Thanks. I was getting the impression from those “reviews” that a handful of people thought it was being taken offline or something, but I didn’t read anything of the sort.
You never know I guess but my impression has been that those who own it on steam will be able to continue playing it there. Epic just gets your money now when you buy keys. The only people who would have to get it on Epic are those who don’t own it and you have until the end of the year or so to buy it on steam.
Yea, being removed from Steam would only fuck over existing players who want to get their friends into the game unless Epic decides to support crossplay for the game. Sure, if they cared that much they could just buy a second copy on the Epic store, but then the assholes at Epic would get their money.
The game has an internal id system called Rocket ID that allows for crossplatform play between PC, Xbox, Playstation, etc. Therefore I don’t see why Epic users couldn’t play against steam users.
I could see Epic preventing crossplay with Steam in their mission to save PC gaming, but I will be happy to be proven wrong.
I wouldn’t say that, but I don’t see what medium to long term business case they could present to the board to keep the same level of support for costumers who they won’t profit from anymore.
That would be indefensible. I don’t think they’ll do that.
Rocket League will of course still be monetized, if you own a copy on steam. They sell a “rocket pass”, like the Fortnite battle pass, and also sell cosmetics.
I totally don’t see it. It’s a pc game, the same game, just sold on different stores.
I could see zero reason to cut off crossplay with Steam owners. That would just hurt other owners of the game, wouldn’t it? Just make any new DLC available on the “active” platforms.
BTW, World of Goo is free now on EGS, and their next free game is Untold Stories. I already have it, damnit.
Let’s all just handwave away that Fortnite is the game that brought the idea of cross platform play to everyone in the first place and made it into a fight for Sony. Surely they’ll do the opposite now.

Fortnite was big enough to get leverage with Sony, but crossplay goes back a lot further than Fortnite. In the previous generation it was Microsoft that was the stubborn party.
hahah! That Harden face is perfect!
The anti-Epic sentiment is so strong some want to conveniently “forget” or even alter reality.
Oh, I still think they will champion crossplatform everywhere else. There is a chance they will exclude Steam. I sincerely hope I’m wrong though. We shall see.
I mean, obviously there is a chance, because there is a chance for everything, but gives us a number, a representation on how evil Epic will be. Are we talking 10%, 30%, 60%, less then 1%?
How fearful of this are you? It’s not really fair to agree there is a chance at something without giving us an idea on how you weigh it all out.
I don’t have a hard percentage or weight in my mind, sorry. The move just wouldn’t surprise me based on Epic’s recent actions. If they feel no compunction about pulling games from sale, siloing off Steam players doesn’t seem that far of a stretch beyond that.
This isn’t a hill I want to die on, just a simple observation based on the all the recent events.
:-)
What recent events though lead you to such a dark and dismal outcome?
Outside of a few preorders become Epic Exclusives (shitty, true), nothing leads me to believe that they would remove cross platform multiplayer.
On the other hand, there is a chance that they will continue to provide free games. So, that’s cool.

There is precisely 0% chance that Epic walls off Steam in their own garden. Epic bought Psyonix because they want to make more money, not less. Subjugating current Steam players out of spite doesn’t help that cause.
I do, however, give it a 99.9% chance that they stop selling Rocket League on Steam for new customers at some point soon after the acquisition closes.

That’s what one would think about the timing, but the original statement said it was going to be on the Epic Store in “late 2019”. That seems crazy slow if they’re closing in May/June.

Yeah that is weird. Maybe Psyonix has a deal with Steam that ends later this year?
