Euro Truck Simulator 2: Slow Ride

I made it once! Once.

Heh, my mother shot me once Johnny…

I’ve not even tried manual parking yet. Too scary. ;-)

There’s some good videos online demonstrating the proper technique. Some awkwardly shaped parking lots aside, it’s really not that bad once you work out the basic principles.

My simple technique is to use the outside overhead camera and just work the truck around so I can reverse STRAIGHT backwards into the spot. Even if I’m pretty far away from the parking spot, it’s still easier for me to just slowly reverse straight backwards and adjust for problems as I go rather than doing any kind of angling. I have to stop pretty frequently to shift into forwards so I can straighten out and start reversing again. And I have to keep a sharp eye on my front wheels as I turn the steering wheel.

YAY SIMULATED PARKING!

Hah, I’m nowhere near ready to drive in another view mode yet. I switched from keyboard to a mouse, then to a joystick, and was all over the road, back to cockpit view/keyboard for me. Eventually I’ll try the overhead view. ;)

I’m playing with a gamepad… had to adjust the custom settings so it was a more traditional driving scheme. Right trigger gas, left trigger brake, left stick steering, right stick freelook. Everything is very customizable which is nice. And I love how when you push your view to the right, you look out the window and behind you. I can practically feel the sunburn on my right arm.

Took me a while to figure out how to turn on my wipers when it started raining. :)

The road lulls me into such a trance that I kept getting dinged by speed traps. And those fines are steep when you’re just starting out, trying to bank some euros. Is there a way to see the speed limit besides road signs?

Such a hilariously enjoyable “game”.

Which gamepad? A 360?

Yep!5

I should really get me one of thems.

That’s how I felt too as a holdout for about 4 years… finally got one and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long. Especially now that so many former “PC” games/genres are being designed for the gamepad first and foremost. (Skyrim, XCOM, etc, etc…)

IT IS TIME, BRIAN! Easiest $30 you’ll spend all year.

You might be right. I was trying to drive with my joystick and throttle and I was all over the road…

Oke, bit of boasting: I actually nailed the parking :-). I think the key is to get your starting position right, so you don’t have to make big turns where you lose all sence of direction because the cabin is in such a big angle to the trailer that you can’'t use your mirrors properly. If you get that starting position right, the rest is a matter of small steering adjustments, usually in the exact opposit direction of what you would think is right.

It takes some practising, but if it works, it’s awesome! ‘end boasting’

Not so awesome is my occasional complete inabillity to get the truck moving without stalling the engine… Quite annoying to see that trafficlight turn green and red again while I’m still in the same spot after stalling like 6 times… :-(

Btw: bought it to now. Had so much fun with the demo I figured they earned it…

This thread needs more truck porn. Where are the pics of all your pimped out rides?

Question for those of you that listen to the onboard radio: I tried that, but I found I couldn’t hear the engine then, which I find annoying. Is there any way to increase engine noice and lower music volume, so you can hear both?

I endorse this. Getting a good initial starting position does 90% of the work. And yes, you basically have to steer the opposite of what your instinct tells you. To straighten up the truck (when reversing), steer into the concave side of the “V” formed by your cabin and trailer.

Ya’all are still making me want to buy this, but I still see myself driving around and crashing into things on purpose… just like Grand Theft Auto games, I rarely play the storyline…

Be aware that crashing into things may not give you the satisfaction you’re looking for, if you’re using GTA games as reference. There aren’t any sparks, visible vehicle damage, or explosions. You just get the goofball physics, and then some monetary penalty is assesed at the end of the drive.

Plus damage to your truck, which can affect its performance and cost you money to fix.

It looks like they might be bringing the series to the US:

I think they already confirmed the next title is American Truck Simulator (or some similar title)
