IIRC, and I haven’t done one in a while so my memory may be a bit spotty, but if you read the entire mission description when you take it from the bulletin board it should spell it out for you. I think what you need to do is once you get to the target system, fire off your discovery scanner. (If the system is inhabited, you can also drop down to the NAV beacon, target it and let your ship scan the data off of it.) Once you do, you’ll get a message telling you where in the system to go and, once you get there, fly around the body for a bit until a mission specific signal source appears. Drop into it and scoop up whatever it is you were sent for.
Sometimes, for whatever reason, you’ll be unable to grab all of them. In that case, fire up your FSD and go back to orbiting the body again, and eventually you’ll get another mission specific signal source.
You absolutely cannot turn in a partially completed mission. If you were sent out for two and only bring back one, it’s tough cookies I guess. Go back and do it right! :)
Thanks, I didn’t think to do the disco scanner bit but did drop into the Nav beacon. However, once there I didn’t look at the local contacts and actually select the floating thingy, which is probably why I’ve had no luck. Previously with this type of mission you’d just drop into some USSs and eventually pick up a black box or two–they didn’t have to be specific ones.

So the sale going on has me hovering over the ‘buy’ button, but I’m really struggling to get a reading on this game. Reviews seem all over the map.
For reference, I absolutely loved the idea of EVE but realized quickly that I couldn’t commit myself to the time commitment of being in a corp. It isn’t the time itself that is necessarily an issue, just the need for solid blocks of time that align with other people. Elite, on the other hand, seems to be multiplayer in essence only? No real concept of guilds/corps, and most people play solo anyway (without other players even around?). I’m having trouble telling if there is more to it than just Euro Trucker 2: Space Edition.
Also, this game seems to lend itself heavily to multi-monitor setups, VR, HOTAS systems, etc. At best, I’d be kb&m or ps4-style controller (logitech f310), and the closest I’ll get to VR is a “do-it-yourself” smartphone headtracker. Does this gimp the game completely?
Also… I’d probably only be doing the base game. Horizons may come at a later point, but not dropping the money for both out of the gate. Especially since I can’t even tell if this would be a long-term stay for me or not.

It’s fucking awesome, and way more to do than ever, it’s a no brainer , but I got two kids and struggle with time, but that’s the only downside, but it’s miles off being a life chewer like EVE

Well, the galaxy is a very big place, so unless you consciously wing up with people you’ll rarely see other hollow radar blips aka other players except for in/near current Community Goals or points of focused interest like Engineer bases (unless you play in Open, and even then you probably won’t see that many).
There are minor factions and major superpowers, and large factions within said powers (the Power Play component). I haven’t really bothered with them much, though, nor with the Engineers content–which basically opens up crafting and upgrades to your stuff. Mostly, the only superpower rank grinding I’ve done is to eventually unlock ships that would otherwise be unavailable. You can still have a great time without that, though, IMHO. It is a “make your own fun” kind of game.
Occasionally there will be economy weirdness that is simply inexplicable, like the following–high supply of a good being sold at well above the galactic average price, for no discernible reason. I checked the “state” of the factions and none of them were in “outbreak” possibly explaining the high price–no wonder they can’t unload any:

Yeah it is Euro Space Truck Sim. But also the best space pew pew this side of Tie Fighter. And the closest you’ll get to flying around in space as you’ll ever get short of signing up with NASA.
Its gorgeous. Its vast. It has some weird bugs and is being actively developed. It cares not for your existence or enjoyment. Just like RL, you’ll have to forge your own path towards fulfilment and satisfaction.
I fucking love it. K/M is doable, as is a controller. In time you will succumb to the dark side and get yourself a HOTAS and a grown-up HMD.

And here I thought I’d get some folks to talk me out of it. I should know better :)
So I’ll throw a dissenting opinion in here. While I really do like the “idea” of E:D I find I lose interest in the game after about 30 mins. That’s mostly because I’m not the kind of player who really enjoys finding their own narrative, for example I would never enjoy Minecraft. E:D really doesn’t do anything to draw you into its world other than its scale and adherence to simulation. If you’re the type of player who can be thrown into the deep end and make your own fun as you go along then I’m sure you’ll love E:D but if you’re like me and you need some sort of connection to the game world beyond the systems in place E:D will probably leave you cold.

See how agape and me dont dissent on the aimlessness of the game. We just feel differently about it. S!
Pretty much the same sentiment here, except I enjoyed Minecraft in the beginning, before the guy became a millionaire and it went to his head. :)
I love Elite, but I’m currently burnt out and bored with it right now. Initially I played a ton of it, but I’ve reached a point wherein I need a break while I wait for more content. If it clicks with you initially, it’ll be great for a whole, but if you’re like me, you’ll hit a wall wherein missions are no longer fun, trading is boring and combat is annoying. I’m really hoping they fix things like mining and mission variety to get me back in.
As of right now though, if I want a spaceship game, I’ll play Jumpgate or Evochron.
If you want a space exploration game at scale then Elite + Horizons is probably still king. A genuinely sized galaxy to explore and you could really be (and often are) the first person to discover something.
I still dig it, every few weeks I dip back in. Agree with Brian Mining could be improved though.
Yeah, I still love the game, and do return to it from time to time. This would happen with Jumpgate and I too. Play hard for many months, then take a break of several months due to boredom/burnout. Elite is still an amazing game, there are just…caveats to it.
So Jumpgate is still live? How did I miss this?
BTW, anyone else having the ED+Horizons client program hanging on exit (black screen) the last few days? I’ve had to alt-tab to the desktop and End Task from the task manager.
Hmm, problem went away after uninstalling Malwarebytes premium 3.0 , which also seems to have some weird incompatibility with Microsoft Security Essentials for now.
It was resurrected by some folks in Russia somehow, and is totally free to play now.

Sho’nuff. I’m hoping to do something maybe on a monthly basis with Jumpgate this year, to hopefully get more folks playing. My handle is Veloxi in game.
So what’s the basic trick to setting power priorities so that you don’t run out in a pinch? For the first time I have modules and such that exceed the power provided by my ship’s A-rated power plant by a mere 2%. So I’ve set things like the cargo scoop and wake scanner at lower priority than, say shields and thrusters. Is that the idea?

Sounds like you have the right idea. Do you mean your power is exceeded when you deploy your hardpoints and your weapons suddenly need juice, or is it always running over? For the former, futzing with your power priorities is the idea. In the latter case you may want to disable something (like that wake scanner) to get below the extra 2%, at least until you need to scan some wakes and turn it back on.
Lower numbered priority items have more priority, so priority 1 modules take precedence over priority 2 and 3. Ideally when you run out of power, you want your modules to stage in a way that leaves you functional. Typically, I’ll have my cargo scoop on priority 3, and my FSD and fuel scoop on priority 2. That way if I need to deploy hardpoints, it’s because I’m in combat and shouldn’t be needing my FSD or fuel scoop, and if I do need to scoop something up, well everything else had better be dead.
Oh, and if you have access to Horizons, try to get an invite from one of the engineers that tinkers with power plants. Even the most basic mod on it can give you a 5-9% boost, and the materials to do level 1 mods are trivial.
