I think the answer is that we are now allied with the Syrian government, and we weren’t before. At least, that’s how it seems.

Not really. The point is to keep it flowing, the US doesn’t really care who owns it, we have plenty of money to pay. Now, this was pre-Trump. Maybe he will make a power play for a few oil fields but I doubt it.

Trump has always been about seizing oil fields.

Like ever since Gulf War I iirc, but certainly by the second one. He thinks it’s the “smart” move.
It’s the only way foreign relations make sense to him. “What do we get out of it?”
Not soft power, not influence, what physical thing do we get? For him it’s oil because that is all there is in the Middle East.
