You know who had timed Exclusives? Impulse!
I will see myself out.
How do you not understand that? I lost 20+ games when Impulse went under. If Epic disrupts the industry and puts Steam out of business as all the games become exclusive to other platforms, then I will lose hundreds of games, including many that I still play regularly. Even if you think Steam survives, GOG looks to be on the ropes itself.
It is strange to me that you keep sitting this thread and downplaying the concerns of everyone else.
And, and people have grudginly accepted the first party exclusives. That if a company makes a game and decides to sell it on their store only, that is their choice. Third party exclusives that are paid are new and haven’t really happened in PC sphere until Epic came along. And I know you think it is great (I would think so too if I was the one getting paid), but generally people do not like having their choice of where to buy things taken away, particularly when the only remaining choice is inferior to the existing ones. And when it happens the way Metro Exodus and such happened.

Those are first party, and it’s not well-liked they do that, but it is different. You know that’s different right?.
I mean Epic Games has a list of exclusives. That’s the word they’re using, and they’re not tying it to hardware either. Are you trying to penalize me for using the word the entire industry, including Epic, is using for this?
All the games ended up on Steam. Eventually. After Impulse went under.
With the games published by Stardock, you can still get from Stardock, and connect to steam. Hopefully you did that. Also, you can still download the Gamespot launcher (it’s outdated, but available, and will recognize all your games that you have downloaded.
I had about 12 games from Impulse. When Impulse went on to Gamespt, I was able to download all the games still. I downloaded all the games, and saved them to my harddrive. That includes Kohan 1 and 2, BG 1 & 2, Icewind Dale, and the other one. Of them, I did lose a few games, like a Zombie Driving Game, and the Impulse MOBA. Which sucks. And if you think that is the end result that might happen to Epic, than I might avoided Epic, but I was able to salvage all the games that I actually like, which is more than I can say about the games on CDs that I’ve lost or broke.
But I doubt anyone would dislodge Steam, and with GoG, everything is DRM free, so what do we care if the store goes under? As long as you own the game and have it on your computer, you are fine. You are safe. Hell, I bet the launcher will still work. The Impulse/Gamestop Launcher actually works.

I agree.
I have no animus to Epic, will probably get RGO and Hades, but also don’t get many games early, in fact the last time I bought a game at release was… Transistor?
But there is some serious bad faith arguing going on here. Not all, by any means, but a few particular people.
I think @Nesrie’s list was a decent encapsulation of things too.
Penalize you? What? Where am I arguing the use of the word exclusive?
Why, as a purchaser, are first party vs third party games different to you? Most consumers don’t even know the difference - they have no idea who made the game or what their relationship to the store or platform is. Truly it is a small cross section of people who do.
I’m just curious to know if this thread is what Travis is doing while he’s waiting for a build to complete.
^_^
You might not be wrong. But I really should drop out again.

Nothing I bought on Impulse is something I desired to play a month after Impulse got sold to Gamestop. Steam might be a bit different, but that which I desired to play, it would be continued somewhere else should Steam go down tomorrow.
You never bought Kohan 1 and 2?

You’re trying to tie the word exclusive to hardware at the same time every few weeks or os we get an announcement that some game is going to be an Epic exclusive and that’s not tied hardware. It just shows you how arbitrary these exclusives are. At least with the consoles, there is some hardware consideration and even then we’re seeing more games show up on the beefier systems.
They’d have to know to an extent right or they wouldn’t know where to get the games that aren’t on Steam… games that are say only on Origins, like I don’t know, Anthem. You think the average gamer is so incompetent that they don’t know how to get Anthem. I mean there are a lot of people unhappy with the game. I assume it’s because they figured out how to get it which means they had a general idea of where to go to get it. People figured out how to buy and install Sims 4 too, and there use to be endless forum wars, ridiculous ones, about how not real gamers Sims players were and yet they managed to figure out how to get their game too.
I’m not following why you think most people don’t know the difference. Maybe they don’t know the difference between say a publisher and developers, but prior to Epic they also knew which games they couldn’t buy on there.
I bring it up, again, because people mention console exclusives. That is the key thing about console exclusives and why they matter and why people don’t like them.
I give up though. I’m out y’all! Carry on.

Not bad, just risky.
It will probably be a very bad day for gamers like myself if Valve goes out of business in the near future.
It seems that all of them are timed, but are they? Do we know for sure if Borderlands 3 is coming to Steam? But otherwise, yes, I mostly agree that since the exclusives are timed, the sky isn’t crashing down on us just yet.
Naturally I do. I’ve spent several thousand bucks on digital games. I don’t wanna lose 'em. I am but a humble engineer of limited means and I like my games. Please don’t take them from me!
PS: Sorry to see you’re out. FWIW, I think you’re a stand-up guy and appreciate that you’re willing to discuss such a heated topic with us.
BACK TO WORK ON THE GAME, YOU. ;)
Honestly, I’m just surprised any still cares about them.
He is, and he just has work to do.

I had the disk for Kohan. Just used a no-CD crack. Didn’t buy it again until Steam.
Kohan 2 was in the no desire to play category because it stunk.
