Yep, I myself anticipate taking it back up and rage-quitting it at least two or three more times!
New update. Still no fix for invert Y lol.
I fired up Dead Island 2 briefly yesterday. It has the same issue, where playing with the Y-axis inverted means the radial menus invert the Y-axis as well. I believe it’s been out for at least a year on Epic, so I’m guessing no one who matters has complained. Seems like us inverted Y-axis fogies have aged out of console UIs.
Yeah, I guess so :P Maybe I should go through the effort to retrain myself. I don’t think it would take that long, but then what would happen when I play flight simulators?
Have you filed a bug report yourself, Tom? Surely a well-known game reviewer can make a difference!
Neat! But still no inverted Y fix afaict.
So I dived into this game again in spite of the invert Y issue and I’m not convinced yet that it’s a good game. I kind of like the puzzle of figuring out how to get there from here, but there are few issues:
- Logistics just aren’t a thing. You can’t stage vehicles or a trailer cache for a long run. And for the most part, there aren’t multi-part supply chains to figure out. Like you don’t deliver steel to a site in order to build a logging camp so you can process logs and deliver them to a shop that makes cabins that you can deliver to a ski resort, like you do in Snowrunner. Each mission here is pretty self-contained, though there are instances where you have to complete a mission in order to unlock an outpost or passage to another map.
- Failure sucks. In Snowrunner, if I run out of gas with a trailer full of stuff I can send a truck with a gas tank trailer out to fuel back up. But in Expeditions, if I run out of gas, I just fail and have to start over. And there’s not an easy way to tell how much you’ll need for a particular mission until you try it once. The distances on the mission briefings seem random. I just attempted the mission to unlock the Sonoran map in Arizona and it’s waaayyyy longer than the mission briefing suggests.
- Obtuse mechanics. This was somewhat true of Snowrunner as well, but it’s frustrating to not understand how the developers intend you to play the game. You can, for instance, buy a Cargo Drone module for one of your outposts and it will deliver gas/supplies/equipment to anywhere on the map. That’s a huge deal and is not obvious. It’s not even obvious how to get that to work. (Make sure your active truck is the delivery destination, go to the map screen, category on the far right, down to Modules, open the cargo drone, choose the material you want delivered from the other modules in your base. If you deliver too often, the drone will run out of gas (is there a way to view gas remaining? I don’t know), but you can refuel it from a truck if you have one at the drone’s outpost.) If you want to bring a second truck to another map, you have to tow it, i.e. the only way to switch maps is to drive from one to the other.
And nice as the Arizona maps are, they’re a little monotonous. (Images below have UI elements because the photo mode is janky.) Maybe I should take a break from them and try the Carpathians. Or maybe I should go back to Snowrunner.
Thanks for the update! Would you happen to have tried any of these games on a Steam Deck and have an opinion about them running on one?
That’s a great question! I have Expeditions on Playstation 5, so can’t comment on that. I did try Snowrunners on Steamdeck way back when I first got the deck and it ran fine. It’s not as pretty on the Deck, but runs and controls well.
According to the Game Pass app on my phone, this is available to download from Game Pass now.
Yeah, and the season 1 DLC should be out today today, which supposedly has a cave biome to explore. I can’t find any patch or release notes for the update though.
It’s on free weekend on Steam now, so I might give it a shot. It is also on sale 30% off - but that’s not really a great discount in Steam terms at least, for a year-old game with mixed reviews.
There are supposedly patch notes here, but when I try to view them I can see them for 0.5 seconds and then the screen turns grey:
LOL, maybe you’re supposed to screen capture to grab them if you really cared about the patch notes!
Edit: My gray screen went away after a bit.
Heh, the patch notes need a patch.
So is this any better now? Would love to add this to my current driving game lineup, but haven’t heard much good about it.
