Hahaha, right. Because its leftists who are writing Lost Cause mythology into school textbooks, or rewriting history in such a way to establish a theocratic state which is literally the exact opposite of what was meant by things like separation of church and state.

I believe you’re British, right? Perhaps you are unaware of the long term right wing projects going on.

Also perhaps you are unaware of how for @Alstein the theocrats getting their way could literally be a death sentence.

And that is not a hyperbolic statement.

We’ve already had one person have to flee their home state due to the theocrats in Florida over what staying would mean for their child, and their possibility of criminal prosecution for letting their child be who they are.

Not that I am leaving Twitter yet, but I figured I would set up a Mastodon account since that is where most people I follow are talking about going. I can’t see it catching on with the masses because the first thing you have to do is pick a server, and I already have no idea what one I am supposed to pick.

Are you seriously suggesting that Orwell did not consider the threat of fascism when he wrote that? Are you really that ignorant?. “Those who control the past control the future” was part of a warning to the left of the path not to take, even in the face of fascism.

Come on, man, lighten up.

I mean, what can you expect for a software feature that was conceived, developed and deployed in checks notes less than a week?

Presumably the new Twitter Blue implementation contains many, many lines of code.

I just saw a thread from an Apple type blogger where he posted that the update with the new Blue is live, and people seem generally happy about it and want to subscribe. I don’t get it. The blue checkmark seems to be important for people.

It depends a bit on what you want out of it.

It generally helps if you have a friend who you would rec a server. I’d offer access to the one I use, but it’s heavily queer and leftist-focused.

For me, the big thing about mastodon that I like is that it’s non-corporate and decentalized. THere can be no Elon Musk of Mastodon.

The downside is that it’s a bit more complicated, much like 90s USENET. I’ll accept that complication as the price for a non-corporate social media.

One more tip: use the tusky app for mobile for Mastodon. (for the folks on counter.social, I don’t know if it works with that instance, but it should. It’s much better than the official app)

counter.social is basically Mastodon as well, though I think it’s fairly locked down from the places I go.

Sounds fine to me.

Isn’t it a bit early for calling how someone will be remembered after 1 week?
Also, I get that the USofA is the Centre of the Universe and all, but to us here in the rest of the world, Musk is known mostly for what he did succesfully (Tesla and pushing EV to mainstream, SpaceX and all that, Starlink and the positive effect on the Ukraine war), than because of his latest troll tweet in a right vs Left debate in the US.

Also, I specifically meant this is what the fascists were trying to do, and the only way to stop that was to take control ourselves, and not do that. However, I believe it is impossible not to put a thumb on the scale.

When you have a completely unfiltered marketplace of ideas the most extreme views take over. It’s truly a balance between being stifling and creating extremism.

I had good luck getting on journa.host (which appears to be aimed at journalists).

It’s all anecdotal, but I listen to a few UK podcasts, and Elon seems to be just as hated there as he is here. We have a lot a lot of people in the US who worship the ground he walks on. It’s well know if you say anything anti-Elon on Twitter his rabid fanbase will come after you.

Heh, if you think only USAns dunk on Elon, you clearly don’t watch Adam Something.

Why would I watch something that makes its money from ranting against a specific “bad” thing (Elon Musk in that channel’s case). It’s built a toxic fanbase that just wants something to hate, and the creator has to keep finding examples of the “bad” to rant against, even if it’s not real, or they don’t make the $$$ Objectivity is 0.

So looks like you decided a mere 5 days ago to jump into this thread and fight the good fight for Elon.

Good luck with that.

Oh and I might add you should maybe read the room (or maybe just the thread title) to see what you’ve signed up for.

Look he’s only taking something from hundreds of millions of people because he had a temper tantrum.

People’s entire livelihoods will be gone, it might sway an election, people in oppressive regimes will likely die, but it’s fine because a rich unpopular kid wanted to be considered cool by racists.
