I voted for him last time around and would have voted for him again if I hadn’t moved back to the West Coast.
The major knock against his liberal cred is that he signed a bill banning abortions after a heartbeat can be detected. I’ve heard this is likely the abortion case that will make it all the way to SCOTUS. However, he ran as a pro-life and Catholic candidate, and represents a very Catholic state. As much as his signing the bill was a disappointment, it wasn’t a surprise.
(As an aside, I was talking politics with some conservative friends on my last visit, and they were angry that Edwards didn’t toe the Democrat line and veto the abortion bill. Partisan politics has gotten weird.)
Against that, he issued an executive order protecting LGBTQ+ people from workplace discrimination, rescinded a precious EO protecting businesses that discriminated against same-sex marriage, and authorized the Medicaid Expansion in Louisiana. His office has also been very active in helping Louisianans get access to state and federal aid after their annual hurricanes. That’s a big deal.
I can’t claim he’s a model Democrat after the abortion bill, but I’m sure as hell not willing to exclude him from the party.
ETA: party politics aside, he has been a much better governor for the state than Jindal was or Vittner would have been. That has to count for something.

You guys ever wonder what is the 1 thing Trump would have to do to make his base turn on him? I think as long as he has his base of assholes, the GOP is totally beholden to him.
Clearly its not about the wall, because there’s no wall and they still love him. If he came out in favor of gun control? He’s made comments about it in the past. Pro abortion? Dude has paid for his mistresses to get abortions. Shit half the GOP has done this.
Is it just because he’s an asshole and a bully? I really think that’s all there is to it. Scores of angry, disaffected, intellectually lazy, unhappy and unfulfilled people latching on to an alpha male asshole who is blowing up the world. I’m unhappy, so fuck you, you should be unhappy too. So really there’s nothing Trump can do that will lose his base, so long as he continues to be a role model for assholes.

Pretty much. He “sticks it to the libs” and that’s all that matters to his base. As long as they think he’s hurting the people they believe need hurting they will stand behind him. Improving their own lives is irrelevant, hurting those deemed undeserving is everything.
I think this is a very big part of it. A good many among those on the right have always loved asshole bullies.
