@krayzkrok (which I’ve always read as “Krazy Krok”)

Actually, I was asking specifically about the launcher program, not the main client program. Depending on when you first downloaded the game (and if you only bought in right before the first Gamma then this doesn’t apply) sometimes older versions of the launcher haven’t worked with the newer main clients during the beta phase.

Has Frontier tech support not been any help?

So… how is it the game? As I understand it, the gamma version is the final version as is features are already locked in, they are now just fixing bugs until 1.0.

Few people notice that. :) It is still pronounced “krazy krok” but I thought it was fun to swap the letters which still gives “kray” “zee” “krok”, plus it’s more unique as a username for whatever game I play.

Ah ok, I downloaded the launcher when gamma was made available to Kickstarter backers, by which time it was already 1.01. I can always try re-downloading it just in case.

I’ve got a ticket in with Frontier tech support, listed as “pending” so it could take hours or weeks.

Haven’t been able to even download the launcher. Logging into the store gets me a blank page after lots of waiting. Ugh.

Good to see you are keeping at it KK! Vesper, perhaps refreshing that page would work. FDEV are pretty busy tinkering with their servers, so might be you caught them with their pants down so to say.

I finally bought myself a cobra yesterday evening. Kitted her out for maximum trade, but kept the shield and guns. 40 tons makes for a tidy bit of profit. Next upgrade is going to be the FSD, then power generator and distribution, thrusters, guns a nice range of scanners and a scoop and i’m off into the galaxy to boldly go. But that means about 2 or 3 million worth of creds more traderuns. Ah well. I’ll just put on the radio and go space truckin’ :D

I’ve sent an email to my ISP to see whether there might be some server-side shenanigans going on. I’m not aware that they use a proxy, but who knows.

I hope this game is worth it after all this hassle. ;)

So, I just started this again, and first off, I can’t get my Ps4 controller to work with it - has anyone done so successfully? I’m currently using an Xbox 360 style controller (Gamespots one) and can’t figure out if I should use the one with Yaw, or without Yaw.

I am really bad at this game - took me about 30 minutes to shoot down the first combat tutorial opponent and havent dared the second one yet.

The short sticks on a controller do not allow the precision needed for combat using fixed forward firing weapons. Get gimballed ones or get a joystick. Get a joystick. Really, this game becomes so much better with it. As will descent, which can be had at GoG and DCS world which can be had at steam for the whopping price of free!

Well, I usually play games in the living room from a couch / couch chair thingie so a joystick is not really in the picture.

That reminds me, I really need to order a joystick today so I can get a little practice in before release. I also find myself hovering over the Freespace 2 icon on my desktop a lot lately and not having a joystick is the only thing holding me back.

Now I just need to remember which one I was going to buy.

or just use a large coffee table book. It’s not that hard.

While it certainly isn’t hard to use a joystick, I have no interest in it, as I was saying. I know David Braben uses a 360 gamepad himself often so the game should certainly be playable that way. I realize your intentions may be good, but it wasn’t my question whether to use a joystick or not, only how PS4 controllers may be used, and whether people play with Yaw or not on their gamepads.

Granted I’ve only played a relatively small amount with the tutorial, but so far I’ve been using a 360 pad with Advanced Control Pad, but I’ve tweaked it slightly so that left stick is pitch / roll, right stick is vertical / lateral thrust, and Yaw Into Roll is set to Initial Roll. I was raised on the original Elite, so roll became second nature, so much that Yaw controls always seemed wrong, almost “cheating”! After a few minutes of adjustment I’ve gotten pretty good with this arrangement, at least until I get a proper flight stick. I can beat all the combat tutorials fairly easily up to “Predator and Prey” which kicks my ass soundly, but that’s probably because I’m doing it very wrong (using silent running to sneak up on ships before I overheat, but before I can take them out the Eagle kills me quickly).

Practice, I would say. I think roll is more manoeuvrable once you get used to it, and will make you a better pilot. But go with whatever feels most comfortable and fun.

what you can do is bind a button to [switch roll/yaw]. this will allow you to make pure yaw adjustments when you are landing for example. Perhaps clicking the stick might be a good one if you set it to toggle. Roll is most definately and by design more maneouverable than just pure yaw. If you turn on yaw-on-intial-roll (which is very good to have on in combat!) be shure to make it turn off in the gear-down control setting. You want to be as precise as possible on the pad.

Use a different browser. Internet Explorer didn’t work for me but Chrome did.

I had not logged into the game in a while as I wanted to have a fresh go when Gamma hit and I’ve got to admit I’m a little lost. I thought we were supposed to have 2 ships right off the bat since we pre-ordered but I’m not seeing the second ship? The galaxy map is wildly different than before and I don’t seem to be in the pill to start. The only BB mission I can do is out of reach. The navigation panel has a billion entries compared to normal.

So ironic. When I first started playing I was doing everything I could to get out of the pill, and now that I start outside of it, I can’t wait to get back!

Your Eagle should be somewhere in a (relatively) nearby star system where you spawned. IIRC you can see an icon for it on the galaxy map.

If you enter a station that has a shipyard you can see it in the stored ships tab. That should tell you where its at. The freagle is a great ship for initial bounty hunting and even a bit of exploration. Good to see you’re back in the game Jpinard!

When I was using a 360 gamepad plus keyboard, I did play with yaw on the x-axis of the right stick (with the y-axis as vertical thrusters). Ideally, IMHO there should be a toggle that lets you swap that axis between yaw and lateral thrusters, but there isn’t one as far as I know (I haven’t really studied the control options lately, since I too bought a HOTAS, although a much less fancy-looking one than the one in the photo above–the HOTAS X). In the absence of such an option I suppose the yaw/roll toggle is the way to go.

No one answered. :(

@krayzkrok

If you’re still having routing issues - do you have an IP phone by any chance? I had my ooma system between my modem and my router (like you’re supposed to set it up) and found out it was blocking a TON of ports my games and other things needed - and I found no way to turn the blocking off in it’s configuration so my solution was to put the phone behind the router and everything works great now.
