What I don’t understand is, if an game is launched on Epic, and you hate Epic, are you entitled to pirate (aka steal) a copy for yourself? Some on Reddit seem to think it’s justified, but I don’t see how.

Of course not.
Let’s get real here, some of that group is going to be younger and already pirates. They had a lot of excuses for it prior to Epic.

“People on reddit” in being wrong shocker :) I’m no fan of Epic, but pirating a game because a developer made a reasonable commercial decision is a despicable theft of that developers effort.

If my desire to not deal with the EGS is stronger than my desire to play the game, then I don’t play the game. It certainly gives me no right to steal the work of a development studio who is selling their games there!
Reddit (like everywhere, I guess) is full of idiots. Gamers in particular can be, uh… interesting.
There are legitimate reasons to be annoyed with Epic and the focus should be on that.
Gamers that pirate, review bomb, or fake stolen artwork are just muddying the waters and weakening their own position. In the spirit of JC Denton, what a shame.
That happened a few days ago where Epic was accused of stealing artwork from someone on Deviant art for a Fortnite skin. Investigation found that the accuser faked the whole thing by editing their portfolio after the fact. There are legitimate concerns, making up artificial ones is counterproductive.

Here’s a link to where it was brought up in the Fortnite thread. Epic didn’t steal anything, it was just an artist abusing the fact that the site doesn’t make note of edit dates to try to make Epic look bad.

The argument I’ve seen on reddit is that since Epic is paying for a minimal number of sales, you’re technically not stealing – at least from the dev. Which is only true if the dev sells less than the minimum. But piracy is piracy.
Wait, you are still stealing. I mean, you are stealing from Epic instead of the store, but you are still stealing.
Man, this whole debate has made me question my Steam Game library. There are a lot of shitty people arguing in favor of a total steam Monopoly.
Wow, some people are really trying to find a way to justify pirating something. That would be only true if Epic sells + the number of people who pirate the game is less than the minimum sales. Also, as legowarrior mentions, that would still be stealing, just from Epic instead of the dev.
I’m not going to lie, I pirated stuff back in my youth, but it’s interesting how people justify this vs. physical things. For example, if these people collected figurines, and a particular figurine they wanted was only available at Walmart but they hated Walmart and refused to shop there. Would they then think it’s ok to go and steal one from Wal-mart since they want the figurine for their collection and it’s the only place they could get it?

Yeah I agree, piracy is piracy. The rationalization people go through is something to behold. :)
If I want the game bad enough, I’ll pay for it. If I don’t want the game bad enough to buy it on EGS, then I’ll pick it up on Steam along with the updates and expansion that has come out in the year since.

Just a note – you’re still rewarding the devs for their decision if you buy at full price. I will only buy these games at dirt cheap prices. I’m already waiting a year, so another 6 months is not going to hurt.

My opposition to EGS is mostly that I don’t like having to use an inferior client. I’m not too concerned about rewarding/punishing/sending a message, I would just prefer my games on Steam so for a lot of them I’ll just wait to buy them there.
To be honest, though, a year after a game has come out I likely may have forgotten about them or just moved on to other things, so it might take a sale for it to come to my attention. :)

That’s why a year feels so excessive. 3 months would have been fine with me. You get the big whales who can’t wait, but give other people choice regarding a game they’re excited about.

One might even suspect their objections to the EGS aren’t actually about business ethics.
You mean it’s really about ethics in gaming journalism?
LOL - sorry, I couldn’t resist :)
