No, I don’t think that’s a fair assessment or a good business strategy. Like Microsoft, the only way they’ll attract customers is by being open, especially with PC pretty much being Steam for most people.
I don’t expect them to silo off Steam users, but if your thought is that there’s no reason for anyone to even think Epic would consider it you haven’t been paying attention the past 6 months.

There is literally zero evidence to support any of this.
But ok, whatever.
I have been paying attention. I don’t think Epic would consider it. At least not seriously.
I’m getting rather annoyed by people throwing around some really vague statements as if they had some sort of validity.
“There is a chance” or “They probably considered it” are used to normalize incredible silly statements.
There is a chance that I might win the lottery. There is a chance that I’ll quit my job. I’ve considered it. These are all true statements that have no merit because although I’ve been tempted to quit my job and become a board game developer, especially if I win the lottery, I also know that I need a steady stream of income, and health insurance, and that board game development is tough.
Capitalism. I’d do it if it were more profitable.
Like, they were clearly not the first ones to ask for it, just the ones with enough money to push it through.
IIRC Valve tried to get X360/PC cross-play in for TF2 in the Orange Box more than a decade ago (of course, they would have desynced pretty damn quick given the subsequent movement to hat simulator on the PC). No one’s been able to push it successfully until recently.

Nobody has had the leverage of Fortnite until recently. It pays to be a winner.

Please explain how it would be more profitable for Epic to prevent new sales of Rocket League on EGS from playing with millions of people who own the game on Steam.
Epic offers a free or heavily discounted version of Rocket League on EGS using Steam APIs to validate ownership. Their analysts forecast that enough people will make the switch that the lost users will be offset by not having to pay Valve a 30% cut of all microtransactions.
Couldn’t they just eliminate steam from the microtransaction process all together by making it something internal to the game tied together with your rocket ID? So in order to buy keys, you have to have an Epic store login that is associated with your rocket ID. That way no matter what platform you are playing the game on all monies for microtransactions go to Epic.
No, Valve doesn’t allow that from my understanding. It’s a large part of what led to EA no longer selling their new games on Steam.
Their store becomes big enough that allows them to sell/give away a new FTP version to those who already have it and shut down the old servers. Like, I don’t know, EA did.
I don’t think Epic forcing out Steam users is any stretch. I also don’t think you have to go as far as saying Epic is evil. Just look to the TV streaming wars as a business model and it no longer seems such a stretch.
People throw around the term evil as if it has merit. I sometimes wonder if we are talking about a company, or some end boss in a D&D campaign.
Would that be a big deal? As someone who plays a ton of Rocket League I know I wouldn’t care if it went free to play (it basically already has) and has to be launched via Epic instead of Steam.
Yep, greed isn’t evil, it’s the natural state of companies, one that customers can’t follow without being entitled. Nevermind that it’s actual legal entitlement that enables the first behavior.
Well, my platform would be out, so yes, for one (not that I play multiplayer modes). For another, that’s not the same good that people were sold as there’s a lot more to it than the icon.
Of course, they could just do a re-skinned version 2 and likely no one is going to bother trying to get a refund.
So you are telling me that if you were an avid RL player, play every night, and then they decide to move it to the Epic store, nothing else about the game changes, it doesn’t cost you anything to start playing it on the Epic store, that you would refuse to do download it and play it? What, out of principle? You have a grudge against Epic so hard that you won’t play a game for free?

LOL, you are arguing with someone who is literally just pulling worst-case scenarios out of his ass and assuming that is what Epic is going to do.
I mean nobody can assure me that they won’t use my address to sneak into my house and kill my dog, either, so that’s the reason I have a problem with EGS.
It would cost me having to deal with an OS I don’t like so that I could deal with a store I don’t like and don’t trust with my credit card or personal information as their tiny history isn’t great.
It’s my principles, you don’t have to agree with them. I’m glad we’ve moved on into it being a possible future, at least.
That would both be illegal and a first for the industry. Closing servers supporting a game on a competing platform would be none of those things.
3000+ posts and they’re still trying to play the “but what’s wrong with Epic” game? Seriously? The level of disingenuous trolling is staggering at this point.
It’s one thing to look at the first post in this thread and say “I don’t care about that” and another thing entirely to pretend that it’s empty.
