This group that calls themselves SDC has taken to killing other players in the game, regardless of their condition, experience, or value. They hunt charity streamers, PvE players, and anyone that’s not in their outfit. They’ve even joined a PvE group just to turn on its members and kill them from within.
Frontier gave them a warning about harassment, but declined to take action. SDC responded by holding their own charity stream.
On 19th March SDC partnered with another piracy-focused group called The Code to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK in an operation it called “Arseholes for Arseholes”. SDC, led by co-founder CMDR Sundae, and The Code, led by CMDR Majinvash, destroyed Elite Dangerous newcomers in the game’s starter area. With each kill real world money was donated.
Some of the playerbase feel that SDC’s shenanigans are actually content for the game and help spice up the environment EVE Online style.
It’s an online space sim… the primary “action” in these games is combat. So I don’t really see the problem.
If it’s being too bothersome for the players it’s more a sign of the game not being well designed (ie, make pvp more risky, or make pvp and pve separate).
Yeah, it’s fine by me. I mean, I play solo anyway, so of course it is, but even in principle I don’t understand the point of making this an online game and then actively preventing people from being pirates.

Players already have the option of logging into a completely solo world as well as a private world, so there are already tools to handle anti-social players/groups.
The only downside of leaving that group alone is potentially discouraging some players from continuing to play, but that’s par for the course for online games.
It’s not that hard to understand. Plenty of people enjoy playing MMOs in co-op PVE, adventuring with other humans in the same world but without them being able to grief you.
This is the same thing, except there are no tools to support it in E:D hence the ‘gentleman’s agreement’ PVE-only groups. The fact that Mobius is the biggest group around (20,000 members) indicates that it’s not a niche desire. SDC are a bunch of idiots trying to spoil other people’s fun.
I don’t know if this is still a thing but when the SDC people infiltrated Mobius a bunch of people decided to undermine SDC’s player faction. It was a pretty cool response, I thought.
And I mostly play in Mobius when I play–I get enough grief from NPCs–don’t need players doing so.
Pretty nice newsletter this week, with lots of good stuff.
- New Controller voice chatter for docking/undocking procedures
- Missiles and Torpedoes are finally getting buffed
- Community goals will now show up on the maps
- Ice Mining
- Previews of the new mission UI
- Some cool pics of some of the handcrafted (?) bases where you will find engineers
The engineers 2.1 update is in general looking really good. Just a ton of minor enhancements that will improve the day-to-day stuff (like bookmarks on the galaxy map - finally!)
Couple of pics of engineer planetary bases:
Word is from one of the recent livestreams that the 2.1 Engineers beta should go live some time this Thursday, May 5th.
I’ve been taking a bit of a breather from the game waiting for the changes 2.1 has promised (and drowning in Dark Souls 3, to be honest), but I’m looking forward to it and hoping that there’s an engineer somewhere out there that can make some improvements to the various exploration modules. Better jump range should be obvious, but maybe something to reduce scanning time or increase the distance from which you can scan a body would be cool, and trying these out might give me the impetus to finish off my exploration rank.
I daren’t ask on the official forum for fear of a dogpiling, but is there any news on new ships in 2.1 at all?
If there are, they’ve been very quiet about it. I honestly don’t expect any new ships in the near future. (Would love to be proven wrong, mind.) Hopefully, some of the mods you can make will make older ships feel new and fresh again.
So the 2.1 beta is indeed imminent. A beta-discussions forum has been added to the Frontier forums, and the 2.1 changelog has been posted.
Eurogamer sez that 2.1 is scheduled to go live for everyone else next week, May 26th specifically (in addition to Horizons getting an Xbox One release date the week after).
No new ships, but a new layer of gameplay and some pretty darn impressive audio improvements. Looking forward to it.
Yeah, the traffic control audio alone makes me giddy.
This may be a dumb question but i just bought a Rift so I’d like to try it out with Elite. Since I already own this do i need to do anything special in-game to get it to work with the Rift? Since I’m not launching from the Rift store will it automatically recognize the Rift or do i need to mess with settings?

Absolutely no idea. My Rift DK2 required a small amount of futzing with resolutions and render mode, and I’d expect the same for the consumer version. In the scheme of things though, getting Elite to play on my Rift was far easier than most other titles.
Not really. These days there’s one option for “3D”, and you set it to “HMD (speakers)” or “HMD (headphones)”. I think you do need to be running the Oculus store though. Alternatively, you can get a free key from Frontier for the Oculus store.
What you will probably need to mess about with is changing graphics settings to get adequate performance, dependant on your hardware.
For whatever reason I could not get Elite to work unless it ran through Steams VR rather than Oculus direct. ANyway if you run into trouble you might want to try that.
Regardless it is the best VR experience I have played. No contest. Enjoy :)
So what are you guys flying these days (if at all)? I have parked the python in favour of a Federal Assault Ship. That thing is ugly like an A10 and kicks like one too. Bi-weave shields and a good doloping of reinforced bulkheads and hull reinforcements. Its awesome. Four beams, two medium, two large on fixed mounts. Zaaaaaaap zap zap die.
