With goodwill ambassadors like this, who needs detractors.

I’m glad we’ve moved on from dead horses. I’m just gonna agree to disagree. But that’s fine, let’s hope your dreams of saving PC gaming come true and that I’m mostly wrong, I’ll live with that scenario.

My contribution to this notable thread.

Epic get’s a huge amount of credit from me for Unreal and the Unreal Engine. Gaming period would not be what it is today without them. Whatever dick moves they have done now and in the past, they have done way more good for gaming than bad.

It seems that they are more pro-developer than Valve. Not only are they giving them a better cut, but again, Unreal Engine.

I think I’ve decided to be an Epic fanboi. Steam just sucks. I’ve got no use for 90% of the fluff on it. Trading cards? Please. Basic client functions (like browsing games and organizing game libraries) are sluggish and shamefully lacking in features given their 15 years of total dominance. Valve cashed in and sold out years ago.

I’m routing for Epic to annhilate them. If it causes them to shut their doors, and folks lose access to their 100s of games, then good. The whole online DRM gaming store concept was an abortion from the beginning and we all knew it. We drank the koolaid at the altar of convenience, and every dollar we threw their way was a testament to our own shameful complicity.

Let the God of Fortnight claim the prize of retribution and then close its own infernal gates, forcing us to rummage through the wreckage of old CD’s, action figures without guns, and model airplanes.

The online subjugation of PC gaming will burn with the overlords who have fattened themselves from its torment… Bwahahahaha.

My point exactly. Attacks and insults are all your sides seems to offer. And yet you guys play the victim. It’s like watching Fox News.

Epic definitely said and did those things nine years ago. Since then they changed their minds. Can we get past this, or must we continue discussing it ad nauseum?

You’re not paying attention then, but we already knew that.

I have no animus towards EGS but my god are it’s advocates insufferable right now.

One genre I could see Epic doing well in is fighting games.

Most games are running on UE4, and I believe Epic offers free crossplay tools, which the PC crowd would love. Seems like it would be a good match- though the issue would be getting ossified Japanese companies to switch from Steam to an unproven platform when it took them years to accept the PC folks would buy their games on Steam instead of pirating.

It’s such an outrageously good deal for them that I expect every game running UE to launch on the Epic Store. Not necessarily exclusive unless Epic kicks in some of that Fortnite lucre, but likely in addition to Steam.

Notice how you just turned around and insulted me just now? I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of being called insufferable. Guess what though, you have my attention, which, considering how little you think of me, must be very surprising.

But, @CraigM, how you are you doing? I’m sorry you disagree with my statement, but it really looks like you entire comment was just attacking me and insulting me. It’s sad that you took the time to just do that. Am I wrong? Did I missing something. I hope so, because you seem like a good egg.

In the end though, it kind of seems like my statement was pretty accurate, don’t you think? It would be nice to be proven wrong. Maybe you’ll get a chance next time.

Sincerely,

Legowarrior.

I miss Gamersgate.

To address the DRM chatter up-thread, the Epic Launcher automatically uninstalled Subnautica for me when I removed the client from my computer. It may not have an online component, but it’s still tied to the launcher. I could keep the game if I re-named its folder, but I think they may have patched that later (the game, being Unity, : ^) didn’t run well on my computer anyway.)

These days, I’m buying from GOG as much as possible, but I still prefer Steam for anything involving frequent updates or multiplayer, and I love cloud saves. Achievements are a secondary draw that Twitch and Epic are notably lacking; I find the statistics useful for both as a personal measuring stick and to see just how many people complete that challenge I just sweated over for several hours.

So maybe don’t be every other reply in this thread without providing anything new? That isn’t an attack, but it seems every time I check this thread its repeated replies from you but nothing new really being said.

It’s 3600 posts, there is nothing further to be said. Some people are pissed, some people really don’t get why it’s a big deal, and never shall the twain meet.

One thing I’m fully on board with is Epic supporting independent developers by giving them additional funding in exchange for being a store exclusive for a few months. I know of a couple of teams where they’ve received enough money to pay for nearly an extra year of development, which is keeping people employed and dramatically improving their projects.

Complains about insults while simultaneously insulting. Head explodes You’re right that there is a distinctively propagandistic tone to portions of the arguments in this thread.

As others have noted, nothing has been substantively added to this thread in a few thousand posts. I stick by my view that Steam provides more value to me, a customer, than EGS. I’m open to EGS convincing me, but actions speak louder than words.

I don’t feel you (and it is mostly you) are making many new arguments in favor of EGS. I’m not either against it - because there isn’t much new information, yet. So I’ll ignore the thread for a few months and see if there is any new merits on either side.

Ahh the internet.

Which would be great, but are developers getting the money or are their publishers? Even with Steam, I have bough countless games directly from small time developers who provided steam keys. Is Epic providing some new service for developers? Outside of exclusives, great, but are they actually providing something new for developers themselves?

In both of these cases the developers are getting the money as they’re self-publishing (unhelpfully I can’t say which ones I’m referring to yet as the deals haven’t been officially announced). With other larger games from independent studios, like 4A Games and Gearbox, I have serious doubts that the money makes it’s way to the developers.

Hopefully whoever it is doesn’t try and spin this as being in the consumer’s best interest, because I think that’s where a lot of the outrage comes from. If you want to take the money to make sure your employees get paid - fine, be honest about it and don’t act surprised when people are annoyed because their best interests as a customer don’t align with yours as a developer (especially if you’ve taken their money via corwdfunding…).

If it enables the teams to make better games, as they have more developers and time to support the project, then surely it is in the players interest as far as delivering the best product possible. Neither are a crowd funding situation, so I doubt there will be much backlash.

Yes, if someone acts like an asshole to me (such as idiotically accusing me of racism), I respond in kind. You taking my posts out of context doesn’t change that.
You can see I never labeled you as Steam Hater or anything like that. If you wanna talk, talk, if you wanna fight like on a playground, sure, we can do that too.
