Ok so I’m slowly getting back into this after a long hiatus (and finally getting my Rift issues sorted out, and I agree with @schurem this game is fantastic in VR) and apparently the last ship I bought was a Keelback(?), I’m guessing for the excellent cockpit views. However I’ve taken it out a few times and been interdicted and just get my ass handed to me, my shields and hull just melt like butter. So I’ve got about 5 mil in the bank, I think I used to have a Viper (or a Vulture maybe I get them confused) should I try and go back to that if I want to focus mainly on combat and some cargo runs or should I keep the Keelback and maybe upgrade? I guess what’s the best all-arounder in ships these days?

Fuck the keelback. It sucks.
Get an Asp Agape. That has the same awesome cockpit view. Run rares with it until you have a 100 or so in the bank. Or just whack bounties in a vulture (which i find boring AF). Once you get a 100 or so, upgrade to python. Its free and open source. Its the greatest!
By the way, this thread might be huge and cumbersome by now, but thankfully it also has a lot of great information from some very helpful players. Just go to the original post at the top and scroll down a little. First Brian links to some official help stuff. Ignore that. Then he links to reddit and other stuff. Ignore that too. Then there is links to posts in this thread! Don’t ignore those. Some of those are fantastic. Like how to get started, how to do exploration, etc.
EDIT: Ah crap. Those links don’t work anymore now that we switched to Discourse. Damn it. Is there a way to make them work again?
@BrianRubin: Could you make the original post a Wiki so that I can edit it? I might be able to find all those posts over the next couple of days. I already found a couple. If I can edit the post, I can put the correct links in there.
(Don’t ask me how to make it a Wiki. I’ve never done it. I assume it must be a simple matter).

You god damn enthusiastic, helpful, patient, intelligent Elite fans. You and your forgiveness, your hope, your appreciation.
Ok, let’s face it. There are not many space sim games out there. I was venting because The FPS, open world action, RPG and Puzzle game guys are in their heyday. There are so many choices you get to pick from silly explosion happy trivial island game number #36 and urban combat game #947. So I heard about this Elite game that had it’s heyday in the 90s and they were back. What was I expecting? There are not many studios in this game. If Ubisoft and Rockstar would stop vomiting out Far Cry and Assassin Creed and GTA sequels I’d stop buying them. It’s just that they are SO GOOD at making things entertaining. And they improve incrementally, They understand the risk-reward feedback cycles and cinematic presentation and interweaving open world gameplay and narrative. I understand SPACE! Is a different thing but certainly there is some game designer, maybe Brian Rubin, that can design a better space geme than this. Brian, you wanna develop a space game? I’ll fund it. :)
As is, I now know I have to treat it more like ArmA than Battlefield. I had an ongoing love/hate (mostly love) relationship with Operation Flashpoint and the Armed Assault series for long time. I mean, I even created scenarios missions with custom triggered cutscenes and movies and voice overs in Arma 2. But sim games typically let you do all kinds of things, like edit scenarios, free play, etc. Heck, even ArmA had full campaign and scripted events and poorly paid voiceovers. And then let you ignore that and explore their universe.
But it’s one of the only games in town, so
I’ll reboot and lets see. The Sol system says I need a Sol pass to enter there. It’s also 10x my max jump distance away. How do I get to that motherfucker?
TO SPACE!
OK, the OP in this thread has been updated to reflect the real links to within this thread. I’d especially recommend checking them out, it’s good stuff:
Scharmer’s advice to new players, for example, was what I used to build up my ship right away to something more useful. Krazykrok’s guide to landing has several useful screenshots that are excellent in explaining the tower you’ll see as you land.
Exploring this thread again tonight really gave me the warm fuzzies. You guys are so helpful.

Keelback will be able to mount a hanger in the next update I believe. It still may not be “optimal” for anything, but it should at least be more interesting.

I’m a little lost still. How do build faction standing with a single
faction at a location? I thought the mission revamp was supposed to
make this easier? more intuitive? I feel like I have to take 1 or 2
missions at a time, then fly back and repeat. Is this by design or am I
missing something?

That is one way. Another is to find a station owned by that faction and cash in bounty vouchers there, or possibly easier if more time consuming, selling your exploration data. About 6M credits worth of exploration data should get you allied. Finally, selling commodities at the station owned by the faction you want will also see you get in their good graces. It’s based on profit made, I think, so mining can be a good way to do this, as commodities you mine are pure profit.
While I believe Frontier had hoped to release a new season each year, the delays getting the various features in Horizons ship-shape have pretty much made this impossible, IMHO, unless the following seasons are smaller and cheaper or Frontier greatly expands their development team. That said, I believe someone has said (possibly even Braben) that a season doesn’t have to be a year long. Certainly I have no expectation that Horizons will be done by Christmas.
I definitely had the same thought as HRose re Horizons and whether Frontier was going to try to get people to sign up for more content before the current season is finished, which I doubt would go over too well.
You are all making me want to play Elite again, i should buy a HOTAS first.
The newsletter this week said 2.2 would be launching in mid-October (which in FDEV PR-speak means it’s going into beta on that date, with release 2-3 weeks later). I think 2.2 will be our lot for this year. The pace of change in season 2 has been glacial.
On the subject of helpful stuff for new folks, this recent guide on Steam seems to be pretty good:

So every time I die, it doesn’t give me the option to rebuy what I lost. I start out with 1000CR. Is that too little to rebuy the starting craft? Every time I die I therefore have to erase my save and go through the whole process again of starting in the opening hanger on a base planet, doing the pre flight checklist, leaving the planet, etc. I’ve probably done that 10 times now.
I want to like this game but the game design choices they made are soooooo frustrating and terrible, it makes it hard. I can’t take out any bounties either, my shields are so weak the fight is over in 20 seconds.
How did you guys suffer through this to get to the other side? For a new player it’s maddening. All I want to do is fly around and explore, but the game makes that nearly impossible.
OK, I realize this question comes across as snarky but I am legitimately curious: why are you dying so much? Are you taking on everything that comes at you? Are you flying into things? Spontaneous combustion?
Don’t delete your save to restart. If you haven’t upgraded your starting sidewinder, you haven’t lost anything and the sums of money required to progress are trivial at the start.
From your starting station, just try to take some courier missions in the sidey to build up some cash and be able to upgrade it. The Sidewinder is a lot of fun when it’s A-rated, so just in that ship you’ll enjoy learning to fly and navigate the galaxy. If you want to explore a bit, try to work towards an Adder which will give you more options than the sidey.
Edit: You’re also nowhere near ready to take bounty hunting missions - if you want to try your hand at combat, go to a nav beacon and try to help any ongoing fights. Try to get the last shot even if you didn’t do the hard work. It’s a great way to get money early on.

Docking with stations, being attacked by enemies that pull me out of hyperspace, killed by a bounty target (is there any way to see how tough and enemy will be? I have no idea), ship damaged beyond my repair means by overheating somehow while waiting for a warp jump, the list goes on.
Edit: There are never any missions at the starting station. Often I get killed just flying to somewhere new to try and find a mission.

Sorry, I think maybe this game is just not my cup of tea. I won’t bother you guys anymore or ask what the deal is. For some reason you guys like it, to each his own. I see the potential in the game, I just can’t get past the opening.
Deleting it to free up hard drive room and moving on, should have read more reviews I guess. Caveat emptor. Sorry to bother you and thanks for trying to help!
