People stayed home in 2016 because they assumed someone ELSE would vote and make sure Trump lost.

Can’t seriously say that I’m surprised; honestly, I feel like this has been clear for a long time that this is what Trump desires. And if Trump should somehow be re-elected, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become a reality, because 4 more years would lead to every branch of the executive packed with Trump flunkeys.
I had expected that they would try to position Ivanka for 2024 first, though, considering that she appears to both the favorite child and the smartes + it would allow the GOP to play the “why are you so mean to women, you’re the real misogynist” card anytime she gets criticized. But maybe she sees which way the wind is blowing, and is preparing her exit strategy. Alternatively, the misogyny is just so ingrained in the GOP electorate that they feel Don Jr has the better chance.
This is what it’s always about.
Many republicans wanted the govenment to be run like a business, with an imagined god-like CEO unencumbered by checks and balances. They imagined the CEO of a fortune 500 company deftly wheeling and dealing to get us ahead in the world. Instead we got a petulant child who can’t even run his lemonaid stand.
VP Scott Baio in 2020 is looking more and more real.

I think for Pence, the objection was likely one based on him just not being as absurdly idiotic as Trump.
Pence is smart enough to know that having the Taliban meet with the US President, on the anniversary of 9/11, is bad freaking optics.

The Taliban meeting with the President of the US, no matter who he is, is a bad idea at any time. This is a deal you let your negotiators and ambassadors make. Hell, let Jared take credit.

The biggest tragedy about this whole thing is you know that as part of his temper tantrum, the toddler in chief is going to order stupid attacks without any regard to the needs of the battlefield commanders.
Almost certainly resulting in unnecessary Afghan/US soldier and civilians deaths.
