Thanks for testing that! I didn’t think it was the case but that situation arises so infrequently that I really couldn’t say. I thought maybe I had downloaded a couple games from Steam on my laptop before heading out of town without internet connection one time, but there’s no way I could remember if I had fired any of them up first. It was probably a good 6-7 years ago.
The initial run on a Steamwork game requires an online check. Non-Steamworks games do NOT need an online check. That’s up to the developer or publisher.
I love how we’ve reached a point where “we’re not being bastards” is a selling point worth advertising. Which is not to detract from “Yay! Updated World of Goo for all!”

I know I own World of Goo from somewhere. Hell if I know where it is 11 years later now.
EDIT: Email search shows direct from developer, cool
Having playnite can really help keep track of that kind of stuff. I barely ever open steam anymore since I’ve installed it. Once they add support for a couple missing services like the Epic store it will be perfect.
They added a small section on DRM after I posted.
Epic may ultimately end up being able to present itself as a friendly alternative to Steam. It’s appealed to developers with lower pricing rates, and while players have complained about a lackluster interface, they can benefit from some of its structural decisions — like the fact that Epic gives developers leeway to pick their DRM options.
Even now, though, the Epic furor speaks to a real and long-running fear of losing control over how we play games, one that’s only become more relevant as physical media fades into the past.
Update 3:30PM ET: Added more detail about Epic’s DRM structure.
But yeah, NMI.

Yes but again, Steam does the same thing. It’s a poorly source article.
I wasn’t talking about you. Someone else literally made an analogy comparing Epic to an ex-wife.

I don’t know what you were trying to reference since the term lover and wife don’t seem to be in this topic outside of this conversation, but regardless of who said it… spurned lovers, angry ex-wives… unless someone is taking bats to windshields, selling expensive things for nothing… this isn’t even closer to that kind of emotional response. They’re not even at the same level. It’s extreme to even suggest they are.

Oh that. I think that’s the only time I’ve seen anything like that. It doesn’t have the word lover, or spurned or wife in it, so it’s like I could just fine it. You definitely aren’t speaking of one person though because you actually give a number, greater than one.
These conversations would go a lot easier if one group would stop trying to apply judgement and emotions to the other for the sole reason of dismissing. What exactly has happened here, what’s the horrible thing that is happening with Epic Games at this moment. They have some bad PR, which they are largely responsible, a whole bunch of gaming articles stroking their ego, trying to pretend to be impartial, and very small set of review bombing. There are very few doing anything irrational, or revenge driven, or even actionable.
There a number of objections to the approach, to believing anything they say and weighing that against a history of pulling out, and the repeat conversation would simply not happen if someone did’t show up after a few days with a sneer and yet again trying to misconstrue the discontent.
You realize that those exact same words could be applied to you as well? Especially with your dead horse comment.

Not really. That comment was in response to him saying the same four people. My comment would not exist with his. We’ve already gone round n round. You feel the need to do it again, or are you still trying to paint the community based on your position in a arugment?
Sure, sneer at me all you like. It’s not like you are a hypocrite or anything.
They’ve had EGS support for about a month or so.
People did maths using the recently released financial docs from Fig, figured out Epic paid around 3.3 million for Phoenix Point exclusivity.
I started up epic to get my free transistor game but when I click on it, the option to download it, or to checkout, never shows up.
Ugh.
Odd, I have only ever bought the games through the website. Just gone to the free game, and checked it out.
Yeah I tried but it isn’t working.
