It’s hella annoying that it’s been co-opted from a lucky Chinese number to a freakin’ Nazi salute.
Oh, I thought it was from German WW2 tank markings, like the Z of Russia…

If it’s a free speech platform, why does he have to use a code to say what he wants to say?
Im guessing he doesn’t have to, but it is a form of group signalling perhaps.
There’s also that connection. But it’s used in place of “Heil Hitler”.
Yeah thats nees to me, yet somehow so obvious when you think about it.

I think you’re reading too much into it. This is what he is replying to, and where the 88 came from:
(And that is a legit pop-sci account with 700k followers, not some alt-right troll.)

Musk saw the number 88 and repeated it because he knew his right wing followers would love it. The MO with these guys is always “you’re reading too much into this”, that they’re just joking around.

This is the white supremacist version of seeing the number 69 and replying “nice”, this isn’t new guys.
There’s no doubt Elon is a very good troll.
Plausible deniability is fucking annoying.
Same with stochastic terrorism.

His reply guys still heard it
Is 14 a secret bad number too?
Elon’s the right kind of stupid to literally have that stoner guy response of like, “whoa dude, what will the earth be like in 87 million years? Think about it man” had the original tweet been made one million years ago.
But yes, he’s also a troll who thinks 420 and 69 are funny and might very well think it’s a funny transgression to tweet some dumb white supremacy code number too.
I literally don’t think there’s any way to tell from that tweet alone which was the case, so I’m not here to defend him, but I also won’t be clutching my pearls on this one, thanks.

Yeah 14 is quite bad too, particularly in the vicinity of 88

Points have been made already, but yes, 14 in the context of 88 is a 99.9% callout to Hitler.

Twitter is not replaceable for me right now. I really want Twitter to stick around, at least until something else could take its place. As much as I still love Twitter I genuinely feel a little gross when I like a Tweet now. I’m just thinking, oh god, I’m just boosting the engagement for this platform for a guy posting stuff like this every day. Ugh.
