Well I just had the iOS Twitter app die on me. I hit someone’s first post on a thread, went into the thread, when I was done, I hit the back button and got a blank screen. No nothing, just a completely blank white iPad screen. I quit out of the app and it’s back to normal.

Not sure how long I’ve been using Twitter, I think only 3-4 years, but first time I’ve seen something like that.

I sent a link to the zoeschiffer tweet from a few hours ago to a friend. They replied back that the tweet had been deleted. Uh-oh, was it fake news? No, turns out that the tweet was reliably showing up for signed-in users but reported as deleted for signed-out ones. Hadn’t seen anything like that before, and it resolved itself 10 minutes later.

Now, it could just be some kind of bog-standard eventual consistency issue rather than anything being completely broken. But if their eventual consistency replication delays are now longer than an hour, that’s a pretty bad sign too.

Yeah, I got cold sweats reading that list, and I’ve just nudged up against some of those issues.

Twitter automates a lot of the moderation and is able to differentiate between: this fucking pissing me off, that is fucking stupid, and you’re a fucking idiot, or fuck off asshole. That latter two get you a warning before you post, saying that’s not very nice. Presumably, if you make three tweets to the same person with similar language that gets a you timeout, like Shiva got.

Spite Musk and he could remove your access or messages directly. Didn’t they do that to some people who pretended to be him just last week?

This is a really, really good list. That dude (I assume it’s a dude, anyway) has seen some shit.

So my question, perhaps naïve: does Elon not know of all those possibilities, or does he just not care? I guess that can’t be answered. Or I suppose if he knows, it gives credence to the theory that his true goal is to destroy the place.

Elon surely believes that IT governance is basically the exercise of superpowers by a handful of tech lords; that process and practice and capacity have nothing to do with it.

I truly think he doesn’t understand this puny mortal shit where things like laws or consequences apply. He’s so wealthy, he’s insulated from even the most basic friction in life like planning dinner, never mind worrying about making rent. How can you expect him to understand what it’s like when a production cluster goes down in the middle of the night and the people with intimate knowledge of the setup being reachable or even there is the difference between minutes or hours of downtime.

They run their own data centers. That alone is a huge liability if understaffed.
Stuff breaks all the time: Disks go bad daily by the score, cables stop working for no apparent reason, you are replacing old stuff with new things all the time just to keep up.
And not only the servers and network gear… Is your air conditioning working? Do your backup generators work? Is the fuel on them still good? Smoke detectors detect smoke? When are the next roadworks just on top of your main fiber connection scheduled?
There’s a million things that go wrong all the time. The probability of anyone that knows how to fix some of them not being there anymore must be 100% already

“I don’t understand it, but it must be simple.”

He’ll sleep on the factory floor until he’s fixed everything creating yet another myth about Musk the Mensch

I guarantee Musk says stuff like “why do we need quality assurance, when we can just staff good developers that don’t write bugs?”

Musk just unbanned Jordan Peterson and Babylon Bee (and Kathy Griffin).

I am sure that these worthies will use their new platform and bandwidth responsibly and cause no difficulty or upset whatsoever. It shall be rainbows of erudition and unicorns of free speech all around.

No, it’ll be a free for all hellscape, but they’ll do their darndest to make sure it’s a safe hellscape for advertisers.

Hard to wrap my head around this concept. :)

Yes, but what I said on Twitter wasn’t harassment unless a single Tweet can be considered harassment. Also people say worse to me several times a day. Hell, people say racist and anti-Semitic things and reporting them comes back with they didn’t violate the rules.

But they didn’t say them to Cernovich and, by extention, Musk.

I only made one to Cernovich, iirc. The rest were to other random idiots.

Meanwhile there are accounts that copy/paste the same exact block of text 500+ times an hour and somehow the system “can’t” detect those and reporting them does nothing. And that was when Twitter had employees.

Every time I get updated about what’s happening at twitter, I think of this scene.

This is crazy-time shit show.
