Scanned my first undiscovered by anyone else Neutron star today. Feels good :)
And I’ve yet to be the first to (officially) find a star of any kind. Finally found my first (rather boring) planets last session, though.
Thats cool though! I hope you landed on them as well! I remember getting the first “first tag” on anything was so awesome.
None of them were landable, unfortunately. cue sad trombone

Woooo, Frontier just posted a dev update which talks about multicrew details. That’s much better than I had anticipated, especially after their poor Wings implementation!
-
You can hot-join your friend from anywhere in the galaxy. You just log out of your current ship, and log into an extra crew seat in your friend’s. When you’re done, you log out and back into your existing ship.
-
Two roles: Fighter Con and Gunner. Both add bonuses to the ship in the form of an extra Pip they can each choose to assign to WEP/SYS/ENG.
-
Gunner plays from a 3rd person perspective and controls all Turret-based weapons. All available turrets track towards your reticle. Gunner also gets advanced scanners and modules, with the ability to do stuff like kill warrant scan in 360 degrees.
-
Fighter Con is pretty self-explanatory. You can launch and control a docked fighter on the mothership – even if the pilot has launched an NPC controlled fighter, allowing for two fighters to be in flight at once.
-
All crew gets FULL BOUNTIES. If you blow up a 100,000cr anaconda, everyone gets 100,000cr.
-
Ship rebuy costs are reduced per crew memeber.
It is so neat that Frontier implemented something as cool as multicrew. It’ll be just like piloting up a B-25 DethStar… in GEnie Air Warrior… 20 years ago. Except that, because of ED’s shitty peer-to-peer model, that DethStar will just end up shooting at bots.
<eyeroll.gif>
All of us who want more and exciting PvE content are sure thrilled that we can now multicrew a dethstar against the same old NPCs. And, oh yeah, we’ll get to customize our pilot avatars.
Time to uninstall ED again.
That all sounds good, but the anti-fun Immersion Police are on the case and will soon get FD to nerf it.

I love space ship artemis as much as the next guy, but this leaves me stone cold. I want NPC crew members. To me, elite is a single player game. Fuck other people.
You know what’s interesting? (Well, to me, probably not to you, but whatever).
Warning: c.s.i.p.g.space-sim style salt ahead
There’s these two games on my hard drive: Elite Dangerous and The Division. Both of have struggled mightily to balance the unbalance-able: using the same game systems and values for both PvE and PvP play. And both have, or are in the process of, abandoning PvE (solo) play in favor of PvP. Both games have a ongoing “metas”, which is absolutely the best layout/equipment you can have and indeed must have to compete at PvP, and these metas are never eliminated, but simply change with every patch. (Think shield cells, engineer boosts, etc.)
I can forgive The Division for this because, well, multiplayer/PvP was in its DNA. But I’ll never forgive Frontier for doing a 180 after gamma and then from there on out doubling down on its broken PvP model with every patch. Every major feature update except planetary landings has been aimed at PvP. The stupid, undercooked, and still broken factions crap. The stupid, undercooked grind of engineers. And I have no doubt that multicrew/fighters will be stupid and undercooked as well.
Meanwhile, FD tries to drum up excitement with its halfhearted CGs and the occasional “alien” 3D mesh randomly stuck on a planet somewhere. I might hope that the intro of aliens would spice the game up, but somehow FD is going to fuck that up too, and we’ll just end up with another generic NPC type to grind through.
I’ve gone back to playing Jumpgate y’all.

Yeah, well, my momma taught me not to play with the dead!
I wonder if a crew member can drive the rover on the surface while the pilot controls the ship? Would be fun for me and my son to go moon hopping.
They held a couple of livestreams this week for 2.3 features.
-
Camera suite: Some powerful camera tools for capturing screenshots and video (and just admiring your ship).
-
Megaships: New dockable station types which will move around (perhaps associated with community events?). The ship featured in the video is named “Fisher’s Rest”.
-
Holo-me: Avatar creation. Looks great. I am going to spend way too many hours fiddling with things like cheekbone height.
-
Multi-crew: Invite friends over to your ship. Also match-making by activity (pirating, bounty hunting, mining, etc.). Crew members can take gunnery roles or jump into launched fighters. Gunnery view is a 360 external camera. The gunner can scan and lock targets, fire turreted weapons, deploy defenses, etc. All crew members get access to an expanded set of pips for power distribution.

Some secret stuff, apparently, they aren’t revealing yet.
Goes into beta soon-ish.
Videos below. (Note: they had some technical issues with the multi-crew in video #2, so if you want to jump to the playing together part (versus the informational part) it starts at around 52:00.)

Been trying to bag a ground shot of one of these blighters for some time. They tend to not have planets close enough in. Finally got lucky today with a nice binary :)
That’s a really cool shot!

It really is a gorgeous shot of a gorgeous game. Eveytime I watch The Expanse I feel like firing up ED.
Great Photo :)
Re: JMR : If The Expanse consisted of only of traveling from A to B with cargo, then back again, until you could afford a bigger ship to travel to C with even more cargo? :-)
Can you start a new game of ED now and pick a side to fight for, and immediately get into the action - or is it still space truckers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120199/)
So my Oculus is not working in this update as it did before. There are no options to enable the HMD that I can see. It was okay before the latest update.
Anyone know what’s going on?
Hmm now you mention it mine is a bit different. it gets stuck at the start saying elite64 is taking a while to load. Weird. i did turn off auto start for steamVR though, I cant figure out how to get it back on :)
I was getting that message prior to the Commanders update, but it at least worked. It wasn’t using SteamVR before for me though, it was using the native Oculus implementation.
Maybe it’s time to switch over to the Oculus store version?
