The reviews were real strong for Ashen when it released on EGS, and many praised the aesthetic. The publisher is Annapurna, so while that makes it an unusual genre to put out into the indie space, I don’t think as a player I’m surprised when the visuals are unconventional.
I completely understand the above, as it echoes my initial sentiments. Know that some reviews consider Ashen to be beautiful! PCGamer calls it “…thoughtful, gorgeous, challenging and a dream to explore.” Emphasis mine, but if you’re ignoring Ashen due to the visuals, it might be worth reconsidering (beauty in the eye of the beholder, etc.)
I would expect the difficulty to be a larger hurdle than the aesthetic, but to each their own.

Cheers! Our taste are similar so I suspect I may feel the same.
@Nightgaunt
Good points. Now you mention it it does feel indie like but is from the well funded Annapurna. With that kind of funding and price point making a polarizing art choice seems like an unnecessary risk to me. But maybe I am off base.
@Lunarstorm
Cheers! Yeah that is a good review! Agree in the eye of the beholder. I wouldnt want to miss a gem because of it.
At least the update to fix the game was free.
Ashen was a terrible game for me. Far, far too hard. I never played Dark Souls either, though, so I didn’t know what I was getting into.

Starting December 19th, 12 days of free games, to coincide with their Holiday Sale.

That’s a pretty sweet deal!
Does anyone know if you can claim these free games even if you’re away from your PC? I’ll be out of town between Christmas and New Year’s Day so I’ll just have my phone/ipad.
You can purchase and obtain free titles at www.epicgames.com via your phone’s mobile browser (assuming you have internet access.)

Cool! Thanks for the tip.
Wolf Among Us and The Escapist are currently free on the store.

Can I purchase and obtain free titles using my PC’s browser? I ask because I’m unable to install the Epic Launcher. It stalls at “installing Direct X.” Very frustrating.

Yep, I use Chrome all the time to grab the free deals.
Sure! Once you’ve signed into your Epic account in your web browser, you can add games (free or purchase) as you please. If repeat attempts to install the Epic launcher fail, Epic’s support should be able to assist if you reach out to them. Please send me a PM if problems persist.
Edit: I completely missed Rob’s post until after I replied. Oops.

Thanks. I hadn’t noticed the “store” link on the left side of the Epic Games website. I used it and got the two current free offerings.
As for installing the launcher, I think it’s a problem with my 9-1/2 year old Windows 7 PC. I’ve updated the videocard but nothing else, and in the meantime my installation of Windows has slowly degraded. I have trouble running Windows update or downloading new antivirus definitions or updating my GeForce drivers. Gotta stop procrastinating and build a new PC.

Is the shopping cart among them?
Who needs a shopping cart for free games?
The two points that are coming soon are the same they had already as ‘coming soon’ in the past month blog entry. So not a lot of advance.

I really like that Epic games is going directly up against the steam sale. And kudos on the $10 coupons: if you have money to spend, this is the best way to get loyal customers – not through exclusives.
It’s difficult for me to tell with 100% accuracy, but I believe it’s a good deal to purchase the Surviving Mars season pass with the $10 coupon. With coupon it’s around $13, and the season pass includes Green Planet and other stuff. Green Planet is around $13 by itself so anything you get besides that is gravy!
