Shit, this isn’t even unambiguously wrong, there’s plenty of people who would say it’s a perfectly natural thing to happen in a free market and I’d be free to not participate as a rational actor. It’s like saying we can’t believe in different values.
Did you miss all the imaginary nightmare scenarios being invented about how evil Epic is? A lot of this thread is just slashfic about fanciful ways Epic might fuck you now.
Yeah, I don’t think we are reading the same thread. Unless you honestly think that Epic will shut down all it’s server and refuse to allow, “cross platform” gaming between Steam and Epic (although, considering that Steam and Epic are on the same platform, I think that might be the stupidest use of the term that I’ve seen in a while).
In any event, industry history has shown that the first move of the smaller community is to be as open as possible to the bigger community. You see this with X-Box vs Playstation. In this case, Epic, as the smaller community, would do everything possible to allow for multiplayer with it’s larger competitor (Steam) in order to minimize the harm of moving to the smaller platform (Epic).
And I truly believe that despite Epic’s best efforts, will remain the smaller of the two platforms. That isn’t to say that it won’t be competitive or viable, but it just won’t have the same pull that steam has.

I’m still shocked you’re trying to play the “Epic is evil” game :)
Epic just tweeted they plan to drive large vans around town to run over your dog, then dispatch a hit squad to murder your first born. This is happening guys!

Exactly what I expected from a company that has dared to create a new storefront to compete with Steam!
Considering I can’t just download and use a client from one of them, it might not.
No one is claiming this could happen next month. Hell, they’re not going to do anything unmistakably wrong if they can keep pushing the waters on twitter and back-paddle when the reaction is stronger than expected. But you can read the language and know what they want, again, there’s nothing unique about it.
What on Earth does that have to do with anything? I’m talking about pizzaddict pretending the entire thread up to this point doesn’t contain a single complaint about Epic (and also ignoring the entire first post, of course):
I don’t care about Epic either way, good or bad, I have no opinion and I haven’t bought a game on their store. I was asking I guess just to understand how deep the hatred for Epic runs in some people here I guess. I mean I really don’t like Sony, I’ve had some issues with electronics from them and awful customer service experiences and I’ve never been a Playstation guy. With that said, if we swapped out Sony for Epic and I had to go there to play my favorite game, for free, then I would probably do it. I’m not giving them money, I’m not giving them personal information, I’m just launching a free game. I’m not necessarily saying Perky_Goth is wrong for making that stand, I was just trying to understand how deep the hatred was. Now I know.
Now I’m going to go play more Rocket League :)
I often wonder when defending corporate entities became more normalized and accepted than criticizing them in our society.
In my opinion any massively rich corporate entity with their hand out asking for money is open to critical inquiry, Epic and Valve included.
Kind of a sad state of affairs when scrutinizing a massive business interest is seen as problematic.
It wasn’t even that long ago that we had this issue on PC. I’m not saying this is Epic’s plan, but there is precedent.

And it was a catastrophic failure. So obviously Epic would copy the strategy with Rocket League.

Only they can’t really compete with Steam. So they’ve decided to bribe developers into not using Steam instead.
Easy answer: because folks think Epic’s inclusion into the PC market is going to lead to higher prices and more headaches for PC gamers.
I am on Vin’s side mostly… I am a little concerned that that undercuts his position… so what is this argument about again?
It probably happened around the time acting like minor inconveniences are war crimes became the standard form of discourse.
Okay, I have to ask, what is stopping you from downloading both clients?
I know what is stopping me from owning a PC, an X Box One, a PlayStation 3, and 4, and all the different versions of Nintendo Products out there. It’s money. Owning all those platforms comes at a real dollar cost.
But that isn’t a huddle to getting the Epic app and the steam app. I can have both, and they live beside my Origin app on my PC.
Uh… both clients are used by dozens of million of people without problem.

Epic doesn’t have a Linux client, Steam does.
…and so far, that has been the actual, factual reality. Prices have gone up, quality of service has gone down.
But hey, maybe in a year or two we will be at status quo from before Epic coming to scene.
