Oh well, I had a few games on Impulse that I am glad I saved, including all three Kohan games and all of the infinity Engine games. All are general available elsewhere, but I am glad not to repurchase them.
Although, one trend that I both like and hate on steam is the trend of anniversary editions. I like it, because general, if you own the original on steam, you get an update version (Titan Quest was great), but I hate it, because if the version you have isn’t on steam, well, no one cares (Titan Quest on Disk, don’t even bother).
I got lucky, because I had a basic version from a Humble Bundle, but I didn’t bother with it because I had the full version on CD. If it wasn’t for an accident of some set, I would never have gotten the full upgrade. Makes you think that Steam really has us all locked in.
But I have already stated that my fear is that currently, I can’t buy games from other platforms for fear that Steam or one of it’s resellers will have the same game and or its DLCs for less at some point. It’s hard to see Epic or anyone compete with that. And I don’t like having one vendor have that much control over me.
Man, I go to a couple morning meetings, then hit lunch, and this thread balloons!

Respectfully, that’s because you’re viewing this solely as a developer. We’re not developers. I submit that you don’t fully understand the bits you are calling ‘weird,’ and that word is not super-helpful.

There’s also the matter that he’s a developer who has already signed on to Epic’s exclusivity deal. There is no going back, and I would suggest that he’s the last person on this forum whose mind you would expect to change.

This may apply to most of us here ;) I suspect that opinions have hardened. Heck, I’m at the point where buying something on the Epic storefront would feel like a betrayal of… I’m not sure what. It’s emotional at this point. I’m on Team Steam, and I guess I’m staying there.

I could definitely see Epic redeeming themselves in my eyes. They just haven’t done it, or even tried.

Yeah. My position doesn’t have to be permanent, but it does require them to give a shit about customers at some point. For whip cream on top, they can stop acting like dicks every time they make a statement too.

Didn’t Epic explain that they’re not really trying to compete on consumer-friendly features? I thought I remembered an interview where Sweeney basically said, “We can’t beat Steam on consumer-facing stuff, so we’ll just use exclusives to force them to buy here.”
Can someone summarize me the last… 200 posts that you have written in less than 24 hours?
Because sure as hell I’m not going to read everything.
Sweeney specifically said they are going to compete on price also. So far we’ve seen it with one game Metro Exodus and I am pretty sure it was only lower price in the US.

KevinC nailed it about 150 posts ago.
Yes, but if I do, someone in the group is going to put me on blast. We’ve gone full on Tribalism here, with everyone arguing that the other side simple doesn’t understand what is truly important. So, I won’t.
Seriously, the amount of energy I’ve put into keeping up with this issue, you’d like I was solving climate change instead of arguing the merits (or cons) of a new store front and whether (or not) Epic is to be trusted, or will be around in a few years, or whether Epic is (or is not) creating a barrier to entry by creating exclusives, and whether (or not) they are in any way similar to exclusives on the console side of things. Also, whether (or not) it will be able to salvage games if Epic (or Steam) goes under.
It’s all very very very silly. And no one will just move on because each side is convinced that the other side is just fooling themselves.

That’s why the first post is a wiki now. It summarizes all the arguments, then you can make your own decision.
In the end of the day, I have 3 goals.
- Cheaper games.
- More store fronts and platforms to compete for my money.
- More of the money I spend going to the developers, rather than a store.
Also, where is Half Life 3?

Because in big business, it’s always better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.

Oh good. People are dying and why do people care about games argument. I am so glad we circled back to that again.

You may be thinking of this interview.
“It’s nearly perfect for consumers already… There is no hope of displacing a dominant storefront solely by adding marginally more store features or a marginally better install experience. These battles will be won on the basis of game supply, consumer prices, and developer revenue sharing,” Sweeney reckons.
There’s a difference between not trying to compete and not giving a shit.
I’m willing to use them without waiting the whole 5 years I waited to trust and use Steam, but they have to do a lot better.

In terms of the discussion that’s been going round and round in this thread, I get that not everyone shares the same concerns. Some things don’t affect people based on their individual use case or there are just features that are not important to them. I just wish that particular people in this thread that aren’t concerned could just leave it at that, rather than wave off every complaint that people have as being emotional, irrational, or my personal favorite: racist (note: not brought up today).
Myself, I wouldn’t care a bit if someone jumped into this thread and left a huge Avengers spoiler. I’m sure I’ll get around to seeing the movie eventually, but I don’t really care if someone shares every plot twist. I don’t particularly like the movies anyway, and when I do watch them I’m not in it for the story. I fully recognize that some people are really looking forward to the movie and would absolutely hate that. If they laid out how a spoiler reduced the enjoyment they got out of seeing the film, I wouldn’t roll my eyes at them being “weird” and “emotional”, despite not feeling that way myself. I’m not really trying to make an analogy here, just pointing out that people care about different things and are going to have vastly different reactions based on how much (or little) they care about the particulars.
If you like or have no problems with Epic’s way of conducting business in the past or present? No problem! If you don’t utilize many of Steam’s features and so don’t care that you lose them? Okay! If you’re just happy developers get a bigger cut and that’s worth switching over? Very understandable position. If you’re posting in this thread while sitting in a house built out of Epic money and really want them to succeed, I’m sincerely happy for you!
Some people in this thread (myself included) have concerns or things they don’t like about Epic or the EGS. Those concerns have been outlined multiple times every time this thread gets kicked up. If you don’t share them that’s totally understandable, but I think waving it off as “oh gamers just wanting to be outraged again” is what gets this thread so heated and explodes while Telefrog is in meetings.
