F.E.A.R. single player demo (maybe)

On the Gamespot homepage, tucked in a small corner on the righta little below the box about the special features is a countdown timer for the F.E.A.R. demo. Here’s a screenshot:

I wonder if this is a single-player demo, and I wonder why they haven’t advertised for it extensively like they did with the BF2 demo. The release date is mid-October anyway so I think it would be a bit early for an SP demo? Or maybe not. Clicking on it takes you to the game’s Gamespot gamespace, where there is no info on it. Their latest info is about a single player demo hands-on, so we might actually get a single-player demo in 2 days. Hopefully anyway.

They did an MP demo already didn’t they? I have no interest in FEAR as an MP game so, yeah, I hope this is the SP demo…

The MP stuff wasn’t really a demo. They had a multiplayer beta on FilePlanet for a while, and last month they had an MP beta on Gamespot’s new GameCenter thing, but I think that was for GS Complete members only. Didn’t try it because I’m not interested in the MP either.

The F.E.A.R. single player demo is due to be released on F.E.A.R. Friday. That’s the 5th of August in non-marketing speak.

Has anyone been a part of the more recent MP Beta test’s? I got on the original MP test, via Gamespy, and while it had some interesting bits…well, it had bullet time, it was straightforward running around an office/warehouse shooting standard FPS weapons. Engine was chugging on high end gear as well.

How’s the engine running on more recent builds?

So 4 and a half hours till the demo is released. No-one frothing at the mouth?

BTW, could the folks playing it tell what specs they’ve got and the corresponding graphical settings? And maybe an estimate of how well it runs? The MP beta ran like a dog on even the higher-end rigs out there.

Well, according to the official site, the demo isn’t due to be released until 10AM EST. So over 12 hours. Given the performance of the MP Beta test, I think I’m safe from frothing. No doubt I’ll give it a spin tomorrow at some point. I’d be happy to post performance impressions once I get a chance.

That’s weird. There’s a countdown timer on Gamespot that says the demo will go live in 4 hours.

The MP beta ran quite well on my rig. I have an X800Pro and a 2.8 P4 w/2 gigs RAM.

The demo is out in all the major outlets now folks. It was out 15 minutes ago (10 am PST). It’s a whopping 650 MB, but of course that’s not really shocking with the Dungeon Siege 2 demo at 1.5 GB.

I think we have reached the days where we say “wow, it is only 650megs! That is tiny” for demos

Breakup advice forums

Heh I give up. Fileshack has a 20 minute wait and another server with a 40 minute wait, Fileplanet has a minimum of 50 minutes wait on their servers, 3D Gamers and Gamespot servers are really slow. Ah well, tomorrow then.

BitTorrent should come to the rescue and save us all!

Anyone got a torrent they can spare?

Heh. And that right here, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason why dedicated download sites like GameSpot/3DGamers/FilePlanet/etc. will never be displaced by bittorrents. :)

3dgamers torrent might be fast. I’m using the one from file rush and its not that fast at the moment… 30 KB/s

Gamesdomain has it with no waits.

Downloading now…

Man, I’ve been looking forward to this demo for awhile. The game really does look spectacular.

Take note… the demo is really really short - and you will want a computer made after 2004 to play it decently.

I was able to run 1152 x 864 with 2X FSAA pretty well, after turning off shadows. AMD 2800+, 9800 Pro, 1gb RAM. Anything higher even without AA was fairly pokey and odd, especially in SloMo.

Didn’t get too far fiddling with it but it seems pretty good, in a Half-Life of the Dead sort of way.

Good demo – not incredible, but good. The ending is a cliffhanger, and definitely abrupt, but it serves its purpose. I didn’t find it terribly “scary,” honestly, so i think tense would be a better word for it. The AI is amazing. Enemies really use their surroundings well… they’ll crouch behind objects and wait you out, hide when they see you coming, and throw grenades at the right moments. There were only a couple times when the AI really hiccuped. Well, i’ll buy it. As FPS games go, it’s worth playing.
