Asp, although I am not sure I could fully fit the Asp yet.

I have only done mining in a python, but it is an excellent ship to mine with. Any ship can do, but you really want one with:

[li]2 medium hardpoints for mining lasers
[/li][li]1 internal slot for a refinery (preferably one with 9 collection bins)
[/li][li]1 internal slot for a collector limpet controller (the better the rating, the longer the limpets will live)
[/li][li]1 internal slot for a prospector limpet controller (this one is optional, but mining a rock that’s been tagged with a prospector will get you more chunks you can mine off of it, so when you find something good, it’s great, but otherwise you can find out what’s in a rock just by knocking off a few chunks with your mining lasers)

Fill the rest of your internal slots with cargo space, and don’t forget before undocking to buy limpets from your station’s rearming menu (should you have one).
I built a basic mining asp in coriolis if you want a look. Came to around 15M CR.
As for where to mine near Orcus, I have no idea. Ideally you’re looking for planets/dwarfs with metallic rings and featuring pristine reserves, as that is where you will find plenty of platinum, palladium, osmium and painite. Pristine reserves are rare in the bubble, and you will generally need to scan systems with a detailed system scanner to find them. That said, there’s a thread on the Frontier forums that keeps track of such things.

Hmm, looks like I can switch out the 5A Frame Shift Drive to a 5D and get the price down to 10.2 mil, which I could afford now. I ran a fit on a Cobra, but the cargo space would have been much much less so I may as well go for an Asp.
