Situations like this may be why he’s such a lickspittle. You can’t sway Trump with facts, he doesn’t care about the good of the country, and the only traits he values are loyalty and obsequiousness. So maybe Lindsey’s transformation into Reek is just him going all-in for Trump in order to have some small bit influence for the two things Graham really cares about. Those would be 1) his own re-election and 2) the mid-east.

So Trump tells Turkey he’s pulling out all the US forces, leaving the SDF vulnerable and basically forcing them to start a massive build-up to defend themselves, and thus essentially cease all efforts against ISIS.

Then, to fix the problem of the SDF being vulnerable, he threatens Turkey. Does he think that his “great and unmatched wisdom” will reassure the SDF? (Narrator: no he doesn’t) Does anyone in his base who actually still has a functioning brain/spine believe that reassurance is sufficient?

While I suspect that’s the political calculus both he and several other politicians used, Graham also divested himself of his appointed responsibilities to his constituents and the public at large. What you provided is an adequate explanation of his tactics, but these tactics were only employed due to the failure of any basic morality and ethics to take hold. For that, there’s no defense imho.
