Because it wasn’t Trump paying her directly… that actually wouldn’t have been a crime, if I understand, since Trump’s allowed to use as much of his own money as he wants to do anything in service of his campaign.

I thought that Cohen’s thing was a campaign finance violation because he paid his own money, rather than Trump doing it. And then Trump denied knowing anything about it.

Is he going to say, “I actually did know about it, and did this so it was actually me just paying my own money, through Cohen, so it’s not actually a violation at all!” Of course Cohen already is going to jail for the violation.

The FBI agent in the search warrant alleges not only did he know about it, but (there is reason to believe) he directed it. I don’t know campaign finance law, but I would assume that directing a violation of campaign finance law is also a violation of campaign finance law.

The Trump Org repaid Cohen, and disguised the payments as payments for other services by mutual agreement. Pretty sure that’s a felony, too, and implicates Trump.

Yes, it is a violation of campaign finance law to knowingly accept an illegal contribution, or to conceal contributions by failing to report them.
