Corruption battler DJT may need to send his attack dog Rudy out to investigate this.

I don’t think anyone here would suggest foreign policy was his strong suit. So, I’m not intending to defend him when I ask you: who the last president was who was remotely decent in this regard?

Kennedy?

Every time you think we’ve hit bottom, there a few sub cellars still to bust through.

Sounds like she’s been drinking again.

It is hard to be equipped to handle his level of “genius”

Again? Or still?

Yeah, which is more than a little responsible for “the booming economy [for some]” that this Administration keeps crowing about.

Damn dude. I don’t like Mattis at all, but blaming him for Theranos is kinda nutty. As far any investigation can tell, Elizabeth Holmes and Ramesh Balwani are the real crooks. Everyone else, including just about the whole board and every other c-level, got suckered by the Holmes cult of personality and the idea that they were on the ground floor of the medical world’s Apple.

There were a ton of really smart people that went to bat for the company and Holmes. Were they all evil?

Why not? Being really smart in no way makes you good, after all. And being so greedy you ignore all warning sighs is indeed a classic form of evil. See also: Epstein’s supporters - Nobel prize winners! Great minds! Well-respected men in their fields!

And, also, evil shits.

Ah. So none of the engineers and med tech specialists responsible for the actual device knew it didn’t work? Because that’s…unbelievable and nutty.

From what I’ve read, they all knew it didn’t work, and they all knew Holmes was making promises they couldn’t keep. So now, either they told people (and it was Mattis’s job to fucking know) or they didn’t tell people (and they are evil). Take your pick.

Beyond that: Why did Mattis try to fast track it over the concerns of the DOD, and why did he go from that exercise to a board position worth hundreds of thousands?

I did have a quick search on qt3 to see if theres a thread, but is there a summary of Theranos tech anywhere? Google seem to indicate that whilst some said there never was a working version ever others hinted that it wasnt a complete fraud/mechanical Turk but just unreliable and unable to do all the tests they said it would. Sort of like a modern AAA game release. Shove it out the door patch later and then admit the multiplayer will be 6 player locally hosted games not the 128 player servers originally touted.

I’ll look, but I don’t think that’s the right take. They all knew that the idea they were pursuing was something no one thought could work (thus revolutionary and therefore profitable) but they all also knew that instead of developing it, they were cheating their proof of concepts by using conventional tests to produce the results. They couldn’t do it, and they knew it.

There was a point where Theranos was the bogeyman of the far right, because their CEO was the darling of Obama’s administration, and one of his “embassadors of entrepreneurship” or some crap.

It’s just a woman who conned a lot of people.

No rational person thinks that Mattis was cashing in on fraud. That’s nutjob conspiracy theorist trash.

He is a saint, our Mattie.

and only two people charged, and one dead biochemist of course. It’s odd because when you read google links/socmedia without knowing too much it really sounds like Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos was a 2 person company run out of a hired office. Its all hysteria about Holmes and her reality distortion bubble.

It’s like they gathered their much vaunted Medical Advisory Board and Directors, took a drop of blood, handed it to Holmes, who said “I’m just going into the room next door with the machine” and then walks out and then you hear feet running down stairs, the door slamming and a car speed off out the drive as she zooms down to the nearest blood lab, 4 hours later she returns and announces the results.

No, they had a couple hundred employees at least. I recall reading an account from the standpoint of the staff, how they were being told to do things like take blood samples to another lab to have them analyzed so that Theranos could claim their device had done the work.

Edit: Board member George Schultz’s grandson worked for the company and knew they were cheating and supposedly tried to blow the whistle. Who believes he didn’t tell grandpa?

It sounds like your argument is that either Mattis is a wrongdoer or someone else is a wrongdoer. Therefore Mattis is a wrongdoer.

I highly recommend reading Bad Blood. It’s fascinating stuff.

There was a lot of drama around that. Tyler (?) Schultz voiced his concerns to his grandpa, who invited him home to discuss it and then sicced some Theranos lawyers on him. Schultz claimed later that he didn’t realize the lawyers were going to ambush his grandson in the way that they did. But Schultz insisted for a very long time that Tyler was wrong and that Elizabeth Holmes was the real deal. He eventually came around, I think.

I think a lot of these highfalutin board types did lousy due diligence, but they were also selected for being political prestige movers/shakers rather than experts in engineering or medicine. I think a lot of wool was pulled over a lot of eyes, and there were also copious amounts of FOMO and greed.

There’s also a good podcast about it – https://abcaudio.com/podcasts/the-dropout/

Or one can just wait for the J-Law movie, I suppose.
