Dean $35… you can’t go wrong. What I did is used industrial sticky velcro to attach to a lapboard so the whole thing sits in my lap. It’s very comfortable. But, learning to fly these things is very challenging especially fighting. It’s not your parent’s X-Wing.

J, yea I backed the kickstarter. Not regretting it for a minute though the binning of the truly offline mode is a bit of a bummer. I miss being able to pause the game when The Boss(my kid) calls, or his secretary (my wife) :P
Anyway, I find the game not terribly hard to learn, its comparable to a medium-core flight sim. Much easier than the DCS Su-27 for example. I fly it usin a fairly high end HOTAS, the G940 by Logitech. Not really happy about it, I’d rather have had the Saitek X52pro, but I cant justify replacing it just yet.
About the 2nd training scenario, the one that has you shoot the cans. Look closely at your targeting reticule. See those two pips? they are what your guns are actually aiming at. Notice that even though you have fixed guns, they do snap-to a mite. This is insanely useful on the sidey, the eagle and the viper. Sadly it aint enough to make the outer guns on a cobra useful :(
I am nearing my point of departure, my cobra is almost all B and C now. She needs better shields and dedicated explorer hardware and then I’m good to go. Upgrading the power generator was very much an improvement because not only does it give more fitting room powerwise but the best thing about it is that it greatly increases the ships heat dissipation capability. This means I can circle a star far longer and closer when tanking her up. Oh and I shouldnt forget the autorepair thinger ;-)
Spent this weekend building an Eagle into a nasty little knife-fighter. After some exploration and grinding, I’ve got a nice balance between legs (10+ LY jump capability) and functionality. It’s amazing what a couple of measly E-beam lasers can do when you can’t shake them off your tail and (thanks to power upgrades) they just don’t stop. There’s a couple of Asp drivers out there who can attest to that >:)
Like everyone else I suppose, I also did the Sol run just to see the Palm Trees on Galileo Station but then just pretty much just explored.
Sadly it aint enough to make the outer guns on a cobra useful :(
Missile racks.

Gimbals. Do you know what reloading a missile rack costs?!
I hate the seek time of gimbals. (OK, I liked the G beam in my Sidewinder but that Ford Escort of spaceships turns like a tank). Whipping my Eagle around is faster and more accurate than gimbals.
And if you’re rolling in a loaded Cobra, missile cost shouldn’t be a problem. :)

Ohhhh that’s all good information. My difficulty in combat is taking out an enemy in less than 40 hours - lol. Unless I fixate on the distance marker I can’t tell if he’s coming at me, sideways, flying away or boosting away. Embarassingly I even had a ship warp away when they were practically dead… with a load of gold and decent bounty on them.
I found out today they’ve sold 130,000 copies of the game so far. Pretty good, though I wonder how much that “reveal party” cost them. That looked like an insanely expensive setup they had.

Hopefully they put the game on Steam, that will certainly help visibility. Anyone know if they have plans to?
I am not certain that this is relevant to anyone but I was having an issue where every time I attempted to log in and entered a five letter authentication code I get a message about being “Forbidden”. It is not a particularly descriptive message. I raised a support ticket but they never responded. Today I checked the forums and found out from a user there that you need to run the launcher as Administrator. The desktop shortcut created by the installer does not set this. After making this change, the remaining files installed and I was able to run the tutorial. This is Windows 8.1.
In the tutorial I am getting approximately 30 frames per second on a 2008 Core 2 Duo PC but with a Nvidia GTX560SE graphics card. It sometimes goes as high as 45 frames per second if I remain still.

They won’t, though it may make sense after early adopters are invested in 6 months to a year. They’re getting a lot of cross-promotion via Youtube from Kerbal Space Program and Star Citizen.
Yeah, no Steam right away. Maybe eventually, who knows. It could massively increase the numbers of copies sold, but I can understand their wanting to keep their options open and have greater control of their product.
Paging jpinard… BTW, I saw you were online earlier, and whether I went into the Jpinard group, or Open Play, I couldn’t text you or communicate in any way. Is that a setting on your end or server nonsense or what, I wonder?
I’m at a different location today, tried to connect to E:D, works just fine from here. For some reason when I join Open Play it tells me that game mode is SOLO when I’m in the pause menu, not sure what’s up with that, although I haven’t actually left the station (I’m supposed to be working here!). The only downside is that on my laptop at lowest possible settings the frame rate is only just playable: inside the stations it’s about 10 fps, but better in open space (based on the tutorial at least). Asteroid fields are a bit of a drag on the framerate though.
Again, it feels like sitting in the cockpit of a sports car at a car show and not allowed to drive it anywhere. ;)
Anyway I hope that once I get to Europe over Christmas I’ll be able to connect from there. Only a couple of weeks to go for that.
Hmm, well, clearly your ISP at home has a lot to do with the failure to connect at all there. Now the fact that it still tells you you’re playing solo when you’ve meant to play open (at the other location) tells me that maybe the bandwidth is very constricted?
Well it’s a 100 Mbps line which by Australian standards is about as fast as you can get right now. Surely that can’t be the reason. My home connection isn’t quite so flash at 24 Mbps, but it’s decent enough.

Them should be plenty o’ meggerbits krokkerman. But something goes terribly wrong with the routing of them bitses. Ever had any trouble with other applications/games?
Certainly about as fast as you can get in Darwin! :D
Not a one, the router up until this point has been flawless.
Not that long ago we were still on dial-up, and then ISDN became available. It seemed like such an upgrade! I can’t see us getting 100 Mbps to our home within the next few years though, and as for 1000 Mbps, <insert laughing smiley here>

Is there a way for you to eliminate your router as a probable cause, ie bypass it or put in a different one?
I can eliminate it very easily!
Oh, right. Yes, well it’s a combined modem/router, so I’d have to replace it entirely. I’m getting to the point of finding a new one from a store with a decent return policy. That could take a while! I could just try and find a cheap modem and plug it directly into that, if it works then at least I’ll know it’s the existing router.
Don’t know anyone locally with an old one they can give as a test loaner?
