I’m sorry I missed that match. It’s unbelievable how annoying the Spanish team was with that style of football for so many years.
Yep - first time since the Euro finals in 2008.
Also, there is only one nation in the world that has ever completed more than 1000 passes in a competitive match, and that is Spain. And they’ve done so 4 times…
Spain’s matches tend to be boring. The way they played yesterday was promising though, and their young players (Lamal and Williams) shine far more if they get direct balls that they can run and challenge with. A more direct playstyle also suits Morata a lot better than the classic Tiki-Taka, so hopefully they stick to it.
Fantastic first half of football in the Poland Netherlands game, really good stuff
Weghorst!!
Cracking game of football, very little in the way of rolling around buying freek kicks and some excellent skills on display
Great goal for Denmark, so quick off the throw-in and just a delight to see Eriksen score.
Remembering the first Danish game of the last Euros, that is a journey.
1,100 days after that frightening scene. Wow.
England to beat Serbia 2 -0.
I was just about to say the Danes are damn lucky there’s a pole on the team, and then that happened.
Denmark in trouble. They want 3 points before facing England.
Disappointing match seen with Danish eyes. Team having trouble playing more than 60 minutes of good football these days.
Lovely to see Eriksen back and enjoying himself (official MoM today).
Denmark will lose to England, and will need to beat Serbia in the final match to advance. 50-50 match, I think.
Fine finish by Bellingham for sure…but that Kyle Walker pass to Saka to set it up was lovely work as well.
Saka has their fill back on toast, not sure their full back fancies it much…
Classic England performance. Start brightly and take an early lead and then go into sleep mode and give the initiative away.
Southgate’s half time team talk needs to just be him tapping a sign that says “wake the fuck up.”
I’d be interested to see what Kane’s touch map looked like in that first half.
England has a fantastic attacking frontline and with a bit of luck (and magic from Bellingham, Saka, et al) that will take them a long way. But I doubt this is the year it will be coming home.
Southgate is a great man manager, and he deserves credit for getting England to perform as a team and the good results over the past few years. But (IMO) tactically he is not at he same level as the other top managers, and his game management rarely improves things. Watching this match, it’s really hard to see what Englands gameplan is beyond waiting for some genius from Bellingham and Saka. And the experiment with Alexander-Arnold isn’t working at all, IMO.
If Southgate brings on a defensive midfielder and Englands spends the last 45 minutes doing panicky clearances, I’m going to scream.
I think Kane touched it once.
That’s the way it goes sometimes though: he was generally in good positions for Saka’s crosses but the ball didn’t come his way. And he’s clearly been told not to drop too deep, so he doesn’t get the ball that way either.
Opta just said it was two touches!
I must have missed one.
So, Serbia has literally scored in 22 consecutive matches prior to this one. If England thinks that this is a match where they can just play home a 1-0 result, they might have to think again.
Allowing Serbia to play the ball and gain confidence is a really bad idea.
Gareth needed to tap the sign harder.
Kane’s touch count just doubled!
England have lost control of the game and still only have a one goal lead. If only there was something Gareth could do… some way he could change the lineup of players on the field. Maybe introduce a fresh problem for Serbia to think about. But, alas.
No defensive substitution yet, but I feel like that scream (or just a huge yawn) is warranted.
Alas indeed. But don’t worry, he can still put on a defensive midfielder or an extra defender.
