Imagine you’re running an upstart Twitter competitor or your software has similar skillset needs. You see Elon post something, and an engineer responds explaining how it actually works and why Elon is wrong. Engineer gets fired. You look up this guy you saw on Twitter and saw he was the lead dev for X or Y, which are skillsets you need. So you reach out.

The guy didn’t verbally abuse Elon or anything. He just said he was wrong and explained how it worked.

That guy wasn’t trashing Musk, though. He was correcting him and then explaining things to Musk in response to his direct questions.

Are we really debating the “unprofessional” response of engineers to Elon “I DIT IT FOR THE LOLZ” Musk? Good on them. They’ll do just fine getting a new job.

I really looked for alternatives for a Tesla, but everything at their performance level (effective range of 400+ km at highway speeds, which I needed) was at least 20k€ more expensive and/or significantly worse (I really don’t like RWD cars, haven’t driven one in 20 years).

They really aren’t that expensive as far as long trip capable EVs go. If you prefer an ICE car, then yes, of course you can get something cheaper, but it’s not a very good comparison. Meanwhile, buying an ICE car now means the aftermarket value in 5 years will be zero around here (legislation wants all vehicles to be EV by 2035, manufacturers by 2030). Cities are starting to limit circulation of them too, and I love living in big cities.

Going for a non EV, non second hand (so temporary stopgap until more options are in the market) ICE car around here seems foolish to me.

I have the exact opposite reaction to those designs (I like traditional interior design - modern EV Mercedes, VW, etc…- more than Teslas, but that specific one looks really messy and, well, bad). I wish there was a HUD in the Teslas, though (VW EVs offer them, but they are not there in terms range, which sucks because I would have loved a better performing ID 5).

I didn’t know it was 2030 already.

In five years it will be 2028. Good luck selling a second hand ICE car in Europe then, or at least it would be my guess.

You can probably keep your job longer by having a flexible concept of dignity and self-worth, but personally I’d feel I was paying more than I was making. And for a billionaire man-child? No sir, no thank you.

We have to be nice to the billionaires. They’re a minority, you know.

Well, if you are going to do the ecologically sound thing, it will be to use the car for at least 10 years, maybe 15 if it doesn’t die.

Then you can buy an EV when there is all there is.

Also, the EU ban is on new cars in 2035, not used ones.

?? O_o ?? Over 10 years the average emissions just on fuel (discounting manufacturing) of an ICE car are double that of the full lifetime of an EV (including manufacturing). The ecologically sound move is to ditch the ICE car ASAP.

I was almost going to give Elon credit for a shred of humility, but of course it’s a troll, Elon has nothing left but ego and bullying.

Is this not them or something?

Ligma and Johnson? Is that serious?

No, it’s trolling.

I guess I don’t get the joke?

They weren’t real employees, AFAIK, they posed in front of Twitter offices with boxes and gave their names to the press as Ligma and Johnson. Ligma Johnson. Think Bart Simpson calling Moe’s for another prank.

Here’s one from the thread I rather liked that I hadn’t seen before:

Also

Will stop now since this isn’t a “funny image” thread, but suffice to say, amusing stuff in the thread I hadn’t seen before (although I lot I have already seen).

That graph is assuming you are not using E85 (flex fuel) which on average, cuts emissions by 50% and makes the lifetime GHG emissions much closer to an EV.

I messed around with AFLEET’s tool, where that graph came from, and at least in my area annual GHG emissions are 1.8 tons with E85 fuel and 1.5 tons with electrical energy. (Gas was nearly 3 tons annually) This is probably because I live in the midwest, the land of ethanol plants. Their calculator tool lets you choose location, power companies etc.

It is not as simple as “Buy an EV now” This is what EV manufacturers, and really every car manufacturer wants. They want you to ditch your car now, and give them more money.

There was a study done in Japan in 2021, that shows that environmentally, holding onto cars (as long as they are not gas guzzlers) for 10-15 years is more environmentally friendly than switching to an EV.

It is an interesting read, and of course, has a lot to do specifically with their country and how they use roads, transit etc. But universally, the environmental impact of just holding on to your car for a few more years is pretty strong.

Again, the mantra is reduce, reuse, recycle (in that order). Reducing consumption, by carpooling more, driving less, or buying less cars, is going to have the greatest impact. Re-using items, like buying used cars, or using your own car longer, is also good.

Run, run, pass…

E85 is not available over here and we have access to all-green (fully renewable) 0.03€/kWh electricity. In my particular case (because you moved from average to particulars) the lifetime emissions of an EV are just manufacturing and EOL.

But those are specifics. In general, emission-wise there’s no reason not to switch to EVs with access to sane power grids (that will become greener at an accelerating pace). The constraint is price (only heavy drivers save long term with current price differentials).

Really? Without considering the context? These aren’t slaves, they’re professionals. Do you value mindless loyalty to an idiot over speaking the truth, even if it perhaps isn’t wise? I mean, one or the other–either you think capitalists own our souls and our duty is to fellate them regularly, or you allow for different conditions and admit that sometimes the middle finger is the most professional approach.

Professionalism all to often gets conflated with bending over and taking it because the other guy has more money.
