Ok, router port forward setup:

Dropbox folder with a) the latest network log file (which wasn’t in the location you mentioned, but rather in a Log subdirectory), b) the AppConfig.xml file, with the changes suggested by Michael Brooks (here), and c) the AppNetCfg.xml file, which I’d not heard of before, no idea what I should be doing with this one, although I did try changing uPNP to “false” but that doesn’t work.

Any suggestions obviously greatly appreciated, and if you can fix it I will send you a thank you note from Smaug.

Did you try the multiplayer while DMZ’d (everything forwarded) just to verify it is actually a router problem?

Well, I’ve just learned what a DMZ is, and that my router can apply it! Good idea, but no effect. :(

By the way, I should add that I went into my uni office yesterday, and while doing so tested out the Elite Dangerous connection (on my laptop).

The START menu option was not greyed out. Alas I was too busy to go any further, but this appears to be specifically an issue with my router setup.

If it doesn’t work while DMZ’d then it’s not likely a problem you can fix with forwarding ports, since to the internet that makes your computer look like there is no router and everything you could forward is forwarded.

Also try your laptop from home, just in case it’s something peculiar to your system.

Couple of things that strike me immediately…

-Your port forwarding is for 192.168.1.6, the game log suggests your IP is actually 192.168.1.5.
-Your AppConfig.xml doesn’t have the port changed from 0 to 5100 as suggested by Michael Brooks in that post.

Ok, I just had a brainwave (or rather, I stopped being dense) and tried tethering my internet connection to my phone.

It works.

And that’s with the settings I uploaded above. So yes, definitely a router issue. I don’t really want to play tethered on my phone because a) I get 1 bar in the house and b) I have a 200 Mb monthly bandwidth limit, after which a large truck parks in front of my house and proceeds to drain me of all my worldly possessions. Or so I hear.

Synth, not sure why the AppConfig.xml is default, I definitely changed it and saved it the other day. I will fix it.

If you had the wrong IP that would explain it, including while DMZing your computer didn’t work.

Please let us know what happens when you change the IP address you’re forwarding to, Krok! Definitely looks like it’s being forwarded to an incorrect IP.

It would. 192.168.1.6 is my desktop PC which I’d been getting to work the last few days. 192.168.1.5 is my laptop which I’m on right now because there’s a huge storm brewing and I don’t want to fry anything if the power goes out.

I changed the IP on portforwarding… doesn’t work.
I DMZ’s 192.168.1.5… doesn’t work.

I fixed the AppConfig.xml by the way and uploaded the new version to the dropbox folder.

Just to try something, in the Router config, can you try changing the port ends/starts to 5100 instead of having a range? That’d be both for external and internal.

Also, the little checkbox on the far left side of the row. Is that just to select it for deletion? Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t a column for “Enable” or something like that.

Try connecting and if it fails, upload the latest netLog file.

Tried that, doesn’t work, latest log file uploaded. The reason I used a range is because when I specified the exact port, the port open util I was using told me the port wasn’t open. The range fixed it.

Yep, the little check box is simply a selection box for when you want to edit / delete entries.

Try disabling windows firewall for the heck of it too.

Just spitballing here, but what sort of AV/anti-malware do you have active? Of course, if you connected fine with the same laptop from your office, that couldn’t be the problem.
Also, you are running the latest version of the launcher, aren’t you?

Here’s something I find interesting. From the first log, when you had the range of UDP ports set, I see this:

Yet when you set it to 5100 specifically:

I notice in the first log, it’s connecting on port 59796. Or I should say it’s trying to connect, in any case. There is one failure message.

The second log on the other hand shows the correct port (5100) and it’s not reporting any errors. The second log looks “cleaner” to me, but I’m unsure why it’s not connecting. It’s not reporting any errors.

It’s a little baffling why the utility you’re using didn’t show an open port when you set it to 5100, yet it did when you used a range. It seems like when it’s configured to use the range, something is not working right. Just for shits and giggles, I’d be curious to see what happens if you have it use a range and ALSO set up a second rule for UDP 59796.

KK - you’re not due for a new router are you? Have you contacted your ISP to see if they’ve ever run into this before? I know usually they’re usually useless, but once in a while they do have solutions you can use.

A friend of mine had issues with Steam when he moved. Every time he’d launch Steam, his internet would just die (laptop wifi). It was the weirdest thing in the world and we never did solve it. He moved a month later and and never had the problem again. I think they had a Linksys router where he had the problem.

Tried that the other day, no dice.

The only thing I’m running is MSE. Yes, I’m running Gamma 1.04.

Curious. I set up a second rule, it doesn’t work immediately but I’ll try changing AppConfig.xml to point to 59796 too…

Sadly, 59796 second rule doesn’t work under any scenario. I’ve uploaded the last two logs (using 5100 then 59796) in case that helps.

This really is very odd! Jeff, the router is several years old now, but other than this we’ve had no reason to think there’s anything wrong with it. But perhaps it’s just out of touch with modern internet and we should take it out the back and shoot it? Poor thing. Before I did that, though, I’d try the “nuke it from orbit” option and flash the firmware. There has to be a logical explanation for this though, and now I’m intrigued to know what it is. Some other setting in the router, perhaps? Kinda frustrating to know so little about networking at a time like this. :)

Thanks everyone for devoting page 53 of this thread to trying to fix my connection issues, I appreciate it, even if the solution still eludes us.

OK all, I’ve created a group call “JPINARD”. It is home to QT3 and BF. When they give us the opportunity to change names I’ll change it something better. My Commander name is “jpinard” so please friend me as well.

JOIN JPINARD :)

Um, what’s BF? I did see you on there–did you friend me (CMDR QUEEBATRON) at some point? Anyway, I was playing in the Certis group from GWJ. But yeah, I’ll join the JPINARD group, you bet.
